I just noticed this comment. Is that a typo, or are you actually doing conquest in Republic??? (or worse yet, running luxuries in monarchy?)

I wiped everybody out except for a Sioux Zoo City byh 740AD, then played in Republic for a few turns to make the civ look respectable, finishing in 900AD. I look forward to seeing Tim's final log - the 100BC to 1AD portion was very efficient, even elegant.

Tim - I found that upping Lux to 10% gave me more gold than keeping it at 0. Not sure why, but maxing gold was the goal so I went with it. I had at least one city in celebration with HG, which may have been why.

The Chinese were easier than I expected, as they lost the race to the Great Wall. The "homeland reinforcements" sufficed to take them out, after which the "vet assault forces" took on the Egyptians. Still, distances slowed things down and I was not in position to kill off the Sioux once the last Egyptian city decided to defect. I finished just after the historic death of Constantine, still researching Chivalry. If I had gotten to Republic I might have considered a few turns of WLTCD, but there were few trade routes or improvements to make that work. Oh well.

I'll post my log next week.

Doh! That's right. I think I even did that myself for a while. My understanding is that it has to do with the way the system deals with fractional results when prorating the trade arrows between the three categories.

If, after prorating and rounding there are any arrows not accounted for, the leftover amount is added to Gold. By splitting the 30% non-gold into two categories, you make it so that in cities with a certain amount of trade, both Science and luxuries get rounded down and the extra arrow goes to gold, whereas at 30% the full amount goes to science.

Another subtle lesson :goodjob: -- maybe we need to start a thread of itty bitty ideas to use in special circumstances.

Like stopping a Settler on a road after two tiles movement and having him do a turn of work, then waking him up again so that next turn he is pre-charged (assuming his next job is 4 or 6 tiles away over roads)?

 I don't remember anything particularly elegant happening during the pre-1ad period...what did I do?

Back when GOTM was in the 'teens the saves would be posted and people would nominate others for wacky awards. Read some of the old Spoiler threads from back then.

I fear he's moved on to something else.

My fear is that he's somewhere caught up in the "Mess o' potamia"* region

Grigor showed some interest in my game, so I got looking at my notes trying to figure out what was so interesting. The one thing I noticed was that, while I didn't always move quickly between civs, I usually hit them hard and fast when I got there, at least on their home turf. (England and Rome had managed to sprout distant colonies which took a little longer to clean up.) I decided to augment the log for anyone interested in seeing how things happened.

The first set of turns was devoted to filling the home island to form the engine that will power our military. Hanging Gardens are built to keep people happy and productive for some time.

Next the focus was on building a war infrastructure; Marco Polo for recon data and technical assistance, Lighthouse for vet ships and safe seas, and Sun Tzu for deadly vet ground forces. These turns also saw a futile attempt to grow through expansion. A few cities were founded but no significant growth. A couple nearby cities helped a bit with the wonder production later in the game, and a few of these cities built the units that took out China, but not much more. The terrain near the home island was absolutely putrid.

After building MPE and seeing the maps, I immediately gave up thoughts of a BC finish, so the assault forces waited until the War Wonders were all built. By the end of this set of turns the war machine was starting to push out across the seas. Some initial caravan deliveries pay for the first wave of fighting.

The war machine is rolling now. These next turns see the end of the Chinese and the English, plus the capture of the Roman mainland. By the end of these turns, troops are already moving from England toward the Sioux where the Capital has been captured and the general plan is in place for a quick attack against the Sioux. Again, the military force was preceded by caravan deliveries to the Sioux to finance their demise.

This next section starts with the rapid elimination of the Sioux. Forces in Sioux lands and England are consolidated and begin the long trek toward Egypt. The home cities focus has for some time been redirected toward addressing the happiness issues caused by our rapidly expanding empire. The original forces, plus some built by newer cities closer to the front, should be sufficient to finish the job at hand. These turns see the creation of a Republic government, plus the completion of Michaelangelos' Chapel and J.S.Bach's Cathedral which together allow us to celebrate many cities even while numerous units are in the field. By the end of these turns, a rather lengthy ship chain is just a few turns away from the Egyptian shores.
