GOTM 163 Spoiler

There is an entire thread dedicated to this subject. Look up "map analysis" as thread title. Everything is explained there.

Thanks much Ali,my mistake, you wrote about this thread when was that discussion with WW II map hidden resources, but ..I did not read carefully..Can show me a thread with this unknown for me tech hidding strategy,I don't find ? I know now,I wasted more years with this game for nothing:)),playing 'blind'...

- 950 - Shantung founded. Marco built.
- 875 - Another nomad from a hut. Romans exchanged writing for trade, shared maps which revealed third city and an Egyptian town on the other continent, accessible via south pole.
Vikings are receptive, Egyptians and English are icy. Luckily they all have maps so after some gifting, I will have all enemy locations. Let's have a chat with them.
Interesting: Vikings have only two cities and are blocked from expansion by Egyptians, which in turn have 3 cities.
English are by far the largest AI civ, with 4 cities and a separate mini-continent, close to Chinese Core Region.
Unsurprisingly, Egyptians are at war with vikings and Romans.
All civs now enthusiastic, all maps obtained and all techs exchanged. What do I do now? I'll build a colony on the English land, with access to a whale and spice.
- 850 - Whatever was being researched before was obtained via tech exchange so now -> feudalism. I think I will build Sun Tzu and start spamming vet elephants.
Chinan founded. Started accumulating production in great wall to switch to the academy after feudalism is discovered.
Three vans are also being produced to support Beijing.
- 800 - Kaifeng and Ningpo founded.
- 775 - Paoting and Yangchow founded. Chariot popped barbs north of the Roman civ.
- 725 - Feudalism -> construction. Naples founded, trireme with a settler heads for the English land.
- 675 - Issus founded in England. I think it's the right time to slow down research and focus on building Sun Tzu and elephants.
- 575 - Pottery from a hut.
- 500 - Sun Tzu Academy has been constructed.
- 475 - Cunaxa founded. Many cities have already begun creating elephants, I'm also building settlers to connect cities with roads and transfer units more efficiently.
- 375 - Cremona founded.
- 275 - Traded maps with every civ to update the strategic view. They are all still enthusiastic. They won't know what hit them. Meanwhile I continue the expansion to cover potential respawn sites.
- 200 - Romans built HG. This is a nice coincidence because I have already made preparations to begin my conquests with the fall of Rome.
- 25 - Looks like the England crew (Army West) got to their positions sooner than Army South (Rome). In that case, I will start with England.
1 - Canterbury captured.

:)
- 575 - Pottery from a hut.
Reading now with 10 years late:)) about hidden tech and other tricks, you obtained a big 'joker' tech pottery, normally an advanced tech.If I reload n n times to obtain pottery,I think need 100 reloads:)).
Good luck !

It seems I am way behind Ali's game so far, it is doubtful we will be able to catch up, but let's see,
In no small part my early success in this game was due to a nomad in -3300 from a hut that was not too far away. This allowed my supported settler to join the city a turn after it became size 2, making it size 3. Beijing naturally grew to size 4 much faster not having to support a settler. Soon after Republic was established and celebrations took Beijing from size 4 to 7 with no infrastructure in the city.

Romans and English have been pretty nasty in this game. I regret not having allied with Egyptians earlier when they were at war with the English. They offered alliance several times and I turned them down because they obviously wanted me to declare war on English. Later when I wanted the alliance they were not interested.

The respite from English advances came when barbarians took Hastings. The English unit near Beijing disappeared and for many turns the English were busy trying to take Hastings back which was eventually razed in the process.

The same thing happened much earlier with Vikings. They lost a major city to barbarians and then were preoccupied with taking it back. It too was eventually razed. Due to distance they were unlikely to cause any actual problems but they were hostile for most of the time.

The Romans grew very big early on and have been supreme pretty much all the time. They consistently refused my offers of alliance. Twice I had to pay cash tributes to them (150g in 860 and 800g in in 1380) just to get them to agree to a tech exchange. They also killed my None settler at a time when my city was maxed out, my Engineer disbanded, and my Sewer and Aqueduct sold. Soon after the loss of my settler I got 2 pollutions and had no way of cleaning it up. I decided to bribe an Egyptian settler at a pretty hefty cost (708g) rather than try to produce a new Engineer. The decision to pay Romans 800g in 1380 for a chance to exchange for Feudalism could have been avoided with proper planning. I should have risked a couple of diplomats instead and send for tech stealing. Instead I waited till the last moment hoping they would agree to peace and they never did.

Overall this has been an exciting OCC though I have had much more exciting ones before (Swiss in the crowded Europe GOTM was among the most memorable). I am beefing up my defenses as I am getting close to the space race. Fortunately here the geography is such that I need not defend on all sides.

This was a surprisingly fertile map and I was able to expand like crazy. I was hoping to conquer by 1ad, but fell short of that goal. Probably should have started military operations a little sooner. I did end up with a lot of triremes - maybe half as many as Peaster!;)

Wow! 4 civs destroyed with only 1 respawn! Was this luck or did you employ some respawn-hot-zone control technique?

Well, I don't know. I had 34 cities all over the map, and I had units posted in what I thought was the respawn hot-zone. I was a little surprised when the Celts didn't respawn, but I had sort of covered the globe by then. I wasn't so surprised by the lack of respawns the second and third times. My (totally undocumented) theory is that the AI looks for good city sites including at least one special, and if its first few are already inhabited it gives up. But the AI may be reacting to something as simple as the total number of cities relative to the size of the map.

Covering the globe had actually been my plan from the beginning. In GOMT 162 replays, there were occasional respawns on uncovered 1-square islands, preventing conquest until offensive boats or marines. So I got a lot of practice covering all the islands in 162 and I used that concept for 163. I thought I did a pretty good job with 42 cities at 1AD on this map.

Since I am no contender for the green star, here is the final part of my log.

I beefed up my defense before starting the space race with a battleship, an alpine, a marine, and a tank. They were useful as blockers but saw very little action. This was in no small part due to geography. The lake by Beijing helped a lot and so did the swamps and jungles around its perimeter. Romans sent nearly a dozen diplomats my way but they could not find a way to penetrate my perimeter. They brought in cavalry and cannons too but never used them against my defenses. The English sent only a soldier or two because they were busy dealing with barbarians. I built the battleship in case they try a naval attack from their mainland and they never did. Egyptians were friendly till the end and even offered alliance right before the end which I accepted. Vikings were too weak and too far to matter all game.

Unfortunately I wasn't as successful with respawns as grigor but I can't really complain either.

1 - Canterbury captured.
40 - York captured, Rome captured.
80 - London captured, Something razed, I didn't even notice the city name.
100 - Cannae founded.
120 - Coventry captured.
140 - Kaupang falls.
160 - Hastings falls. I don't have enough boats...
180 - Trondheim unfortunately razed.
Not much happened for a few turns, lots of troop movement, waiting for reinforcements, recuperating in captured cities.
240 - Memphis captured, Vikings out of the game. Germans spawned.
260 - Newcastle razed. English down to a single city. Romans provide surprising resistance to the charm of my elephants. It's probably because there is no road leading to their territory, I'm in the process of making one.
300 - Warwick razed. England has been defeated. Surprisingly no orange civ has been spawned.
320 - Germans annihilated. No blue civ has been spawned.
360 - Thebes and Heliopolis fall.
380 - Elephantine falls and Egyptians are out. Immediately Aztecs show up and declare war against French. So the blue has spawned after all, they just didn't build their city yet. I guess they need to build at least one city to show up on my diplomacy screen.
EDIT: Nope, Aztecs appeared on the diplomatic screen despite not having any cities. The good thing is that after exchanging maps I also got the location of French settler.
420 - Antium falls. Two more Roman cities to go. Aztecs and French eliminated. The latter only had a settler, the former actually built a city. Spanish spawn close by.
480 - Pompei falls. Madrid falls, removing the Spanish and the yellow from the game.

I finished the game soon after.
