Hi everyone! The GOTM page is updated again, and I think this is a long lasting version.

Please don't use submission form yet. I'll tell you when you can. After that, the people who have submitted their games before (for the GOTM #2) may do this again, unless they don't have their games anymore...

Also the rules have been changed: the importance of the finishing date has nearly doubled. It appears after all that the normal score was too important. I will give you the new results (of GOTM #1) at the end of the week. A big thank you to Stormerne for helping in getting this (undoubtedly) well working scoring system!

But guys, how does it look?

You continue to astound and amaze us, Matrix

Thanks, too, to Stormerne for your help. This is such a great feature, and you guys are implementing it so well. Keep up the GREAT work

I think that it looks totally cool, and I'm looking very much forward to seeing the results!!!

I think I should enroll in some chemistry courses

I'll take that as a compliment Smash

, but this (and statistics) is just a hobby of mine.

But actually I wanted to say that I've recently bought a new motherboard, processor and memory, but I haven't made it working yet, which means I can't update the scores yet. I've even almost destoyed my motherboard (made a short-circuit) and processor (forgot to put the cooler/fan on it)
rolleyes.gif
. I hope to get it fixed before this weekend.

Anyway, just bear in mind that the GOTM score is more dependent of the finishing date than last month. Most important change is that the winner isn't shadowdale anymore, but Smash. I'm sorry shad.

; congrats to Smash

Oh I think this revised scoring system is going to work out well
wink.gif

Argh!!!! Damn damn !!!
Why did you change the scoring system????
Oh well last month I played to get the highest score and not the best GotM rating, mostly because it didn't exist at that time. But I have learned from my mistakes and I shall do better this month!!!
I curse you to hell you backstabbing thieves!!!
lol.gif
spinsmile.gif
Had I known last month, then I would surly have won that too!!!

No seriously - why did you change the scoring system?? And why from four to SEVEN???? It seems a bit much to me.....

With the 4, people who built an enormous empire and played on till 2020 won. That was exactly what I wanted to prevend. Now, it's equally devided between people who played on a long time and had a big empire, and people who finished earlier with a less impressive empire.

Johan ended very soon, but didn't bother about his hinterland/having a large empire. That too worked against him. And Smash did well. He's our big example. That is: when I have made the new rankings...

P.S.: you would've won if you finished earlier. But this is why this first GOTM is a beta test case.

DOH!!!!!

This is what I get for not paying attention

I have been happily taking my time to boost a score - not realizing the increased effect of finishing sooner.

The one good thing is that I am only at about 1883 or so. I had my ship ready several decades ago but was holding for a good score. Better launch that bad boy ASAP!!

Please refresh: How many total turns on King level?

Another question: Would it be better to land a ship or conquer the final city? It's been a while since I won by conquest and I am not sure what sort of score bonus may be involved. It would take 11.7 years to land the ship, and those lost years can have an effect on the score considering the multiplier (though my civ is still growing at a decent rate).

King level has 520 turns; Emperor 420.

I don't know exactly what the bonus is for finishing by conquest, but for the spaceship it's viewable in the score screen (F9). It's 100, 200, 300 or 400, depending on the number of people on the ship.

And it is my fault that you haven't seen this earlier: I should've posted a news message earlier.

The reassessment of the GOTM scaling factor came from a mixture of observation and judgement. We noted that in many circumstances, able players who ventured on victory by world conquest would reach their goal after about two-thirds of the game's turns. In a competitive situation where points mattered, they would then have one-third of the turns to perfect and grow.

It was also noted that the methods of perfecting and growing were fairly straightforward. These involved settling any remaining city site unchallenged, developing terrain, and winding up the luxuries under democracy. We didn't think that these well-known techniques were the measure of a good player, especially when it is easily possible to multiply your score by three, four or five via these endgame techniques. We also noted that these techniques were time-consuming and, to many people, boring.

The GOTM bonus for early finishing takes care of this, but the old scaling factor of 4 still gave a 100% bonus for this part of the game if a player achieved conquest in two-thirds of the game turns and then when on to quintuple their points in the endgame. We thought a maximum of a 50% bonus for good endgame play was more desirable and that's how we arrived at the scaling factor of 7.

I don't think that we shall see anyone who plays all the way to 2020 in GotM2 because of the change in points, and that isn't the development that we are looking for!!! The winners are probably going to be someone who finishes the game by either conquest or spaceship in 1500-1850. That way they can get a high score and get a really big GotM score!!!

That's correct. And to be honest, that is the development we were looking for, because as Stormerne said: getting a high score while you actually already won the game shouldn't be awarded. Ending sooner than someone else did is.

But don't worry, shadowdale! If you play as you have always done, only just capture the last city when you can and don't wait for it, than you'll still be very good, if not the best. As I said: if you would've ended when you could (remember you gave me that barbarians savegame: fun-fun.sav?), then you would've won.

Well Matrix, that was before there even was a GotM score system. Had I known then I would have played the game differently!!!

But you are welcome to use that savegame instead of the other one!!!

Well it's nearly the end of the month Matrix. And I'm not far off finishing my game. When will we be able to use the submission form?

I am afraid not... The submission form didn't work out very well; some people forgot to upload their saved games; some people also played with the submisison form and as a result we are receiving lots of "test" emails.
smile.gif

You need to email your saved game and your game info to matrix.

matrix said he has an exam coming up.
