Let's hear your final thoughts and round-up on this game. Anything you didn't put in the previous spoilers goes in here.

The qualification to read and post in this thread is that you must have submitted your game, or have decided not to submit it.

Hi 2 all! Since the thread is still empty, i think it's safe to post the situation here, and sorry if it's somewhat off-topic.

I'm stuck at 410AD. The power supply of my PC is fried. A replacement unit will be installed tonight, but i still don't know if there are other components damaged or not - i presume i'll discover it when i'll try to power up the damn thing... In the worst case, i won't have the necessary money to buy other parts ASAP, and so i'm at risk of giving up the challenge. I sincerely hope it won't happen, it would be a shame.

410AD and you still haven't reached domination

With his expansion nearly complete, Abu began to focus on research and culture. With the discovery of Steam Power in 1020 AD, the Golden Age of the Arabs ended. As more universities completed, the Arab research pace quickened and the discovery of Electricity and Replaceable Parts would provide Abu with a significant border defense that would secure his nation for as long as needed. In 1070 AD Najran completed Shakespeare’s theater and cascaded the Ottoman to Magellan’s, Abu also acquired Economics from the Koreans and began building Smith’s Trading Post (this would later prove to be costly). In 1400 AD Elizabeth of England paid the ultimate price for her earlier treachery as Germany captured her final city. This year also marked the Arab’s reaching the 25K plateau in culture and would mark the first large gold (300gpt) deal with the Ottoman (for electricity).

Abu continued to increase his research pace thanks in part to Newton’s University in Baghdad. The discovery of Industrialization was followed quickly by Scientific Method and the Corporation. In 1270 AD Abu got an unpleasant surprise as the completion of Smith’s Trading Post in Carthage cascaded to the Theory of Evolution in Sogut, with Osman selecting Sanitation and Refining. Abu was left with a very unsatisfying Military Academy in Mecca and a palace pre-build for Hoover in Anjar. After discovering Steel in 1290 AD and finding Osman unwilling to trade refining, Abu sent orders to his embassy to procure the technology quietly and safely and soon the knowledge revealed local oil reserves. In 1305 AD the culture count stood about 40,000. The miss on the Theory of Evolution would mean that Abu would need to research Atomic Theory (1325 AD) and Electronics (1355 AD) manually, so he did and quickly turned the first technology into Nationalism & Espionage and used the second to complete the Hoover Dam in Anjar. With the discovery of the Radio in 1390 AD, Abu once again sold technology to the Ottoman for a large amount of gold (720g + 410gpt). This time however, Osman turned traitor and attacked which activated newly signed Mutual Protection Pacts with the Persian, Zulu and Iroquois nations. Soon the rest of the world was aligned against the Ottomans and Abu could breathe easy as Russia and the Iroquois bore the brunt of what little offense the Ottomans had. The lack of saltpeter & horses severely handicapped Osman at this time. Another trio of small wonders (Wall Street & Intelligence Agency in Mecca and Battlefield Medicine in Anjar) soon came on line and in 1450 AD the Arabs surpassed the 63K mark in culture. With the discovery of Combustion (1440 AD), Mass Production (1460 AD), Motorized Transportation (1485 AD) and Flight (1515 AD), the Arabs were the first to enter the Modern Era. At 1500 AD for the first time they also surpassed the 1,000 culture per turn limit and reached 72,000 culture points. By now three embedded foreign cities had revolted and joined the Arab Republic. Soon two more would join the Arabs and in 1540 AD 80K culture was reached. With the discovery Computers (1555 AD) and Miniaturization (1600 AD) and the completion of the Internet in Anjar at the 94,000 culture point level with 1323cpt and Abu’s stay on the planet was coming to an end. Since it was available Mecca completed the SETI Program in 1605 AD. In 1625 AD the Arab nation reached 100,000 culture points and Abu was wished well on his return trip to Alpha Centauri by millions of cheering fans.

[Editor’s Note: 100K Culture Victory in 1625 AD in 36 hours 38 minutes – Firaxis score 4874 – Jason Score 6013]

With Friends Like These...
Tenochtitlan beats us to Copernicus in 1090, so Mecca switches to Newton. In 1110 I trade magnets to Persia for demo+827. Persians pick up steam as their bonus, which is what we're researching. We pick up steam ourselves in 1130. We gift Turkey into the IA and they get med. We have to trade them steam, demo, 250+3gpt+iron to get it. Meanwhile the Quois, who had been slogging thru my lands to kill Germans, finally make it to the German border only to make peace and head all the way back home again. At least we have coal tho. Next turn Mecca finishes Newton and we buy econ from Carthage for incense, 150+5gpt and Medina switches to it. Manpo flips to us in 1200 and after that we learn industry which we sell to Turkey and Persia for a net 479+335/turn.

It's Good to Be the Tech Leader
Medina finishes Smith in 1260 and we decide to pick a fight with England, taking Brighton and Dacca with cavs. Ibabanago falls in 1270 and we take slaves. Zulus are down to their capital and session 9 ends here. Since we can't get to Zimbabwe easily, I make peace in 1290, getting Free Art at a discount. In 1300 I learn sci meth and start corporate. Trade electric to Persia and Carthage for net 345+100gpt+gems, also getting nationalism. Mecca switches to Darwin and Medina to Shakes.
I also have a round of drafting in my larger cities. Sogut builds Shakes in 1315, switch to Suffrage. We learn corporate in 1330. We start running a deficit, so we maintain cashflow by trading it to Carthage for 150+105gpt+2 slaves. Trade it to Persia for 87+60gpt, and also trade electric to Aztecs for 60+23gpt.

Voted Off the Island
In 1340 I send 2 galleons of troops toward Russia to get it on the carving up. Next turn I trade medicine to Germany for spice+11. I also slow Darwin down so replaceables will finish in time. Ngome flips to us in 1355 and the following turn sees the Zulu exterminated by Carthage. We build Oman as we declare war on Russia and land cav. In 1370 we learn replaceables just in time for Darwin to give us atomics and electronics. Medina switches to Hoover. We have rubber near Niagara Falls, but see Mpondo, which England has taken, has 2 rubbers! Trade sci meth to Persia for commie+ over 400+18gpt. Russian muskets defend well and take out our first wave, but the second wave takes Minsk in 1385. We build Dubai on gold hill n of Oka. Next turn we finish Hoover while we destroy Yakutsk, wiping out Russia. Some trade deals take me to 1400 where session 10 ends.

Black Gold, Texas Tea
Mecca starts Wall Street in 1405. The following turn we learn refining. Tripoli is built to pressure Mpondo and Taejon. No oil! One is just inside Aztec borders. Another one is by Minsk, have to get workers and a harbor up there, and Dubai can get some upon expansion. Trade Korea sci meth for espionage, Damascus starting the Agency in 1415. Carthage has taken so much Zulu land that they are now the #2 power in the world.
Damascus switches to cathedral in 1425, since Medina can build it faster. England sent a bunch of troops thru my lands to attack the Quois, activating an MPP the Quois had with Persia. Trade deals run out, so I trade Persia, Korea, and Carthage atomics for net 550+561gpt.

World War Begins
In 1435, the Quois kill lotsa English as Mecca finishes Wall Street. Dubai expands and we declare war on England again, taking Reading and Norwich. Sidon flips to us next turn as we learn steel. Persia takes Mpondo in 1445 after we do most of the work. I sell Germany communism to keep their spice flowing. Next turn Korea declares on us and burns down Umtata. We retaliate by burning down Taejon, triggering an MPP they had with Aztecs. We bribe the Iroquois to fight them for furs. Umtata is rebuilt. In 1455 Persia allies with Aztecs. I make peace with England, getting England to fight Korea for us. I bribe Carthage to fight Persia for refining, getting 66+200gpt. I also sell the Ottomans electricity to help out against the Aztecs. Next turn, the Persians burn down Muscat. In 1465, Muscat is rebuilt as my cavs kill several Persian longbows. Session 11 ends here.

The Price of Leadership
We take Mpondo in 1470. Next turn, Merw barely holds off an attack from the Aztecs. We reinforce and set up outside Tzintzuntzen. In 1480 Persian artillery starts bombarding our fur outside Tarsus, bringing out the hippies. We trade the Iroquois coal for silks+gold to keep them quiet. Tzintzuntzen falls in 1490 and next turn I finally get a leader. He is rushed to Damascus to build Battle Med. Also, we have learned combustion and start flight. In 1500 Ottomans make a separate peace. I trade sanitation to Carthage for gold+gems, and get a 2nd leader! This one forms a cav army of my superleets. Carthage makes a separate peace in 1505 and I don't trust them at all. I make peace with Persia next turn, getting 13gpt in tribute. I sell Carthage electronics for 1850+255gpt, at least I'll take his money if he's up to something. Our army scores a win, enabling Epic in Mecca and Academy in Najran, and ending session 12.

War Ensemble
Tlacopan falls in 1525 and Tlalmanalco in 1530 as Mecca finishes the epic. Next turn England makes peace with Korea and turns on us. I'm not worried tho, as I've built forts on the chokepoints connecting to England and Korea. We learn flight at this time, start mass pro. We make peace w/Korea as the army takes Cempoala. In 1545 we keep German spice flowing by giving them sci meth and sanitation. We also get our 3rd leader upon capturing Tula. This one I'll hold for the UN. Next turn we take Huexotla as we agree to MPP with Quois. This was fairly stupid as it is immediately put to use as Persia attacks the Quois. Persia burns down Taif and takes Muscat. We bribe Carthage in again with coal for 70gjpt. Next turn Najran finishes the Academy and starts building an army. Mass pro finishes in 1565 and we start motors. We take back Muscat, ending session 13.

Tanks a Lot
By this time, I have a stack of about 20 artillery, and they are doing a number on Persian infantry. Then I have about 10 bombers come and finish them off. Rebuild Taif in 1575, and trade Iroquois combustion for silk+243+150gpt. Persians get caught planting a spy, so I try planting one in Persia. That fails, but the one in Azteca succeeds. India declares on the Quois for God knows what reason. I can't let them get near the Quois, as India is friendly and I will need them for the UN vote. We found Algiers and capture Susa in 1585. We learn motors the following turn and start radio--yet another reason I prefer C3C to PTW. We take Bactra in 1595, ending session 14. We have to trade Carthage oil to keep their gems coming. Despite taking Arbela in 1600, the peaceniks keep wanting an end to the war. Artillery begin the assault on Persepolis as I form my tank army. Interestingly, they sent a guerilla army against my tank army and managed to redline it before dying. In 2 turns of bombing, Persepolis has gone from size 12 to size 2. I get my tank army out of harm's way and take Persepolis in 1610, getting Suffrage.

Friends and Foes
In 1620 we flip Sverdlovsk and conquer Ixtapaluca. Dariush Kabir is taken next turn. In 1630 India wastes their elephants against Persian infantry. Ergili is taken and at last my southern outposts are united with the rest of the country. The cav army dies vs. an infantry in Chalco, but no worries. Kuwait is built to fill in a gap in the former Persian lands. We learn radio in 1635 and start fission. We sell electronics around for gold. We look ahead to the UN. Turkey and India like us. Germany will like us once we bribe them into an alliance. Carthage is our rival. If we destroy one more rival, we'll need only 5 votes. Therefore Aztecs must die. In 1640 we take Tyre and Calixtlahuaca, ending session 15. Sell radio to Carthage next turn for 1029+150gpt and form a 2nd tank army. Tenochtitlan falls in 1650, getting Copernicus. We take Tlatelolco, wiping out the Aztecs in 1660. We bribe Germany with iron. We take Hamadan while building Isfahan, Kirkuk, and Karbala in gaps. Pasargadae falls in 1675.

The Final Piece (Peace?)
We learn fission in 1685 and put our leader to use, rushing the UN. Yes, we have uranium. The Quois don't like us anymore, and we still need another vote. Korea is the lucky winner and is awarded with flight and rubber. The UN finishes in 1690 and the vote goes as expected, except that Iroquois actually votes for Carthage. 4142 Firaxis, 5260 Jason.

Due to the Christmas holiday and family visiting I did not have much time to devote to this game and seeing that it was a large map I decided that a peaceful route would be the quickest way to play this game. Expanded until I was boxed in, never went to war and I poached cities when some land by India opened up. I used the early GA to build libraries. I also had 3 Indian cities flip to me.

I entered the IA in 640 AD during my GA and at the final war against the Iroquois, who had only 2 towns left and needed to be wiped out.
After those were taken, they still had a wandering Settler left. So on the next interturn they declared war on the Aztecs and plopped their settler down - 2 tiles away from the aztec capital! Needless to say, they didn´t last for long.

680 AD: dow Aztecs
760 AD: GA ends
770 AD: Aztecs destroyed
800 AD: I already know Steam, Replacables, Industrialisation and Electricity, so I gift the Ottomans and Persia into the IA and buy Medicine from them.
1210 AD: the ToE gives Flight and Fission
1220 AD: UN victory

Alltogether a game to my liking: peaceful for the most parts, with one early war against the Iros that gave me a second core and the Pyramids (50 AD), and a second quick war against the Aztecs for some science farm lands.

Well done Twonky. I would have preferred this method also, but I was too pushed for time for warfare.

PTW Open - 20K.

980Ad - Enter IA, completing FP in former Aztecs territory a turn before that. Gift Otto and he gets medicine! Perfect! And I can get Steam power in 6 turns.

1110AD - peace with Germany (they are boat people now) and with India as need to regroup. Researching Electricity.

1150AD - built Magellan as missed Smith by 2 turns.

1200AD we are maxed out with Factory, Coal Plant and Hospital.
5638 culture/75cpt.

1225AD - Dow Persia.
1230AD - Heroic Epic. Start ToE.
1250AD - GL! Hurry Univ.Suffrage (switch from ToE).
1255AD - we dow India at her last city as we have 3 Elite Ansar in there. And Korea dows us! Thanks guys!

1260AD - destroy India in 3 Elite attacks.

1290Ad - ToE.

1310AD - GL while eliminating Persia. Deside to keep it for UN or whatever.
1315Ad - Wall street.
1345Ad - Mil.Academy

1355AD - destroyed Iroquese and triggered war with Carthage as they had MPP with Iroquese. War is to get more Elites.

1380Ad - Battlefield Medicine.
1420AD - Destroyed Germans as they finally plopped a city. Got 1 elite promotion.

1450Ad - Modern Age.

1475AD - 10048 culture, 100cpt. It's a milestone.

1495Ad - SETI.
1505AD - Internet & Research lab (hurried).
Gift Otto but he gets computers too.
1515Ad - dow Zulu, 1st Elite fight gives a GL. and still 3 turns till Fission...
1530AD - Hurry UN.

After that fought Zulu and after eliminating them - Carthage, producing GLs every 1-2 turns and hurrying the following till 1615AD:

Manhattan
CfC
Longevity
Intelligence Agency
Apollo
Build 3rd Army so that can build Pentagon.

1615Ad - Carthage gone and 3 turns till Pentagon - the last Wonder I'm going to build. So no need for warring anymore.
I'm going to research to Synth Fibers and sell LIbs/Unis as I'm making too much culture per turn and can end up with 100K victory.

1630-90AD - Ottomans sneak-attack us. We ally England and wait couple of turns for Synth Fibers, upgrade about 60 of Tanks and kick their butt. Take all of their Uranium, Oil and Rubber sources.

After that it is just pressing Enter as Otto is now harmless and England and Russia are too backwards, and the rest are gone.

1796Ad - 20K Victory. My first official pre-19th century 20K!
Fir: 6419. Jason: 5521.

Wow, it's strange to be the first to post about their domination results this close to the deadline. Fine, I'll post first and you all can top it. 850 AD, ~9.5k Jason points. I'll add some details later.

You must've scored above 14K! lol

Just to tease tRr1cKy ;) . I got domination in 820AD, spoiler in the second thread.

Grrr. Not a great game for me- I got severely behind in techs in the middle ages. I warred on the Aztecs to get Horses and techs (missed them in the AA), but even though I captured the aztec city to the SW that was placed right next to the horses, rushed Temple on the turn after capture, and Cathedral 2 turns later, the town flipped to the first-placed and extremely powerful Iriqouis one turn later. :( Aztecs were fairly weak and behind in techs, so I didn't get much from them in a peace deal, and I re-declared 20 turns later. My only GL in the game was used to rush a palace in the SW as soon as a hand-built Forbidden Palace was built to the N towards where Germany started.

Although this was Monarch and I had a lot of productive cities, i couldn't catch up/keep up with techs. I think this was mainly due to having too many units- I was far enough behind that I was always at least one generation behind with my military (and had no horses!), so I tried to make up for quality with quanitity to deter AI aggression. This worked up to a point, and when i was near the end of the middle ages I was able to research at 4-5 turns/tech and actually buy one off the AI every 15 turns or so. When I was about 1 tech from reaching the Industrial age, Persia (#2 score-wise) broke her right-of-passage and took several cities with riflemen cavalry, including my FP city. I had left an interior town with just a spearman- i wonder if it was just this one tempting target that finally got Persia to declare or if they were going to anyway... I actually fought them off relatively well after that (finally getting Zulu to trade me some horses, so I got my golden age when I built one of the horsie things). Managed to get several other civs to declare on persia as well, including the iriqouis, england, and zulu. I did finally get a not-too-costly peace deal with Persia (after a little more than 20 turns so I didn't cheese off any of my new allies and end up in a new war), but was so far behind at this point that I decided to retire. The interturns took forever as streams of iriqouis and persians battled across my territory.

Retired 1695AD Firaxis score 1426.

On the last stretch of the game I just kept building, researching techs and conquering what I could along with a few allies. I got some sweet trade deals for my advanced techs. Culture started growing really fast toward the end.

My civilization's culture ended up going over 100k at 1900AD. It was one turn before the Germans would have been wiped off the map.

I accidentally triggered my golden age early on with a wonder (collosus I think) and as a result ended up building no ansar warriors whatsoever.

This also negated the predator disadvantage of a higher ansar cost.

I skipped chivalry altogether and just used cavalry to acheive domination around 1050 (somewhere around there.)

I think going to cavalry was a better option because I managed to rush build a lot of them and they would be far more effective vs pikemen than ansars. I didn't encounter musketmen till I had around 55% land area and only England had them at that time.

Grrrrrrrrrrrr.

I was cruising towards my 20k victory (to happen 1762ad). CivAssist II projected global cultural victory for 1792ad.

Thus I was surprised to win by 100k in 1735ad........

Similar with me but 20 turns before reaching 20k I realized by chance that I was approaching 100k faster than CivAssist had told me. That resulted in razing of several size-12-cities and selling all culture buildings everywhere (but in 20k town). :aargh: :gripe:

This internet thing is tough to control... Thanks to MapStat (and its highlighting of cities with expansion level > distance to border) I was warned before that cultural boosts it triggered twice. I guess 10 of my 65 hours of playing I spent estimating the number of tiles that would be gained by expansion :crazyeye: :suicide:

In the end it turned out to a 1680 finish with a Firaxis score of 10178 and Jason score of 8194 (never before I had a higher Firaxis than Jason). The map was great, but 20k is really taking time (if you aim for a decent Jason score). I don't think I ever will do that again, so please give the award to me :groucho:

(edits: minor spelling and grammar issues)

With just two hours to spare (in my time zone!) it has become obvious that I made one of two mistakes playing this GOTM:

1 - Downloaded and started the game too late in the month (too close to the submit by date); or

2 - Went to work every day and socialised with real people when i should have stayed up all night and finished my GOTM properly !

Oh well, had a bad start anyway, too many jumped up weak units having heroic wins over my stronger guys  , in fact later on I saw a bowman defeat an infantry (neither mine)... just imagine that scene, WWII trooper, recoiless rifle using lead core rounds just decimated by a group of guys with willow and pidgeon feathers !!!

Didn't keep up with the tech race and offensive campaigns became less and less effective as a result (after Ansars).

PS. While we are on Arabia, remind me, in earlier civ versions was there a Jihad unit ? Interesting in the current climate no?

First of all, my sincere apologies to Megalou. I issued the challenge, but could not live up to it myself. I've actually known for the past week or so that I would not have the time to go all the way to 2050 AD. With less than one week to go, still in the MA, and RL work stacking up... well, it just wasn't doable.

I was going on and off about whether or not to tell you earlier. On the one hand it would mean you could put down less time MMing the end of the game, knowing there was no real competition. On the other hand it would not give you the same satisfaction of knowing that you did your best. Hope I made the right choice ;). With the way my game turned out I'm not so sure I would have beaten you in the end, despite my better start - sadly we will never know. :(

Ok, enough of the sad parts. When I realized I couldn't go all the way, I had to do what I could with what I had. Conquest seemed all to far away, so it had to be domination. After all I had been playing the game as if I was going for domination anyway (in the spirit of Dynamic's masterful milking silver medal COTM game). There were few adjustments to make really, mostly to start playing a bit sloppier since I no longer needed care for the remainder.

After the AA I swiftly went to war. Horses vs Aztecs to secure iron. Had iron hooked up on the same turn I got Chivalry, in 110 BC. Upgraded around 30 horses to Ansars and went to war on Iroquis in 90 AD, starting the GA. I used the GA to beeline for Military Tradition, which I got in 400 AD. Meanwhile my Ansars had made short work of the whole western area - Iroquois, Ottomans and Russia (though the two first lived on as OCCs). During those wars I got two Great Leaders who were used to rush Leo's and Sun Tzu (Pyramids and Gardens were already in London and Carthage  ).

The second wave, containing newly built Cavalry and upgraded Ansars went to work on the north. Germany got hit in 460 AD, four turns later they were reduced to a boat settler. Zulu sneak attacked us, diverting my attention for a while, so it was not until 550 AD that I continued on India in earnest. In 620 AD (the late date due to the mountain wall) they shared the fate of Germany. I got a third leader during this war, who got to rush Copernicus (I had no real use for him,
The war on the Zulu was fought in the jungles, so there were little progress either way, and most my forces were occupied elsewhere. After taking four or five of their towns, Bapedi among them, I let them have peace and turned my eyes towards the north-east instead.

England had Great Wall far up towards the Korean border. No way I could fight my way through all that honestly :mischief:. RoP rape on England in 600 AD after selling them Metallurgy. In 640 AD England had joined Germany and India on the seas. Continue (using RoP) on Korea in 680 AD, in 720 AD they had only a single town on the Carthaginian peninsula. In 710 AD I brought it to Ronald and Persia, who was busy fighting the Zulu. Took most of his towns on the first turn, more on the second. During this time I also finally took out Iroquois and Aztecs.

I had perhaps half the border expansions set to happen on the IBT 720-730 AD, then more on the two turns to follow. I also rushed settlers whereever possible, disbanding cavalry to get them out of resisting towns. Turns out I didn't need most of them, domination hit me unexpectedly already in 730 AD. :)

Entry class: Predator
Game status: Domination Victory for Arabia
Game date: 730 AD
Firaxis score: 7818
Jason score: 9981
Time played: 66:08:15

The (for me) short time played was a surprise, but I used every second of it. Just shows how little time I had to play this period.
Though I'm not all that dissatisfied with the result... Hey tR1cKy, maybe I'll even win that challenge of yours! ;)
