GOTM 66 - Celts!

Remember, you still have a little over a week to finish GOTM65. But it's time to set up GOTM66. We'll visit the Celts this month, and tone the difficulty down to a nice comfortable Regent. 7 other civs will share your standard sized world on a continents map. With 60% ocean, there's a lot of land, but with a Cool setting, how much will be usable. Good Luck!

Civilization: Celts
Rivals: 7 pre-selected.
Barbarians: Restless
Difficulty: Regent
Land Form: Continents, 60% ocean, standard map.
Geology: 4 billion years old, Wet, Cool

Conquest-Class Bonuses:
Bonus Tech Pottery
2 Free Spearmen
50 Extra Gold

Predator-Class Equalisers:
Adjust "same continent" civs to be more aggressive
Starting AI Units and Unit Support set to Monarch levels
Adjust "remote continent" civs to be more cooperative

A reminder: do not post any game information to this thread after you have downloaded the save file. Absolutely no spoiler information for this or any GOTM is to be posted in this thread!

Hmm. What's hiding in the fog?

Celts are Mil+Rel in PtW, IIRC. Not as good as their C3C counterparts, where you'd be seeing many a 100K attempt with this start.

UU is better, though, as it's 40 shields for a 3-2-2 Sword replacement. Hopefully we have Iron to play with.

Settle in place, build Warrior-Warrior-Granary (prebuild with a 'rax/Temple)-Settlers.

You may be correct, in which case, boo... Horses will prove a better bet then (5 Horses or 3 GSs... it's a close call but I'd go with quantity over quality, and they have a better upgrade path too).

hmmm, that start looks so good that there must be something pretty bad waiting for us...
Let's see what the worker finds when going to the cow. Otherwise I see no reason to move. Even if we are on a really small island I can see us outresearching the AI very easily.

With that site and being Mil, 20K is a good bet. Perhaps see if there's a good spot to share the cow for a settler factory for a bit.

I'm thinking move worker to the hill, to show more land? But would it be better not to waste the movement, and go straight to the cows? Daresay I'll end up getting a millitary victory, although this would be a good chance to get my first non-military win.

20K in PtW is best played military-style, so try the best of both worlds...?

Briefly, fast 20K games in PtW/Vanilla rely on the fact that Great Leaders produced in battle can rush Great Wonders. So as much as having a great city site, for max shield production, is important (in case of bad luck getting those GLs), having lots of wars to produce them in the first place is also handy.

Thus being militaristic, for faster promotion, for more Elite units = more chances (though not a better chance per Elite win) to generate GLs.

Being religious helps too as Temples and Cathedrals are half-price (though Sci is slightly better as the buildings are more expensive).

At Regent, there should be no problem in establishing an early and dominant tech advantage, even with the handicapped start often experienced in a 20K game: if you intend the capital as the site, your second city must be a settler pump, and will thus take longer to get running. At PtW of course it is entirely feasible to move the Palace, and build the FP in the old capital, thus getting the Palace back as a pre-build.

Disclaimer: the above is theory and speculation. I've only ever done 20K in C3C, which is a totally different beast, for numerous reasons.

[Edit] Here's an article all about 20K. It's more focused on C3C though but the general city/empire management rules apply. Of course you could always go OCC, in which case throw it all out the window....

Will try 20K culture in this one. Will build firstly few warriors for exploration. Probably 2W is on the coast so maybe will try settling second city there (if there will be enough shields it would be good for 20 K with collosus)

Yes. Definitely. Don't waste your time. There'll be no better land anywhere on the map than these nine tiles.

Four-turn settler factory at size 4..6 (with Granary):

City Center 2/1/3
Irrigated and roaded Cattle 4/1/2
Irrigated and roaded Wheat 3/1/2
Mined and roaded Bonus Grassland 2/2/2
Irrigated and roaded Plains 2/1/2

Produces six shields and five food surplus. On the second turn, on growth, two shields more from the Forest visible in the left corner. Move the new citizen over to another irrigated and roaded plains tile and produce seven and nine shields for the next two turns.

6+8+7+9 = 30 = 1 Settler

Repeat as needed.

In preparation, you'll need to research Pottery for the Granary. It should come in at around 3450 BC together
with a few bucks. You might want to use the Temple or a Settler as a pre-build for the Granary, and then switch as you discover Pottery.

First post updated with Conquest and Predator modifiers. I'm feeling like tweaking the AI tendencies a bit, but it is a little experimental :)

Seems like Open will be slightly better for 20K then, though with Monarch units and more aggression, Predator AIs will probably kick off wars and actually have a slower tech pace. More wars = better for leader fishing = better for 20K. Hmm.

This looks like more my speed, something for us low-level players to at least be able to play, if not compete. I am actually playing at Regent level, so maybe I should challenge myself and load the predator version. May get my butt kicked, but why play a got-em and play it safe? 20K was always easier with MGL's able to hurry wonders, and Celts have a top-tier UU. Much battle may be high risk, but greater rewards. Just gotta avoid being at the bottom of a dogpile. Settling site looks very promising as far as food and production, but theres no visible coast for the seafaring wonders. In a 20k, the Colossus is usually my first wonder built, unless i get a MGL for the Pyramids first. I'll explore a few turns with my worker while my first warrior is produced, but may settle in place anyway. Open or Predator is the big decision here.

wow! I may actually be able to do *something* in this GOTM

grassland cow + plains wheat: we get a 4 turn-er :goodjob:

-and it's at regent: my ballpark!

final conclusion: this will be a very fun game!

OverSeer, I would never explore with your worker. Initial growth is crucial and you have the possibility to build a 4-turn settler factory here. This means you have to put your worker to work as soon as possible.

I can't play this GOTM. I open the PTW folder and I click on the Civilization III PTW icon, but it tells me to insert the PTW disk. THe only disk I have are the CIV III and CIV III conquests which it is in my CD tray but it does not recognize it when I want to play PTW.

If you can do without the PtW extra content (and most people can...), and still have your original Civ3 CD, re-install Civ3, then install Conquests (and the 1.22 patch of course). You'll be able to play PtW with the Conquests CD then.

You probably pathed your PTW which was a mistake...
I had the same problem at first, but PTw wouldn't have needed a patch. reinstall Conquests and then PTW should be fien (I think you don't need reinstalling Civ as a whole)
