I was wondering if anyone here has tried to get Windows XP beta and had problems?<br />I ordered it back in the middle of August (15th or 16th) and a month later and a few emails to customer support...nothing.

I hope that it won't be this difficult when the retail version comes out. I'd hate to load my computer just to have to wait on Microsoft to get back to me.

Awesome.... arf arf. Lol. Well what about having a glance at OS X, Corn? Ok, I admit I'm not kind, it's true XP should rock, although it's a beta. But honestly, I really wonder how many will buy it, since it's supposed to be protected agaisnt piracy...

Btw, sad to see that this forum is not quite active. Haven't been here for a while and it's still the same.

And PH, are you still running Hotline server? I'm starting to work in Paris in october so I'll have a DSL connection. Sounds good eh? <img src="icon12.gif" border="0"> Hope you have freed the 5gig data that were "accidentally" uploaded on your PC <img src="icon12.gif" border="0"> <img src="biggrin.gif" border="0">

I was warning you not to send me that stuff man! <img src="smile.gif" border="0"> <br />I arcived it all using WinACE and 11 CD-RWs! One .ace went bad, actually .c07 and I am missing stuff. I will have to see what exactly I can save.

I have mixed feelings about WinXP. I'm dying for a OS with the 'easyness' of Win98 and the stability of Win2k!

But there are two things that give me the creeps:
1: The fact that I can't potter with my computer.
2: The fact that I will send information of my computer to Microsoft.

Anyway, I'll know for sure I won't buy it: too expensive. That's what makes point 2 even more important. ;)

In response:
1) You can still modify your computer according to a report in MaximumPC, October 2001 edition, page 45 and 47.
A small excerpt:
For now, the main thing upgraders need to know about Product Activation is that the Hadware ID number is primarily derived from your network card's hardware address, so if you don't frequently change you NIC, your problems should be minimal. The Product Activation wizard also looks at the hardware identifier strings of several other pieces of hardware in your system, including your video card, harddrive, and IDE controller. ... Your CPU serial number and memory size are also factored into the generation of your Hardware ID number.
According to Microsoft you should be able to upgrade 6 of your monitored pieces of hardware if you keep the same nework card, or four pieces of hardware if you change your network card at the same time. Also, after 120 days, you can do a complete motherboard-level upgrade of your rig.

Paraprased....somewhat.
2) Microsoft says that they cannot determine your hardware by the number generated by XP. Get the mag for the rest of the info or goto www.licenturion.com/xp/ for more info.

MaximumPC is still a great mag, even if they have lost some of their edginess.

The only above ground use of Nukes I favor is on those terrorist bastards down the road from me at Microsoft. Death to Microsoft. A horrible, bankrupt death. Such manifest evil is unfit to befoul the earth. But I don't want to state my real OPINION about this matter, so I'll remain neutral... until I get a hold of the Red Button. ;)

Don't Dis XP without getting a users opinion first.

Things I like about Windows XP Professional:
1) Requires no activation (I got the Corporate Gold Edition. :D But that wouldn't factor into your reasons.)
2) The interface is awesome!!
3) Multiple/Simultaionus user logins. That means that I can log into my account and play a game and when my mother wants to check her e-mail she can switch accounts and my stuff is still running. EVEN THE INTERNET CONNECTION. Then once she's done she can log off and I can continue the game! The say not to try it below 128 MB RAM but I have 512MB....and it's pure genious!!
4) Stability. This thing is a ****ing rock!!! It has froze on me once that caused me to have to reboot manually...and that was because of the HORRIBLY buggy game...Starfleet Command 2. It froze and when I tried to reactivate it in Windows Task Manager it came back up....but locked out the keyboard (Another thing it LOVES to do. OOB the users couldn't even type in the reg code!!! It had locked the keyboard.) For comparison, Win2k crashed about 5-7 times a day. And Win98 about 25 times.
5) Compatibility. I am now able to run EA games again!!! And it requires NO MODIFICATION!!! I spent $20 on an EA package and then upgrade to Win2k. Those suckers locked up during the install!! ALL 4 OF THEM. But XP put them in a plays them like a dream. Well.....I hope. I've only tried 1 but it gave me the most problem before. I'm also able to run OLD stuff like CivNET too!!
6) It's intergrated driver features. It has a Driver Roll Back feature, which allows you to turn the driver back to the previous one WITHOUT reinstalling!!!! And it also has a Driver Resilency feature that is supposed to reinstall any driver files that become corrupted.
7) System Restore. I don't know how many times I've instructed people at work to use this after they lobotimized their system....and it's fixed it! (P.S: This feature is also in WinME)
8) MSCONFIG, SYSEDIT, and other cool programs that were taked out of Win2k. They are all back in WinXP.
9) The Task Bar is also very cool. It has a new inovation of "Program Grouping". So once the bar gets filled it starts puting together common programs. Like IE or Notepad. A SS would really help here but its a space saver. :D
10) Intergrated picture printing feature. When you double click on a picture it open in the Picture and Faax viewer. From here you can.....duh....fax it or print it. You can also Right-Click on it and open it in a image editor. But If you decide to print, it will walk you through a wizard for printing and give you the option to pick the size. It can print full page or 5x7 or 3x5's or wallets! It's really cool!!

Things I don't like about Windows XP Professional:
1) It was OVER 2 GB to install. about 2.2 GB to be exact!!
2) I also dislike the constant connection to the internet. For example there is a port open in the built in firewall (Which is REALLY easy to configure, BTW) for synorisation with the Atomic Clock. This is really unnessary. And I'm looking for a way to disable it.
3) The installation took about twice as long as other versions of windows.....but I guess that was to be expected.

Well there you have it. The Low-down on WinXP from a 10 day user. ;)

Thanks for the excellent post, Cornmaster!

Almost all your points, however, show us why MS should be eradicated as an entity. All the bugs, errors, crashes of prior OSs you mention are DEFECTS, and in any other consumer product, would warrant criminaly and civil prosecution for fraud. If a car, for instance, quit working, stalled, broke down all the time, etc.... it would be recalled and fixed. Ditto for any other American product. But software, and in particular, M$, seems immune not just from the sword of justice, but the psychological mind-fu*k (as it is called in academia) has most people convinced that they should happily pay more money for yet another attempt to fix problems and deliver on prior promises.

If M$ had advertised win98 as the OS of the future, and it only crashed 25 times per day for the average user, would it have sold? Probably not.

So I don't view it as a "privilige" to pay those greedy bastards yet again to fix something that should have worked in 1993, when they put the likes of OS/2 and DR DOS out of business.

And it is the ulitimate rape of people in the world to connect the OS to the internet, or limit, or track, in any way, shape, or form my own hardware usage or changes.

I'm a pretty peaceful guy, but absolutely nothing gets me madder, faster, than the disgusting rapes by MS of users and competing developers. Look at what MS did to the browser world. Almost no choice anymore. I can't even view this very BBS without errors now (I use NETSCAPE). TF says "85%" of the people use MSIE, and so the rest of us are not worth the effort to have properly displayed pages. It is not TF's fault... it is the deliberate sabotage by MS of the competitors, and then the "just swtich to MS and let them rape you" mentality. path of least resistance, and they know it. So destroy the company, and all the responsible people. The world does not need it!

After all, MS has single-handedly slowed the progress of the PC and technology for over 10 years now.... I thouroughly understand the technology, pending legal cases, US patent and copyright laws, etc... so it's not an offhand comment. MS should be destroyed... the empire is build on illegal business practices, and principle must reign supreme. We cannot say "but what would we do without them", and let the "end justify the means". They are rich and powerful in the software industry because they have broken US laws, back to 1983. Legally, they are liable for the entire value of the company and all its stock. It is time for the debt to be settled, and the money returned to those it was swindled from... the individual users, corporations, and the US government.

The ill-gotten gains of Gates, et. al., should simply be returned to the US treasury, and all MS intellectual property released, without copyright restriction, to the pubic domain. :)

A certain number of employees would be funded to transition users and corporations from the MS OS. The name windows, and all MS trademarks, would be permanently released into the public domain, with no owner.

BTW, the entire software industry would also be held accountable. Bug-ridden software would be required to be fixed, and the full purchase refunded until the fix, if users chose. Subsequent releases would be illegal unless free (or free of bugs, incompatabilities, glitches).

As I thoroughly understand the entire development and business cycle of software, I say this is not only possible, but must be done to protect the unwitting buyers and users. Rape is still rape, even if the vicitm does not fully understand they have been raped!

OK, I could go on. And on. But that's enough. I want open, fair, fully functional software products, and full prosecution for past deeds. And I want the standard to be that which we use in other civilian products!

Hey, the nice thing is that anyone who may not agree is of course totally free to shell out the $$$ for anything they want. LOL, and maybe they enjoy the promised single mouseclick that does the dishes, too.

Win2k has NEVER crashed here. And I do play with Windows and run funny programs. Thank you very much. ;)

And starlifter, here's my dream scenario:
WinXP is released, but because it's too expensive, no company will buy it, but every indivitual gets it and installs a crack which makes WinXP think it's legal. Thus, Windows will go backrupt and all their technology will be open for public. ;)

However, I don't think I'll see this happen soon. :( Perhaps Linux will rule the virtual world some day...

But WinXP is still awesome and had I not gotten it for free I WOULD actually pay for it. And I don't pay for any software!!

I even write freeware.

Check out: http://www.angelfire.com/geek/cornempire/iframe.htm for my free software page!! (Shameless Plug!!)
Hey, cool. You are quite a creative programmer!

I tried downloading the mouse program, and this came up:

"Great, now you've gone and done it. You've broken the Internet. Way to go!
Actually, we couldn't find the page you requested. Please check the URL."

I'll check back to the site and finish reading it later! I saw your FreeCiv notes... I'd heard that someone (group) was making a free version of Civ. I wonder if that ever happened? All bugs could be fixed. But without the original Civ II source code, the "personality" of the game would not be "true", I wouldn't think :).

Damn....stupid broken links.

Here is my newest program: http://www.angelfire.com/geek/cornempire/tsbdp.htm

Of course it's still beta and includes all the previous programs plus a calculator and a search program and launcher program that I'm working on. I think the interface is the coolest part of the new program.....and the magic I did on the Start Menu. ;) (This includes the mouse typer.)

"Welcome to the TSBDP page. Better known as the "Top Secert Beta Download Page"."

hummmmm....

:_)

Amount of days XP has been on my system: 6

The things I have noticed:
1 It still crashes. Why does the OS still allow programs to crash the entire system?
2 It crashes during installation. Why does the OS crash when being installed? There is no other program besides XP to blame for this. I never had this problem with 98/98SE/2000/NT 4.0.
3 It looks better than all the other OSes.
4 It is different enough from Windows 2000 that it is a bit confusing. Some of the features I liked about 2000 were changed, and I can't see why yet.
5 Driver Rollback. Didn't work for me. I installed an unsigned video driver for my Matrox video card and had system crashes relating to that immediately after. I could only get the system back up in safe mode. When I tried to do the drive rollback there were no drivers to roll back to, accordign to the OS. If I didn't know as much about computers I would have had to pay someone to take care of the problem because the "feature" driver Rollback didn't work.

Now I am still learning to work with the OS so I am giving it some time......but as of now Win2000 seems better becasue it would only crash every few days, and XP crashes about 2 or more times a day.

As to product activation. I have never heard of corporate gold but from what I have heard both Professional and Home versions have to be registered with MS. I have the Professional Beta (Evaluation) version, Build 2526 and I had to register that, thru the internet.

Only happened to me once in 2.5 weeks. :p

I never had trouble with XP, but on my current rig Win98 crashes 5 times during each install. Win200o crashed once in 3 installs. Win95 never crashed.

3 It looks better than all the other OSes.

That is true. :D

I concure.

I haven't had personal experiance but in training class we exchanged out monitor driver for a keyboard. :) And the roll back worked. But they were both MS drivers...so I can't same I'm suprised.

I have build 2600. Non beta and non activation. People call it Corporate Gold but I don't know the proper name. It's WinXP Professional...that I'm using.
