been a fan of CIV for many a year, but have never played a CIV 3 GOTM - because the loading instructions have always confuzzled the hell out of me. I see now there is a 'Classic' GOTM now - ok, great, but I'm reading about different versions of CIV...

If I get my CIV 3 CD, install it, throw on the 1.27f patch, what else do I need to do in order to play the basic GOTMs?

Make it easy to follow... PLEASE! :)

Hi, welcome to GOTM :wavey:

'Classic' GOTM is the one we've always had, and #32 is the one just released today. As you have mentioned version 1.27 I assume you have the Play the World edition of CivIII. In that case you can play it in 1.21f or 1.27f, but 1.27f is recommended. So:

- Patch to version 1.27f
- Download the start file for the class you want to play in - conquest/open/predator
- Load the start file
- Play the game of your life
- Save the turn after the victory ceremony
- Upload your save using the submission form.
- That's it.

If you mean by your CIV3 CD the PTW expansion with patch 1.27f -> yes
If you're talking about the original civ3 disc -> no

You can play with vanilla, but modding is necessary.

I believe 1.27f does indeed mean PTW, though.

Infogrames should just give everyone with a C3 disk the latest version and make it easy on us.

As suggested above, if you have Play The World, its as easy as downloading the save file and starting the game up. If you have 'normal' Civ 3, then let us know and we can give you more detailed instructions. :)

You need to download and install some game packs that add some different
units, resources and civilizations to the game.

You can get the install packs at the following links:

GOTM 21 Full setup:
http://gotm.civfanatics.net/games/saves/gotm21_v129_full_setup.exe

GOTM22 Add-On Setup:
http://gotm.civfanatics.net/games/saves/gotm22_v129_add_on_setup.exe

GOTM23 Add-on Setup:
http://gotm.civfanatics.net/games/saves/gotm23_v129_add_on_setup.exe

GOTM24 Add-On Setup:
http://gotm.civfanatics.net/games/saves/gotm24_v129_add_on_setup.exe

GOTM 25 Add-On Setup:
http://gotm.civfanatics.net/games/saves/gotm25_v129_add_on_setup.exe

All you need to do is download these, and then install them in the order
that you download them. The key point is to make sure that when the
installer asks where you want to install to, that you make sure that it
installs to the directory where you installed Civ to in the first place.

You will also find that when you try to play 'normal' games, the resources
pictures will be all messed-up. This is because the GOTM installs a
different resources picture. Unfortunately, this means that when you want
to play a normal game, you need to swap yuor resources.pcx file.

The GOTM install package actually provides a readme file on how to do this
(its fairly simple), but if you have any problems with either the
installation of these files, changing the resources.pcx files or any error
messages playing the game of the month, then please don't hesitate to e-
mail or send a PM to myself or one of the GOTM staff. :)

You will also need a new pediaicons.txt file, which you can download from this post

Ooh thanks. Will do when I've got time :) Hope this helps any other confused GOTM-virgins out there as well...

Back to smiting the Germans and Egyptians for me now :)
It does help. I was just looking for something like this thread!

Hi folks, first time GOTM player here as well. I use "vanilla" Civ3 - patched to lates (V1.29). I downloaded the updates mentioned above (GOTM 21,22, etc.) - Now I'm able to play but my resources appear messed up - not on "normal" games but during the GOTM (Greece).

Questions:

I was asked a question during install - "Plain resource icons, icons with power bars, or some other stuff - I chose plain - did I err?

My new pedaicons.txt file is in the /saves folder where it went when I unzipped. Was I supposed to copy it somewhere or rename something to use it?

Thanks in advance for your help. My first game at that difficulty - whoo boy, that AI expands fast...

Thanks,

Duncan

Welcome! :wavey:

The GOTM installers install the older custom resources. The recent games have reverted to the standard out-of-the-box resources. So go to \art\resources storage and look at the readme there. That should explain how to revert.

Is it really necessary for the custom mods to be so invasive?

AFAIK, it would entirely possible to just make it as a scenario and then specify your own custom paths for art and all the rest. That way nothing would be overwritten and people could still play the original Civ3 without having to juggle around with modded versions...

Sorry, for going a little off-topic :mischief:.

We do exactly that for the Play The World version. Unfortunately, a lot of people play vanilla civ (and for Mac users, its the oly option). Vanilla civ doesn't support scenarios very well at all, so unfortunately the add-ons are more 'invasive' than we want them to be. :(

I see. I never dug deep into the editor until I was already playing Conquests so I wasn't aware that it had improved in that direction (a huge leap forward, IMHO).

It still sucks, but at least it's not your fault it has to be like that, hehe .

I found the /art/resources storage folder and went in to find my read.me

Alas, nothing there but 4 folders: GOTM21 plain, GOTM21 with smiles and blips, GOTM21 before, and GOTM21 with blips.

Or is the read.me here in the forums, somewhere...?

Thanks,

Duncan

Sorry you couldn't find them ... I thought they were there :hmm: Anyway, Ainwood recently published the readme contents here
