playing regent im spain, playing on a europe map. ive taking the whole peninsula that spain is located in real life. distroyed portugal and was building troops to attack the celts who were NE of me. (where france is). i had about 15 or so swordsmen in a stack and maybe 9 in another. then rome demands 59 gold, i say no. they declair war on. so now ive signed a RoP with celts to get to rome (italy). and so now im up against legionarys. my swords have done barly anything to their UUs and every city of mine is building swordsmen except my capital (which is building great library). how am i going to beat those legionarys???

well thats good if i want to keep them bottled up for reinforcements but if im going to attack that tip is worthless (no offense)

ive killed their first wave. theyve sent a miesly*sp? 2 legions 3 archers and a spear as their second wave.

With catapults and spears.

Fortify spears on high ground to force the Legions onto flat ground, pelt them with catapults, then finish them off with swords.

Don’t try to advance out of advantageous terrain until most of the Legions are gone. Then, gather together a huge stack of units, that’s your SoD, and go take his cities.

AH HA! i have gotten a military alliance against the romans so now its only gonna be me moving through celtic territory w/o a fight.

well i can.... but my workers are ocupied at the moment. BTW it wouldnt be nessasary. it seems the AI sent all they had and now is just sending 1 or 2 legionarys every 3-4 turns. ill take them down easily. next comes celts. i would start a story in "stories and tales" but im not good with logs or storytelling.

ACUALLY ill try it.

catapults and massive numbers of swords is the answer. Workers busy? Too bad, the war is more important :P

I once conquered the greeks and their pesky Hoplites using 14 catapults and 20 war chariots. No iron. But all greek cities fell!

Catapults... or wait till med.inf. And even then things will be hard.

<<Measley. Enables. Necessary. And they are the Pyrenees. Luv the Demon Spellchecker  >>

The Legionary is mostly used as an offensive unit so each city should not have all that many. After the first Legionary, it should be spears defending. Once you grab a city, you should be able to get peace from Rome.

I generally avoid wars with Rome, Carthage or Greece in the AA. The cost of this war for you will probably exceed that 59 gold. Once the MA comes along and you have pikes, med inf and trebs, they will no longer have an advantage.

If your capital is building the Great Library, this means that you can open an embassy with france and sign an alliance with Kelts against Roma.
This way you could wait a couple turns for the Celts to take the first wave of Legionaries before sending your own forces to Rome, taking cities after cities easily.

Like most people said so far, catapult is the key! And the best part is that you don't even need a barracks to build them.;)

As for the workers, consider building more and more. It will help your production and food input much more than you can think of firsthand.

Outmaneuver them. Build a bunch of galleys and drop some horses off in southern italy (I'm assuming the Legions are all in the Pyrenees at the moment. Raze a city or two, then get back onto the galleys before the legions show up. Meanwhile, form a line of swords, spears, and catapults to keep the Legions from getting to your cities.

Attack with the legions with swords in the open were they don't get much of a defensive bonus, you will probably lose more units but if you let them attack you, your spearmen wil probably die quickly. Try to take all their iron too.

PS-Use catapults to soften them up first.
