While reading the main GOTM XI spoiler thread, my curiosity was stimulated by the different stories I found of the evolution of the second main continent -the one shared by Caesar, Xerxes and Otto.

In my game, Caesar and Xerxes ended up sharing the island -more or less half each- with Otto basicly relegated to his starting position.
Casar ended up conquering the smaller island to the north (before I stepped in, that is).

Looking at the replay, I saw an endless struggle between Rome and Persia for the control of that island, which had stabilized by the time I joined the party.
Considering the kind of civs and the horrible starting position of Otto, that seemed to me the most natural outcome and I expected to find it more often than others in the spoiler thread.

But even browsing the thread, it looks like that is not the case -which prompted me to wonder what happened in everybody's experience.

So, the basic question is: what happened to the civs on other island when they were all alone?

I've nearly completed my GOTM as a typical Conquest/Domination type game. I've gone back and experimented with a OCC type of game, and tried several different strategies (peaceful cultural play, early war, middle-ages war, ...). The interesting thing is that the events on the other island have varied considerably. In the game I'm finishing out for submittal, Xerxes dominates the island, Otto is wiped out and Rome has 4 cities left with an uneasy peace. In one of my OCC games, Otto got the upper hand (he must have played Ceasar and Xerxes off each other). And in another, Rome dominated.

It's hard to imagine that events on Japan's island might impact events on the 2nd island. By the time mapmaking is around, the pecking order on the 2nd island should already be established. So the random decisions of Otto, Caesar and Xerxes have a tremendous effect on their eventual status.

In my game the Germany wiped out Persia very early (~2000BC).
Further Romans and Germany by turns erase cities on the border. In the last BC Germany has 3/5 of their island.

Funny poll! ;) With me the Romans destroyed the Persians first and then the Germans.

After that they were just as big as China and France was a bit smaller. I have never been of any importance in this game.

In my game the other island was the "island of peace" as opposed to the island we were on that had continuous warfare on it, not in the least due to Japanese aggression. ;)

The island was basically divided between Persia and Rome, with the Germans only managing to get 3 cities build in the north.
As far as I know there was no war (my advisor wasn't babbling about treachery against our "friends") and they also didn't get a single wonder build until late in the game.

On my game, Roman and and German split the island equally in half. Persians?? There were certainly wiped off very early!

In my game, Xerxes was already dominating the other island, while I was still in war with the French on my island.

So Xerxes was to big for me, the reason why I lost this GOTM :o

But I got my hopes on GOTM 12 ;)

I voted Caesar and Xerxes shared the island, Otto entirely or almost wiped out. However, Caesar clearly had more then Xerxes

I lost my game, was running pretty even with Xeres the whole time in a bid for second but both of us were way behind the French. My undoing was trying to launch an attack on France... I waited too long and Xeres made peace with France before I could join the fight... that and France went from Musketmen to Riflemen in between turns without me realizing it! :suicide:]

The other island was interesting... Otto only got three cities built and he only held two far into the game. One on the main island and one on the contested island. Rome and Persia kind of shared the island until a major war broke out between the AIs... Persia took on France and Rome decided to side with France. Unfortunately for Rome Persia decided to concentrate on them and wiped them off the face of the planet :)

In my game, the Romans must have had some early bad luck (or stupidity). By watching the replay, I saw that the Romans had founded a total of 3 cities by the time Xerxes and the Germans had 5 each. Then one Roman city was destroyed, though I don't know by whom. For the rest of the game, they didn't found any other city, except for one on the south island. They lost every city but that one in the early Medieval period to Persia.

Germany had settled a narrow strip between Rome and Persia, but all of their cities except two on their original peninsula fell to persian immortals. Those two lasted till I had tanks, then Persia finished them off.

However, it was France who would have won if I hadn't been around. They owned about half my continent, and settled almost all of the northern island very early. They had a tech lead, a huge culture lead, and every ancient and medieval wonder except the great wall and great Library. Good thing even their musketeers couldn't stand up to my Samurai.

Wow. I had two seven-hour long meetings in the last two days -not a chance to get back to posting anything... :aargh3:

So it seems Xerxes got the upper hand most of the times, with Rome up to the challenge most of the times.

It is surprising, though, that Otto managed to wipe some opponents in a few games. Must have been a lucky early rush, maybe decided by the outcome of a single battle...
Even more surprising, the peaceful coexistence of the three.

To think about it, just how many widely different histories are generated starting from the same initial conditions...

Well, that's why we never stop playing Civ

By the time I acquired the World Map, Xerxes had already been kicked out of Persepolis and recaptured it.

Later in the game, Bismark became my guest and spent his retirement years on the very eastern edge of the Eastern Lands Across the Sea.

Caesar dominated his half of the world -- until I contained his aggression by taking his Oil.
