GOTM 38 Spoiler

thought i'd play through a second time to see how i could improve...finished that game in 1070ad with almost 24 million pop......

I'm at the late stages of the game I figure -- buying up cities with spies. Some of my cavalry is meeting only phalanx -- occaisionally there's a musket about -- I may have waited too long for the serious crunch.

ok then.......i just played through thinking of going to chivalry, map making, to trade, then to navigation.....i have a few stragglers left to kill off, maybe 3 cities left of which 2 i cannot see...it is 210ad, one of my cities with high trade has been building wonders; colossus, sun tzu's, hg, mag's, in that order.....at the rate which i developed techs, it complimented nicely the timing of building appropriate wonders

i must confess, i reset the game several times before i had the circumstances turn up that i found 2 free cities in huts(the odds for me were about 1 in 20) i am not sure how you could eliminate the ai's so quickly as to be finished in 140ad, as they regenerate in remote locations.........i suppose i could have built mag's a few turns earlier, but i doubt that would make up for the 15 turn discrepancy though

i was wondering and thought DoM could show the difference clearly with the submissions, the difference between finishing later with more pop and wonders vs. finishing early with smaller pop and wonders? i'll finish this game and submit it to you

Restarts was Off for GOTM38; are you retrying a different GOTM?

If you know how the score is put together you can figure that out from the Results page. Compare the regular Score with the GOTM Score, which more heavily weights earlier finish.

Only submit your FIRST play of the GOTM. You can replay and comment in the Spoiler, but don't send DoM more than one game. He has enough work on his hands...

In my for fun conquest game I already had knowledge from my real game, so there was definitely the unfair advantage there. However, you can hover your cursor over black tiles and analyze the numbers to determine where land is legimately, so that is one outlet available to fast conquest players.

As far as getting two tribes, yes I feel I was quite lucky but I don't think that its nearly 1 in 20 probability since I am fairly sure all 5 huts had the potential to produce tribes and remember that early in the game, you can't spawn barbarians (my second tribe was a horseman so I spawned all the huts fairly quickly). I claimed 50g, horseman, tribe, (something), tribe in that order.

I personally have the equation for the gotm score plugged into excel, so I can quickly determine the marginal growth rates required at any given turn to increase my gotm. It mostly comes down to planning, though. You need to know when you plan on ultimately completing your game, and plan so that most or all of your cities have their celebrations to hit their max pops at that date.

oops.....i figured from the 210ad position and looking at the demographics page, that a civ had regenerated, it turned out to be a rogue mongol city (sneaky settlers!).....DoM's game description, the term "no restarts" refers to the ai or to the human?....i am familiar with black ckicking, but that doesn't help to locate enemy cities....what and how do i plug into excel??? that sound interesting....the hut situation for me was various combinations of 25 gold, 50 gold, 100 gold, empty huts(lotsa), archers, horsemen, chariot, different techs (masonry, alpha, bronze mostly). advance tribes and wandering settlers are also possible, but as i explained before, i probly restarted 20 times before i found the 2 advance tribes

Seems like every time I attacked a new AI civ, the civ settled at least one settler into a new city. The Greeks did three, all on islands east of their home continent. If you have an Embassy with the civ (highly recommended at the beginning of an "Extinction Level Event") you can see the names of all their cities, including newly settled ones. There is also a trick to using the city screen to check the locations of your units that sometimes says "Near BongoVille" if your unit is nearer to an undiscovered city than any other. I lost patience with the Spanish, accepted a CeaseFire and gifted them up to Worshipful for a map exchange to discover the last missing city, then trashed my Rep and wiped them out.

Restarts refers always to the AI civs. It expires around AD1500 even if it is on.

There is a way to use black clicking to find cities - the map will not recenter if you black-click on a tile that has a city. You kinda need to know there is something in the area, or just have a LOT of patience.

A+ombomb uses Excel to recalculate his GOTM score. The formula is found on the GOTM webpage.

With Huts, you have no chance of getting an Advanced Tribe if the terrain under the Hut is not Plains or Grass, but you do have a chance of getting a Nomad. On a single continent, if you keep a Nomad it lowers your future chance of Nomads, but not ATs. There is some statistical probability estimates in this thread:
http://apolyton.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=69873
Those numbers are based on Deity difficulty level; there seems to be some variation in the relative stats based on difficulty (and empty huts based on Barb level?).

Like elephant said, I take the formula on the website and plug it into excel, inserting some base numbers I have for the year. I then project what I will have score wise in a number of years by averaging my point gain for a few years, and adding that recursively. Granted, its fairly rough, since there are obvious instances of point influx (lots of cities hitting size 3) and slowdowns (lots of cities hitting 8/12 without the proper improvements), but it allows me to estimate what year I expect to be approaching a maximum so I know when to start getting rid of my settlers and stop building improvements, which wouldn't be worth building so close to the end of the game (unless they provide luxuries to a city that wouldn't be max happiness at 100% luxury).

Since it was brought to my attention that I never finished posting my log...

- - - In 250 years, only 11 cities were added and four of those were from conquest. We have met 4 new civilizations and one city was plucked from each of the Spanish, Mongols, Japanese, and Vikings. We were getting so many cities that the riot factor was starting to make even size 3 cities unhappy, so significant effort was focused on building Michaelangelo's Chapel rather than new cities. now that it is done, it will allow us to expand some more before riots affect our little cities again.

- - - In this 250 year period, much has changed. The vikings have been destroyed and their former capital has been liberated from Japanese hands. The mongols have been destroyed, allowing unfettered expansion on their continent. We have Embassies with both Japan and Spain so we know there is only one Japanese city left, while Spain has one city still undiscovered (although we have a good idea of where it might be). We have met our final adversary, the Celts, but know little of their empire. In our ongoing fight against the riot factor, we have finally added the Hanging Gardens (This also proved useful in celebrating our size 4 cities for more trade before caravan deliveries). Perhaps most importantly, we have established a ship chain to Madrid for regular hides deliveries.

- - - 100 years have passed and the end is near. Japan has been vanquished. Spain is down to only having Madrid, which is kept alive simply for its hides demand, and the faint hope that it might complete the wonder it has been attempting to build for centuries. After sailing the wrong way around their island, we have finally found the core of the Celtic civilization and are in position to strike the capital next turn.

- - - I made one decision that was probably a mistake - in order to improve the ship chain and speed the search for the Celts, I pushed for navigation to build Magellan's Expedition and was then going to push for Leo's to upgrade all my tririemes. However, I forgot that Navigation cuts delivery bonuses in half, so my research toward invention was slower than I had hoped - decreasing the benefits of the faster ship chain. Oh well. It didn't hurt that badly.

- - - (89g plundered. Celtic civilization destroyed)

- - - Hit enter to End Turn

- - - Once the Celt captial fell, it was just a matter of finding their last cities and getting diplomats out to bribe them. While this was happening, the final few turns were devoted to sending the last wave of settlers to any place they could to found cities. A few cities rushed a final wave of caravans to build some completely unnecessary, score-padding wonders, and cities were made as happy as they could be by working trade squares and cranking up luxuries (augmented by monarchy celebrations in the handful of cities above size 2).

- - - Not one improvement was built. A few were even sold when captured.

- - - Side note that may only interest me…I never managed to circumnavigate the globe. There is a fairly significant band stretching pole-to-pole between Spain and the Celts that I never explored.
