got dsl, wanna host full game, super map(30000 sq.) everything optimized by expert

Please Hartster, I realize that it may as well not matter, this being a small thing, but I find it important enough to mention; In the future I will kindly ask you to e-mail the good doctor of dreams with such conversation since these are exactly the kind of things that repel serious gamers away upon landing on this website. They come, go to the last page, ignoring the endless raving and little worthless comments which ALL of us may be condemned for inbetween, see that this is not some hardcore gaming forum but a place for idle chat, and then leave just as quick. I know first hand, because I am such a dedicated player who goes to many threads but leaves upon seeing its decadence and lack of appreciation for the depth of the game. I have and still am accepting those who are not even on their best days masters but to lure them was my original intent, which I still partially cling to, and so i would ask to refrain from whitewashing away the mood of maturity, which I hope the posts here honestly convey, with things unrelated to the greatest gaming challenge to exist today.

some posts just aren't worth replying to... but hopefully with the aid of very helpful world time zone calculators all confusion will be a thing of the past... welcome texta to this thread, please post Nic a timetable of when you are available to play so the planning can cease and the playing can commence. After all this heartache and banter I look forward to a serious game - one in which I can forsee some grudges adding spice and liveliness. With timetables still to be finalised and people needing adequate notice {which is quite fair and reasonable} it seems my holiday won't be holding anything up....

Welcome Texta, to my domain of games. I am Nicosar, the Gameplayer. I will spare you the pedantic banter that I roll out as the glittering and pretentious carpet of greetings I use to lure those lesser folk and keep them here, if it is my wish to do so for whatever reasons, since I am familiar with you, having found you and contacted you myself, interested, no doubt, by your claim to skill which ever attracts me to those that make them, and I will take this posting of yours as a sign that you are merely replying to my invitation and not auditioning for a slot in this great trial of wits, but that is all just as well!

There are 7 players in total, the limit that this nevertheless epic and complete game of strategy will allow, if you should choose to join it and in the end be found acceptable, which, lest some great unfortunate cataclysm should strike I'm sure will eventually happen as sure as I am the master player of this fine sport you also claim kingship to. But I host this game, which means more than just opening the program and being connected to as you'll find out if you remain long enough to do so, and that means that you will first have to knock me off my throne if you seek the title which hopefully you still claim with a much desired spirit and fire that is so pitifully absent in the VAST majority of all these other so-called gamers who would constantly nip on the heels of their betters like sheep-dog seeking to impress their patrons, the masters of the weaklings, which it would seem, are far more abundant than us who prefer to claim, if anything, only the highest forms of might, sparing the following of a slack and trifle hoarde.

If you are indeed interested in pursuing this great challenge of the strong and resolute with any seriousness, seriousness which in its intensity is far more entertaining and fulfilling than the lazy, slow-paced and 'casual' games proffered by those plagued by a perennial puberty and everlasting indecisiveness born of slightly liquefied minds, not yet hardened by gut and vision, then I would suggest that you, as made evident just above by my good colleague the doctor, make a nice fat schedule for me to work with, which I will explain;

You see, our last unfortunate fellow player was a neurologist and surgeon, and you know how they can be, always busy, performing complex surgeries with the most complex organ of the body that last sometimes 20 hours, and that just for one session of the same patient, and you can imagine what kind of tight, uncompromisable sleeping routine they must follow in order to promise their days some stability and slight degree of relaxation with firm habits, and so I could not bring myself to ask him for a more leniant schedule, considering his noble proffession (and a MOST gracious and flower-ladden tongue out of which he spoke nothing but flagrant niceties), but, alas, the game was stopped when there were 7 ready to go, since his few measly hours, entirely not his fault we're all sure, comprised only 2 1/2 hours everyday for me to try and use in the synchonization of a terrific cast of players assembled from many far reaches, which requires some leniancy and just a dash of sacrifice from the players.

So, needless to say, I was forced, for the good of the game and its other more available players, though at great pains to my own heart considering that here was a stout man, and well spoken indeed!, that had NO choice whatsoever in regards to his hours, and bless him, he even said to me 'those hours are what I have given you. I'm sorry but the world prevents me from adding to them any further, as I wish I could and would GLADLY give, but there is a little girl right now who suffers from astemiodilamotus, a most crippling form of tumor, and I must try and save her'. It was heart-breaking. But so,we parted and I went on the search for more players, grieved at the loss of one so fine but resolute on continuing this game, and here we are!!

So, if you would be so gracious, I would ask you to comprise a weekly shedule with as many availabilty slots throughout the days, around which you could perhaps plan other things not dependent on international synchronization, which I may then use to plot agreeable game times open to everybody's good timing. I would ask you to be reasonable with your own hours, lest you be one of these truly fanatical players such as I have recieved which will donate blood for this game, but I also implore a fair degree of generosity, since it is our gifts that bless the world much more so than that which is received by the world... *ahem*, and I will also mail you, repeating only the crucial aspects of this post, so that you may receive word of your (admittedly, limited) requirements for membership as soon as possible.

I hope to hear from you soon, oh honorable challenger so full of splendid vigor, but soon we shall see if this is merely a vigor of the throat and tonsils!!

Nicosar the Gameplayer

Don't worry texta. You will get used to our verbose host. A phrase as simple as, "I need you to send me a schedule of your available playing times.", will oft times become a screen full of adverbs and adjectives, similies and metaphors. Not to mention the occasional delusion of grandeur. Sorry Nicosar.....I had to get in my daily poke to the ribs. :D

i thought because it was on my mind at the time to mention it and I thought as you the host would respect and also understand why I worote what I wrote but of course you couldnt pick it but i wont explain why I wrote what you believed should of emailed it instead...lateral thinking maybe im not sure...well nicosoar i do apoligize for explaining why dreamer couldnt participate when it was s'pose to commence, amd as i have said many times i am here and I am ready...so bring it on

i will make a schedule, however I have one question in my mind. How could it take somebody more then 2 and a half hours to wipe out wannabe players like urself?

on such a huge map it will take a while to find the miniscule civs of little players.... Brisburn has left me some free daytime hours, most my family is working so I'm hanging out with my little bro who is interested in civ too... but due to shortsightedness I filled my CD wallet up with music and a BSD install disc, no Civ2 - could someone on a decent connection upload the game to me? I have nocd cracks/patches etc, just need the whole disc {- video if you want} zipped up... I've created a civ ftp directory on my server for this purpose -
ftp.sincorp.org : port 21
login : civ2@sincorp.org {full string essential}
pwd : s1dm

I'm getting a few other nifty files uploaded there in the next few days so feel free to check it out and dump relevant patches/scenarios etc there if you wish

Just happenned to notice that Smash closed the thread in Civ2 - General Discussions. I hope that doesn't happen here, so perhaps we should keep posts on the polite side. :D Although it is true that Insurgent was posting e-mails that were intended for his eyes only, the flavor of those e-mails are not far off from some of the posts in THIS thread. I just don't want this one to get locked down as well. Only a suggestion. ;)

a very good idea General... maybe not practical, but worth a shot. I have the game now {ta Nic} and there are a few useful utils on ftp site {linked for those unable to master ftp to www.sincorp.org/civ2 } including rules/package etc for Optimus Prime if anyone loses them. Avail times for this week are -

tues 0800 - 1600
wed 0300 - 1600
thu 1800 - 2359
fri 0000 - 1700
sat none
sun none
mon 0900 - 1700
tues 2200 - 2359
then back to normal {24hrs over week, no weekends unless I can clear some}

I can't actually play ALL these hours but can work schedule around playing times within these hours.

And in case anyone was in doubt as to my greatness and fitness to play this game I just had one with Nic and a mystery Apol player {yes, he got goaded into a game} and managed to get my only city wiped out by barbs at about turn 20... clearing all bad karma in advance : )

Dearest Nicosar,

While we await the game of all games and stomach the arrogance of those inferior, I have engaged in several AI games on King difficulty. I had almost forgotten how much I love this game. I certainly hope things are progressing and that one day we are able to meet on the battlefield.

I understand schedules are such that it is difficult to get a game of such ambition started and want to wish you the best of luck.

As I understand it now, we have a total of 6 players and are set to get started for the most part? I just read Narz's game reports and must admit I am excited to get started. Excellent job Narz.

Narz, I may join you for this sundays session ... perhaps I will be the fourth to lead the Americans and change the name of the capital city!

Hope to see you all soon (virtually in game, of course).

The game has 7 players, since the migratory Doctor has decided his new locale has heard of computers before and the new arrival which has yet to give me a schedule. I do not want to press him with uneeded haste since he should be respected just as much as the first arrival, even though that ephemeral player turned into just a passerby, but I urge him to give me his information so that the game can swing around this one final loose hinge into its starting position.

I know it has been about two weeks since my offer first found itself staring back at you upon entering the players forum, and I hold those who have displayed patience with great honor.

I await now of course, just as you, and have been relaxed from any consuming duties that kept me in front of this sometimes wretched screen a double shift inbetween work and the arranging of players and game mechanics, being able to only come here a few times a day and respond if needed, but taking a momentary sabattical from this over-lordship I have imposed upon my domain here in this thread.

So, I will leave this comment as the corner-piece of necessary steps that must be taken to spark this tournament to its grand and high-destined life, assuming that nobody else has any truly critical part to add to it, all the schedules and everything else in place, except that I had to do some touch up work to the cities yesterday upon opening a random map to inspect the new graphics in-game and finding they were all floating slightly above their intended squares. This has easily and quickly been ammended and the new CITIES.GIF file will be shipped to you electronically.

One last thing....

I AM QUITE AWARE THAT ALL OF YOU HAVE ENGAGED IN OTHER GAMES TO SUPPORT THIS TERRIBLE ADDICTION INBETWEEN THIS GREAT FEAST OF VICE THAT IS TO COME, BUT I AGAIN REMIND YOU THAT THIS GAME WILL TAKE PRECEDENCE ABOVE ALL OTHER GAMES, NOT ONLY SINCE IT IS THE MOST DEPENDENT ON PLAYER FLEXIBILITY AND A GREAT AND PRECISE COORDINATION BUT ALSO BECAUSE YOU WILL BE HELD IN DISHONOR TO ABANDON THIS FORMIDABLE CHALLENGE TO A MORE PITIFUL GAME WHERE YOUR PATHETIC STRING OF VILLAGES MAY BE ALLOWED TO SURVIVE.

DEAR TEXTA, THIS MESSAGE IS INTENDED FOR YOU WITH NO TONE ABOVE THAT OF A GOOD HOST WHO MUST SEE TO ALL THE ENDS OF A GOOD GAME, BUT IT MUST STILL BE BOLD AND LOUD: 6 PLAYERS IS FINE BY ME, SHOULD IT COME TO THAT, AND SINCE THIS GAME HAS BEEN DELAYED AND TRUDGED THROUGH TOO LONG A TIME, I AM FORCED TO DECLARE THAT YOU HAVE 2 MORE DAYS FOLLOWING THE RELEASE OF THIS MESSAGE TO DELIVER YOUR HOURS OF PLAY, MAKING THE DEADLINE THURSDAY THE 26TH AROUND MID-AFTERNOON PACIFIC STANDARD GMT -8 TIME.

I hope you understand the reason behind announcing to you such a restriction and limit, seeing as it is not on behalf of my impatience and bad judgement but on those of players who have grown almost weary, I should by now think, with waking up to check a game-site that is all but devoid of the true activity of playing we shall all be immersed in come just a few more days at the very latest.

I bid you all keep faith, it is the strongest confidence and the longest lasting fuel for the persevering mind.

And do not worry if you feel the old Nicosar has shed his un-sanded rhetoric of boulders and ash for a graceful roll of the tongue, for this should scare you a bit more now, seeing as it is despite its softness harder and more serious; as the game draws nearer I am simply starting to play the role of a lord who need not be rough to get his way, imposing it by force and not words.

I must reply to one aspect of your previous post Nicosar.
I AM QUITE AWARE THAT ALL OF YOU HAVE ENGAGED IN OTHER GAMES TO SUPPORT THIS TERRIBLE ADDICTION INBETWEEN THIS GREAT FEAST OF VICE THAT IS TO COME, BUT I AGAIN REMIND YOU THAT THIS GAME WILL TAKE PRECEDENCE ABOVE ALL OTHER GAMES

There is a game on sunday afternoons that Narz and I are in and have been in for some time. Narz is the host oof this game as a matter of fact.
BECAUSE YOU WILL BE HELD IN DISHONOR TO ABANDON THIS FORMIDABLE CHALLENGE TO A MORE PITIFUL GAME WHERE YOUR PATHETIC STRING OF VILLAGES MAY BE ALLOWED TO SURVIVE.

It would be just as dishonorable for the two of us, especially Narz, to just cut those other players loose after we have put so much time into the game. (Near on 2 months now).

Surely you agree and understand. :goodjob:

 Sorry Nico but that thread is kind of amusing. By the way, my Sunday game takes presidence over this one, which I'm debating whether to stay in or not... a huge map, with slow growing cities and slow building settlers not to mention techs arriving at 1/10 the normal rate... with seven players (assuming you get 7) playing turn after turn... If we play four hours a week on a game like this, I figure it'd run until Christmas '03. By the way, my personal challange is still open if you'd like to take me up on it ;)

- Narz :king:

That thread is not amusing Narz, it does nothing more than illustrate the poor attitude of that community. I am surprised Atawa even came here to post a link to such garbage.

Clearly, the members of that community are not too bright, nor able to comprehend the written word.

I have responded in kind in that thread. Have a look if you dont mind reading posts that are more than a couple sentences long, something the members of apoly seem to have trouble with.

No, no, do not worry, general and Narz! I have long since taken pity on your tournament, since by its length and level of complexity and transmutations should rightly even be called the father of this thread. Although, nature always betters itself with each rising generation....

As for this other little 'incident', yes folks, i am sorry to announce, but out of good reason after all, that I, Nicosar, did indeed accept someone to a challenge. Alas, I needed to, though the results were probably significant of the cursed fate and bad jugdement of it all, since I wish to attract ever more skill as I re-enter the world of online strategy versus other humans and this was potentially the only way to get those unearthly (well, quite earthly actually, which is the problem....not for long though, Nicosar does more than play games) and garbage-brained noise-producing automatons from utterly polluting that thread and denying me any chance to build a repetoire of good players.

As for the game itself, you believe what you want. It seems Narz betrays his gullibility to believe those that talk more and louder than those who speak truthfully and without derision in his note to humor which comes, strangely, at the forefront of his other comments which seem ominously related, but I will only say one more thing on the issue. Narz, we had this discussion before and before I argued against it but eventually lay aside saying that I only hoped the availability slots didnt fall on your game time because that would be a pity, but not forbidding or such a thing, and that you would bring this up again just as the noisesome mob comes around the corner with torches shows to me the true strength that composes your foundations, and your strengths and loyalties. It would seem they are quickly subverted, which will be put to good use in this game, which I hope you'll play still, not sensing hostility but directness spilling from between these words.

As for the slowness and hugeness, yes they are a problem, if you do not like freedom of choice and inactivity in which time things more complex than just furious building and renewing quickly-obsoleted structures and defences can occur (tell me, in the regular-paced civ do you ever finish a wonder or improvement without two or three more becoming available by science in the meantime?....what folly, how many, not just one lads, pyramids upon pyramids were built before the very concept of a library was even introduced), but otherwise I think you should trust my mastery and know that this is indeed the tried and loved way to play civ at a higher level.

My query as to the limits were also answered, to only my disapointment, and I think I shall go on a minor crusade to hoist Old Meyer from his pinnacle of flashy-but-inferior games to bring him back down to the welling-source of strategy that is civ 2 and see if he will not but ammend these two simple numerical faults, which for him should be naught but two strokes of the eraser and an equal amount with the writing side. How, you ask? words, friends, they are more powerful than your poor verbal skills could ever know, and I have more weapons than those besides!

Texta has but a few hours to come forth and put up a discourse of his hours and then the schedule will be rewritten and playing will commence.

-Nicosar the Gameplayer-

I caution all of you to avoid this bum, and his "partner" Father, Atawa played him, destroyed him, and this guy had TWO techs at start, and didn't bother to mention it to Atawa, and still lost badly.

He represents the worst of our hobby, the blowhard that cheats and blows it off, and his "partner" makes convienent excuses for him.

The save is posted in Atawa's link to apolyton, this guy's duplicity is there for all to see.

Some "expert", you sir are a DISGRACE to our hobby.

Oh my.Seems this kinda stuff follows Nico like a shadow.

Once again:we don't do that here.

Hate to say it but Nicosar, your welcome is running out quick.I know,I know..but the attitude invites it and, unfortunatly, comes back right at you.

others-lets keep this for discussing the setup of the game whether or not it happens or not..
