Gotm21-Melee - Pregame Discussion

I went S so I could work all 4 bonus tiles from the starting city. My next city was on the coast to make galleys for the painfully slow Map Making.

This is something I've considered to get more land inside the city borders. The problem being, if we never get to irrigate, we're very limited on food. If we settle in place we can at least build a harbor to increase the city size.

Other thoughts are to settle in place and THEN decide where to send the worker based on the 4 tiles that ar uncovered.

We could also move the worker west and if nothing found, then move the settler south and see if anything is uncovered. A river to the south might make a 2 tile move of the settler worth it.

I just realized the barb-setting is restless. It will be quite different from last month and we better think ahead and protect those settlers!

Yeh and in my test cases it was frustrating to have veteran warriors losing to barbarians but it happened a couple of times in each test.

One more question: What is this QSC- Quick Start Challenge thing?
Is it an option or a must?

I just had a thought that might be an interesting difference in this game.

How will the AI react to the new resources. It seems to me that the goats could cause the AI to waste lots of time improving mountains when there are more efficient uses of time.

My understanding is that the AI looks to improve the most powerful available square, and Goats change the whole mountain dynamic.

Anyone have ideas on this.

Good comment. The AI is already hopelessly poor at improving terrain, and this will maybe slow them down even further. However, goats are at least not a luxury, which the AI certainly would do everything to improve.

Wizard, the QSC is a very worthwhile option that notably improves your early-game play... in turn improving your overall performance. All you need to do is submit a 1000bc save to the QSC - not the GOTM - along with a timeline of at least your key moves. Take a look at past threads to get a better sense of this.

The Gotm21-Mediterranean Melee is now available for you to play if you have prepared your game plan.

Before you download the game, I again want to encourage some of the newer players to hold off in the rush to dive into the game too quickly so that you might take advantage of the QSC strategy discussions and results that will be available from Gotm20-Spain in the next several days.

Please be patient this month and take a few extra moments to make sure that you are downloading the correct version of the game. We agian have the three different classes of play options to help more people enjoy the games but this does require all of us to pay a little closer attention to what we are doing to make sure we end up playing the correct game version.

DO NOT FORGET TO MAKE SURE YOU RESOURCE GRAPHICS ARE PROPERLY INSTALLED **** BEFORE **** LOADING THE ACTUAL GAME.

I again want to remind all players to not participate in this pregame discussion thread in any way once you have downloaded and opened the game file. Again, we will be taking the mature route and trying to leave this discussion thread open to support players who have not yet viewed any portion of the game.

If you have technical questions or problems with either the PTW or v1.29 version of the game, DO NOT POST those issues here or in any other discussion thread. Contact me by email at gotm@civfanatics.net with a description of any perceived problems and we will work quickly to resolve any potential issues.

You may find the location to download the save game file for your version of the game to match the installation instructions that you have followed, by looking at the end of your setup instructions in the readme.txt file.

Good luck to all players and please be sure to submit your results and share the stories of your exploits in this simulated Mediterranean World.

Hmmmm. your timimg is just incredibly bad or your cut and past finger could be goobered up. Try again. ;)

The link in the installer was wrong. I reinstalled the files, cause I wanted to have them perfect. It seems the address shouldn't have an http:// in front of it. Problem solved.

Nope, that's not it. Your timing was just terrible and you hit the window between when the files were beings wapped around by me.

Final change in my strategy after reading carefully DaveMcW's GOTM 20 report.
I was considering a RCP around my first city but I guess that I'll switch to a RCP around my second city where I'll build the FP. I'll also get more cities around as the coastal position is not really good for RCP.

Only 7 more working hours until I can start GOTM 21.

*counting seconds*

Arrrr, maybe I'll set up some tiki torches and start researching suntan lotion...
But seriously, expect there to be some connection between the actual Med and this map. In the Spain map, I noticed that had I sent galleys s-sw, along Columbus' original exploration path, I would have had the best chances of discovering the other civs. There may be some correlation like that this time around, but what could it be...?
I think I'll go predator this time, so I can get properly beaten by the ultra-civvers. It might pay off to be nicer, keeping some of the other civs up-to-date on tech so that they can contribute to the research. Y'know, just give them away, don't bankrupt them, wait for them to research something new, then nab it one way or another. Turn these other civs into sort of tech farms rather than conquest targets. I've never tried this approach to a great degree before, so it's tough to predict how that will play out.

Is there any way to determine what the other civs attributes are? I would normally go to the civolopedia but I doubt this is updated for GOTM21 specifically.

It would be nice to know who is what. Expansionists will grab techs earlier. Industrious will be earlier fast researchers because of the extra roads. Commercial civs will be fastest later in the game because of the extra gold. Who got which replacements instead of being scientific would be nice to know.

Cracker said we would have to find out what the scientific civs have been changed to ourselves. Maybe it's already in the civilopedia, but I think he wants us to work a bit more than that. One way would be to check what their buildings cost when you establish the embassy or spy on them (i.e. if they get a trait reduction in price or not). Of course, expansionist civs get scouts, so you'll quickly recognise those.

Large map and 15 civs, going to be slow on my mac. I guess I'll play the PTW version on my laptop. Now, when to use the GA? W/ the hoplite, I might be able to go a distance before triggering w/ a GW.

Is there a QSC FAQ somewhere? I haven't found any:confused:

I'll propably play as I usually do- cities not too close, as optimally as possible... Idon't know how this will work on Monarch as I' ve never played it before...

I recommend what Yndy was saying.:) He's up to something there...and if I'm going to play this game, I will follow his foot steps too.;)

PS: Starting location looks very good; therefore, I will build the capital at 4000BC.

I am very impressed by the addition of an installer for all the graphic files. Even though it is a simple procedure to follow the readme directions and extract needed game files, I always found it to be a pain in the ass. Sometimes it is the little things that matter.

Thanks cracker.
