Ok, thanks for correcting my understanding here guys. I guessed I always have used it properly, but with an incorrect understanding of how it works. Tbh I think it should be based on the amount of gpp coming in and not the # of sources (# of sources makes no sense to me if they are putting in disproportionate amounts of gpp!).
@ Obsolete: I think you might find your strategy considerably more difficult in BtS. Two things stand out to me right away:
1) Your first great person will often be a great spy because the GW now gives GSpy instead of GE points. An early great spy can be very powerful, but I don't think it fits in with your strategy since a) you can't rush the pyramids with a GSpy and b) settled Gspies don't produce hammers.
2) The AI is MUCH more prone to attack you now if you have low power. Plus they can see your cities and see that you don't have much in the way of defenses. Closed borders doesn't stop spies!
I tried out your start with de Gaulle and had both of these experiences. In fact I ended up with multiple great spies and that put a serious cramp on things. I also got DoW'd on by HC. I was able to manage it, but in the end I didn't have horses, which I think is also very problematic for this strategy. That leads me to:
3) Cavalry have been pushed back and cuirassiers are not as strong. The AI also builds MANY more units. And if you don't have horses (common in my experience although all of the games you've posted, you have had them in your 2-city empire), you have to tech all the way to military science (not so easy) to get grens or else figure out a different approach.
