Nah, they just looked at the literal letter of the law, which was obviously not designed to deal with cases like this, and made a ruling.
We might as well have robots as judges, if they're going to act like this.

I can't really believe that in the USA a 17-year-old has to serve 10 years in jail for having consentual sex (oral or not) with a 15-year-old girl. Not only should this not be against the law, 10 years is also a ridiculously long sentence for someone of that age comitting what can barely be termed a crime. This doesn't just suck for the guy, this isn't just unfair, this is completely outrageous. If every time two teenagers with a small age difference had sex the older one was locked up for ten years, the only people still walking the streets in the USA would be Catholics and ugly people.
If I lived in the place where this guy comes from / got sentenced, I would immediately start protesting against this, or storm the prison by force and free him if the authorities remained obstinate. It's an utterly intolerable and perverse sentence.

I don't understand why someone would go to jail for something like this. Here the age of consent is 15, and it used to be 14 (and it went to 15 because of a stupid ex-communist leader). I see the point of ages of consent, but personally the ones in USA are exaggerated.
