GotM 169 Spoiler

I thought at the time that I played this phase very efficiently - I built something in Chicago almost every turn. Science came every 2 turns and wonders fell into place well. In retrospect, I should have spent more time irrigating Chicago for later growth - it stayed in size 14 from 140ad to 480ad. Is it possible I should have stopped everything and build a round of settlers? What is the optimum civ size before Democracy? I got to 40 cities, but maybe 6o is better?

I got fairly consistent 1-tech/turn for this entire cycle. I didn't keep track of Chicago size - after Refrigeration in 920 I started making farmland, and when Chicago maxed out at size 29 I was able to get 2 techs/turn.

I love Rep over monarchy since it responds so much better to the luxury setting. Sometimes 40% lux, sometimes 60% depending on what is best for the civ overall at the moment.... which vascilates back and forth as different threshold city counts are reached. If i remember correctly 36 cities is a key threshold in deity to make most size three cities celebrate at 40% lux and with one elvis, and that this begins to happen with some cities at about the 24 count. Myself i almost never use temples unless i am building super trade cities that might for whatever reason sometimes (most often not) need them for celebration growth beyond size 8 and/or size 12. Of course HG is extremely useful if able to get it, but i favor early rep and ics over monarchy even without HG. When the number of cities while in Rep causes multiple size ones to have a red face and/or black hat, usually this is a good time for 60% lux.
 
Having grossly underestimated playing time for GOTM 167, which most of you skipped, I got a very late start here. I have played past -1000 but not quite to -500 yet.

I just read all the early logs.

Now for the pre-game comments:
1. Players will consider not founding Chicago/Wounded Knee where the settler starts, but will then do so. The third city will be at (60,20).
There is no reason not to found Chicago immediately. I would have done so even if the settler was None which it was not. My third city was further away on the river. I typically space my cities out.
2. Most (all?) will become a Monarchy in -2450.
As far as I could tell from the logs no one made that date but all 3 reported ones are before -2000. In contrast mine was much later at -1450. Here is how that happened. Right from the start I decided to get burial from Aztecs so I sent my warrior south immediately. I started with Alphabet. Next Laws were not available and I did not want burial so I chose writing which is a useful tech and I knew from reading the opening comments that we cannot research straight to Monarchy anyway. After writing I did laws and then started on burial. All this while my warrior was moving south. I was hoping to run into Aztecs along the way but did not. I had to reduce tech spending from 60% to 40% to avoid discovering burial. Finally in -2150 I reached Tenochtitlan. The Aztecs demanded Code of Laws. I refused. They declared war. Next turn Burial was reluctantly discovered. To make matters worse, Monarchy was not a choice so I picked Bronze. I could have set science to zero and waste 40% on unneeded lux but I decided against that. In retrospect that was a good decision because when I reached peace with Aztecs the next turn they only exchanged for Laws (must have already discovered my other techs) and I got Bronze. [/quote]
3. Sending exploring units in the direction of the three other cities in North America will pay off.
While I have been fairly lucky with barbarians so far (no city loss) I had too many encounters with them and could not spare explorers for quite some time.
4. A key variation will be how a player manages growth in number of cities in the early game.

6. Everyone will build HG. Anyone considering space rather than conquest will also choose Colossus.
Like Major, French built Hanging Gardens in my game and it was not even close. Without that, deity is hard to manage with many cities. I have already built Marco and I am hoping to beat the English to Colossus.

Obviously build Chicago with the settler and make it the science city. Send a warrior south to meet Aztecs and get their techs. Send another warrior east to meet the English and the French.
Get rid of Barbarians in America.
Space ship and conquest both would work fine. Chinese, English, and French are not trireme reachable. In Spaceship strategy settle all the islands quickly to take advantage of trading with them.

I need to decide how to proceed. Space ship without both Colossus and Hanging Gardens would be an unusual endeavor. Shall I build Pyramids instead? Shall I save the vans for Copernicus or Michelangelo? Shall I switch to a war game and save the vans for Sun Tzu or the Great Wall? There is going to be some warfare in this game. I need to take the barbarian cities and likely have to take out Russians, French, and Japanese. This is also barbarian wrath. Somehow playing a war game on this map does not excite me, so I think I still go for space but build the Great Wall now.

This is a very unusual game. It has presented me with challenges rarely seen before. Thanks Inkerman.

Having lost Hanging Gardens to French, it was getting too difficult to stay in Monarchy because of the black heads. I switched to Republic but I have had to keep lux at 60% just to keep the rioters away; never mind celebrations. Even Chicago, with plenty of arrows and a temple cannot celebrate at size 3. It should be size 4 soon and I hope it will celebrate to size 5 but perhaps it will get stuck there again.

Another big challenge is to become supreme so I can be my own key civ. I have more techs, more cities, and more money than the French who are currently supreme, but their cities are larger than mine. With tech costs being higher than usual already this hurts a lot. I keep telling myself that the next new city is going to put me on top and it does not. (I could have tech bombed the English but I refrained hoping they would discover polytheism which they have been working on for some time.)

In retrospect, I have two regrets. One is not having studied the new regime of tech hiding and missing Monarchy by a long shot which hurt in early expansion. The other is not sending a dip early on to check out the defenses of barbarian cities. I got writing in -3300 and could have done this a lot earlier than I did (in -500). Not only some of these cities are decent size (right now Crow is my largest city at size 5, I have none at size 4, and a few at size 3) but also the settler defending them counts as a leader so you get 200g for killing it.

The decision to build Great Wall when I missed out on Colossus was a very good one. I should have planned for that from the outset given the barbarian wrath setting. While I have not seen any hordes yet, there have been a lot of barbarian attacks on my cities. Now I am not worried about them anymore. It also makes capturing those lucrative leaders a bit easier.

Having said that, I should have used my vans intended for Colossus and built Pyramids in -550 rather than wait for the Great Wall. Without the Gardens, celebration at odd sizes is next to impossible and Pyramids could have helped my cities grow faster. The Great Wall could have waited a few more turns.
