Good Nations

Do they still exist. Nations used to do things for the right reasons. Such as the britian declaring war on the germans in ww2.

Nations do not do things for the 'right' reason, only in their own self-interest.

Speaking of Britain, I didn't see them declaring war over Studentenland (sp?) for the 'right' reason either...

And in some rare cases, things that they do in their self-interest, are good. Britain and USA declared war on Nazi Germany because it was treating their dominant position in the world, not for some idealistic reasons, however, they did the "right" thing.

BTW, Britain did not declare war over Sudetenland. It (along with France) GAVE it to Hitler in Munchen in an effort to avoid war.

Britain only declared war because they promise Poland they would. And this is the same country that take over other countries and run them for their own benefit and tried to obliterate the native culture.

Vietnam on the other hand fought a war to get rid of foreign occupiers. Theirs was not a war of aggression.

for Britain you could argue that - but the USA? - seeing that Germany declared war on them 4 days after Pearl Harbor... They would probably even reduced their support for Britain and just put every effort into fighting Japan, if not for that tiny fact that Germany joined the Japanese in this war.

@OP: There are no "Good" nations, but self-interest and democratic ideas/human rights/whatnot can share the same goal

First, a nation are a nebulous ethic grouping, so they cannot do "good" or "bad" things. Second, generally a state does thing for it ruler's self-interest. They will do only the "right" thing if it coincides with these interests, and do so according.

New Zealand isnt britians puppet, Britian went to war in Iraq, we didnt, Britian went to war in the falklands we didnt, If Britian came and tried to whale of nuclear test on a pacific island you could expect the same response France or Japan gets. If a british nuclear carrier wanted to visit wellington we would tell them to bugger off just like america or australia. New Zealand is nobodys puppet.

Britian has no control over New Zealand at all. Its a coincidence our queen happens to also be Britians Queen but goverment in britian has absolutly no power over the affairs of New Zealanders. If america says "go to war and you will get a free trade agreement" we wont go.

Anyway back on topic, New Zealand is a good country because:

We give millions of dollars to aid poor people around the world.
We send our army to make and keep the peace all over the world.
New Zealand was the first country in the world to allow woman to vote.

Thats 3 things that New Zealand did which are good, Could someone please say 3 things New Zealand did that were Bad or explain how my 3 things werent good. Other wise New Zealand is a good country, which means they exsist, which means thread is finished, lets go home, whats for Dinner?

(also i know other countrys are good as well, just making a case for new zealand at the moment)

The concept of the nation state itself requires a nation to place its interest first and foremost. Very rarely will a nation place morality over superiority, and when a nation does that it often benefit the nation one way or another or cause that nation to be weaken.

So there are no genuinely "good" nations which "do things for the right reason".
