I am surprised no one else has started a spoiler yet. I know some of you guys are much further into the game than I am.

I was hoping to play OCC this month to save on real time. But there were no decent spots for an OCC so I decided to go for a normal game.

I typically play peaceful and shoot for the stars, but this game took a life of its own when I got an advanced tribe on what turned out to be the Indian Island. Before I knew it I was at war with Indians and then Romans.

I am playing a war game now. I am still undecided as how to end. I have two scenarios in mind. One is obviously conquest of all rivals, the other is to destroy Romans, contain Indians (they are my key civ, their destruction will be very costly), keep peace with Aztecs and Americans while building a big empire and shooting for a space victory.

I am surprised no one else has started a spoiler yet. I know some of you guys are much further into the game than I am.

Yes, I'm in the early AD years and may finish soon. I got distracted by the holidays, and by playing the game.

I like this kind of description - easier to read than most logs. Stats are also good. I'll provide both, especially economic stats around AD 1, so Hexer or other traders can compare.

I started off playing for the usual ICS + early conquest, but wanted a slightly different and longer game. I decided to build up the biggest possible AD 1 economy [see the main thread] that I could. Roughly, I wanted to steadily earn + spend about 500g per turn by then.

Results .... That's about what happened. I probably could've done a little better by focusing entirely on this goal, omitting all conquest expenses and maybe some ICS-ing. But this is not 100% clear - resources invested in elephants came back in the form of tribute and conquered cities ... maybe as good a return as vans ? Also, in hindsight, my strategy for this game was not really very different from many other games I've played, so much as I expected. It was fun, though.

4000BC: Hut = 50g, then move to river

3900BC: Carthage (1), @ alph, @ size 1 trick

3550BC: rushbuy

3450BC: Hut = Arc, Utica (2), alph -> CB.

3400BC: Hut = Barb Ho, dies vs my Arc.

3050BC: Malaca (3) [will omit next routine ICS-ing notes]

2750BC: Hut = nomads ! Science to 60% for early monarchy

2050BC: Monarchy (oedo year) ->Trade

2000BC: stats ... 8 cities, 2S,1w,1ho,6adv. Expect trade, MPE in 10 turns, then build flotillas, HG, LH etc. There is a gap in my notes to 1300BC, but I can probably find some data or saves if anyone wants that.

1300BC: MPE and get Mapmaking, Pottery, HBR, Wri [and Mas, Mys soon].

1000BC: Poly -> Lit. HG [Next turn?], can omit/delay LH.

stats .... 15 cities, 2S,5w,4misc,2tri, no losses... 12adv, monarchy. 1 outpost near the Romans.

875BC: 5 boats, 2 outposts, 50g tribute from Az's, 0 from Rome

850BC: Ele defeats city of Rome.

825BC: Agree to a [free] cease fire with the Romans, until I can defend my northern outpost from them, one near the Aztecs. They declare war a few turns later, but then pay for peace ... etc ... (it all goes well).

600BC: lit -> mys. I'm rich !! .... barb leader = 150g, +150g for cf with Az's, +150 for US peace [next turn]. 22 cities.

525BC: Pyr's.

475BC: First van = 224g, Carthage to NY.

450BC: phil -> repu -> mono

425BC: Sneak attack vs Aztecs, because stalled there. I prefer a shiny rep, but it is not necessary, especially with restarts off [less need for AI maps].

325BC: Van #2 = 368g [Carthage is approx size 5]

300BC: Colossus in Utica (my HG city, which produces hides. I'll groom it to be my STC). Van3 = 416g.

275BC: Mono -> Seaf. India goes down to ele's, dips...(after some help from barbs). Aztec capital builds walls, and is on a river. I was almost ready to attack, but slows my Az-conquest a LOT. I'll pause to make 3 diplomats, to take down the walls.

225BC: Republic. Can expect approx 400g per turn from vans from now on.

150BC: Romans down.

125BC: Mikes, which helps my cities celebrate + grow. Utica (STC) is now size 6, and producing one Hides van per turn, each destined for New York. I'm building up a ship chain for these super-vans (not so easy with triremes + Republic). Also, some roads towards the US to support lesser van traffic. At peace with US. Aztecs down.

100BC: Bridge Building. I only mention this tech because it helps a little with trade bonuses. Also, seafaring helps for the harbors, but engineering, iron working, math etc are pretty useless for my game plan.

AD 1: Stats + remarks: 54 cities, 23 vans, 16 S, 16 harbors. 5? WoWs. I didn't record all the trade bonuses, but IIRC:

Typical turn = 2 trade bonuses = approx 900g = 1 advance. The bonuses from Utica were maximal (eg 2/3 science costs).

AD 40: NY builds GL. Univ -> Sani (allows Utica more growth, but this is not really crucial, and Utica loses its Hides supply this turn anyway).

AD 60: LH; not really needed, but this may improve my ship chain effectiveness a little and eliminate any stupid trireme errors.

AD 60 thru 160: Trade increases. My Civ2 score is increasing approx 5% per turn from building more cities and harbors (35) for growth. I am now forced to research a bad tech [Feudalism, Invention or Navigation], so I set science at zero.
Bonuses per turn total approx 2000g and I have approx 50 vans in motion, mostly to and from the US.

I will probably play a few more turns just for fun and maybe build some more WoWs, and will then conquer the US. I don't see any fast way to increase my economy further without passing thru the swamp of Invention, Navigation, Democracy, etc.

Note to Magic G + EC players: If I had gone for EC, with the same starting strategy, I probably would have finished by about 100 BC. I had 4 ele's waiting in the US [eg the last AI survivors] at that time, but hadn't positioned them very well. Of course, I had spent some resources on Colossus + vans + ship chain, which could have gone into conquest. Without that, maybe I could've finished by 300BC or so, not sure.

Grigor was good at "lean EC" on this kind of map - wish he was still playing to see what he could do with this GOTM. Maybe 500BC ??

I wish I were playing too. The lack of Mac support has left me an eternal lurker. Maybe 2010 will be kinder.

Grigor was good at "lean EC" on this kind of map - wish he was still playing to see what he could do with this GOTM. Maybe 500BC ??

425BC was already done

I had no chance to play a turn over Christmas. Still stuck at 3000 BC. Probably I will wipe out the romans but beside this I'm planning to play a peace-game.

I went for early conquest, but tried to play too quickly and ruined the attack against the greeks and americans, didn't spot they had another city. After finding the cities I built as many wonders as I could to try and increase my score.

stats at 875bc (nearest save to 1000bc)
13 cities - Monarchy
1 settler 1 horse 5 ellies 3 triremes
at war with romans & captured Veii
11 techs researching currency

stats at 1ad
23 cities - Monarchy
2 phalanx 11 ellies 7 triremes 2 vans
aztecs have 2 cities left, other civs destroyed
20 techs researching astro
5 wonders (pyramids-captured from americans, HG, lighthouse, Oracle & Marco's)

I have played till 800s now. Things have gone pretty much according to plan. Indians are down to one city. Romans are wiped out. Right about when I was trying to decide what to do with Americans and Aztecs, with both of whom I had good relations, Americans stole a tech and gave the perfect excuse to attack them. They were conquered quite easily.

Now I have to make a decision and choose from one of three final plans:
1. Switch to Democracy. Keep peace with Aztecs and Indians. Land.
2. Stay in Monarchy. Destroy Aztecs and finally Indians.
3. Start a war with Aztecs. Switch to Democracy to expand while destroying Aztecs.

I found some notes of my Early Conquest Game.

-2450 Mona
-1600 MPE
-775 Romans
-750 Actecs
-575 Indians
-425 Americans

I used the usual strategy here. As long as you get out you first wave somewhere around -1000 even non-vet Elis and Chariots are enough to secure the win. There will always be one or two civs without Bronze Working at this time.
Romans were quite easy, 3 cities no Bronze Working.
Same with Actecs. My troops found a tribe so I decided to transport them back to the indians except one tireme. The new city + small force + hut-units overwhelmed the warrior-heavy yellow civ.
Can't really remember what happened with the Indians. I was able to capture an empty city very early in the game and stopped focussing on them.
The Americans were tough though. They grew up to 5 cities at the end and had at least 5-6 chariots/horesmen ;)

Grigor's post was a shock! :eek2: Glad to see you are still with us, G. Hope you can resolve those Mac/PC issues soon. :badcomp:

Nice game, Hexer! Chariots are a good idea and your 425BC finish is probably about the best possible date. You should get the green star for this game.

Also, you got off to a very fast start. Do you have any notes or memories of your game up to 1600BC ? For example, did you have good luck with huts, or use any special strategy to get monarchy and MPE quickly ?

First hut was a horsemen. I found at least one tribe in the first 1000 years. No techs from hut. I tried to rushbuild as many settlers as possible as soon as cities reach size 2. Mona is my first goal every game I start (5th tech then). I guess the rest is about micro. Changing Workers in the cities from production to arrow tiles all the time.
After mona I went for trade. 4 cities with an production around 30-40 rushbuilt caravans to build MPE asap. With techtrading Poly was no problem in the next couple of turns. Switched to 70% tax and stoped expanding when 12 cities are build for a nice early wave (4 tiremes 8 units). Sent 2 tiremes to the romans and the other 2 to the north. Had no problems (warriors). Second wave with already conquered cities on the continent finished americans/indians.

This is my "risky" EC strategy (normals/small maps with 3-4 AIs). You can't really get any faster if it works. The problem is if the first wave fails you totally miss the timing window catching the AI off guard and 12 cities won't be enough to hold the pressure. I guess thats what happened to CharlieChuck and nearly would have happend to me against the americans this gotm.

Sorry for doublepost.
I just reviewed my saves. I found a tribe in the hut on the eastern end of the river and a nomad in the southern forest. Had 5 cities at -3000

I don't like the luck-factor "hut". Is it possible to erase them for the next gotm?

I have just finished GOTM 105, my very first GOTM.

This was my first game of regular Civ2 (rather than ToT) for nearly 4 years.

And I made all sorts of mistakes from delaying founding a city to hit
ancient wisdom, miscalculating the revolution year, to spacing cities
within 6 squares to move non existent fantasy sorcerers about!

My assumption that the East end of the world was like the poles was sadly
rebutted when my very first trireme sank while heading North hugging it.

I have played past 1000. I switched to democracy in +860 and started a war with Aztecs just prior to that. I have been slowly fighting Aztecs while expanding. Both Aztecs and Indians are now down to 1 city each and since neither of them have a capital anymore I should be able to buy both of them out of existence.

Eco-Game at -1000 right now. As I said before I'm trying a complete different strategy as Peaster (actually the first I really learned when I started with deity 7 years ago) and stopped expanding when I was around 10 cities (I really dislike spamming cities and profit from the black citizen-bug, it's not meant to be there...).

Stats are
11 Cities (3x5 2x4 4x3 2x2)
680.000
HG+MPE
13 Techs (Philo researching, planning for Mikes as soon as possible for WLTK)
3 tiremes are ready, first wave of caras going out soon.

I just finished my game. Started well but guessed wrong with the hut popping. It gave me an extra tech I did not want at that moment. The extra tech also caused that I couldn't research monarchy for a while and got it just before 1000 BC. After Monarchy all went smoothly with minor problems with the Romans. I finished something like 220 AD if I'm correct. I will post my log when I'm on my own laptop.

Slow destruction of Aztecs (due to Democracy) took till 1200 but expansion was going so well that I kept going afterwards. I had a lot of underdeveloped cities with very few over size 8. With taxes at 60% almost all cities went into celebration. Once I achieved explosives and Leo turned all my settlers into Engineers I reduced science to zero and kept expanding and wonder building with taxes at 40% and lux at 60%. I am still making new discoveries via a single scientist, but I plan to stop when my only choice is Railroad so as not to lose the effect of Hanging Gardens.

I am past 1500 right now. There are no more unexplored islands but a few unsettled ones. and of couse part of the huge one is also unsettled. Some of my cities have maxed out though and thus my rate of expansion has slowed. I will probably keep going till I build all the remaining wonders which should be all pre industrial ones minus Darwin.

Since barbs at raging hordes, built on cities rivers for defense purposes. Trade arrows don't hurt, either.

Circa 750 B.C.: Realize that I am alone on a small, barb-infested island. Switch to nautical research (Lighthouse).

AD 1: 7 Cities, 11 Advances, Colossus
Romans, 4 Cities, 15 Advances, Pyramids
Aztecs (no contact), Hanging Gardens
Americans (no contact)
Indians (no contact)
Have discovered various small islands nearby. Plan to use Lighthouse production for Mike's.

AD 100: Steal tech from Antium (coastal), then purchase it, depleting my treasury. Hopefully this will not cause me any issues with Wonder production.

Circa AD 500: Capture Veii; Witness barbarian attacking Indian unit on northern island; Discover Monotheism, switch holdover Colossus production to Mike's;

AD 640: Capture Rome (Pyramids);

AD 720: 1st contact with Americans WSW of Rome

AD 820: 1st contact with Indians at Calcutta; establish embassy; Begin second production of Mike's in Malaca to switch to Sun Tzu later

For an Emperor-level game, the AI seems weak and unprepared.

Review: In hindsight, I once again am not happy with my outcome in this game. Typically, I switch to Republic and then Democracy as the techs are discovered. In this game, I wanted to stay at war, so I did not change governments to eliminate interference from the Senate. However, I continually suffered disorder and corruption issues because of my apprehension. Also, I did not take full advantage of the shield-poor terrain. The AI's production was poor in general since it does not "engineer" its cities to maximize production -- the AI just uses the terrain it is given. I gave the AI too much credit at Emperor level, which I had not played in awhile. Switching to Republic, then Democracy, and not waiting until the game was nearly over to gain some score points would have been a better strategy. Lesson learned: Play your game and do not live in fear.

Finished according to plan early this morning and submitted a few minutes ago. Built all pre-railroad wonders. Expanded as much as I could though there were still room for another 20-30 cities. I was too tired to create a status snapshot at +1500 but I think my population almost tripled from +1000.
