GOTM74 Spoiler

No Agni , Since explorers and Diplomats will have no effect on the cities, I usualy send a Caravel with a Diplomat and an Explorer.
AS I Build LEO , Caravels will turn into Galleons ,(Caravels have an impact on their Cities when they are away ..Galleons do NOT )...
I Build Caravels in cities Near my Science City , ( and SST ) and the Explorers will untip HUTS , generally the rate of suceess of finding an advance city by EXPLORERS is better than any other unit.
IF I discover a HUT with Barbarians , then my Diplomat will buy the units depending of the location to a City...( In general the Units will be NONE ) , my Explorer will return to the ship....
THose Units , Horseman in genereal will be turned into Chivalry or Draogoons at at cost of " 0" thanks to Leo,
In General I get the Warriors of other Civs at 39 gold , and at least 12 tiles away from any of my cites.
In time , they will turn into NONE Musketeers
As my 8 or 9 Destroyers ( again ...Iron Clads Build in cities near my Science City and relocated them to SCience City ) will became Veterans just by destroying a Archer or a Phalanx , then able to take a city , with Walls , even with Musketeeres ..will occupy those cities .
My ratio of lost units in general is 5 or 6 a game .
Destroyers can attack 3 or 4 times in a turn ..then when the City is undefended , I land My None Units..take the city .....sell the GRanaries..and buid a defending unit, during that time my Destroyer/s will regaining strenght and ready to take on another city.
My entire Army is composed of 8 or 9 Destroyers all based In Science City...4 or 5 Caravels or Galleons , and all my units Musketeers , Dragoons are generally " None "

Another one of those wandering, pointless games. Not as sloppy as GOTM72 which (combined with that infernal map) kept me from even finishing, but not my best. I played a conquest game, but I didn't put the "pedal to the metal" to get it done. I got the war machinery in place, then didn't really use it. I didn't even keep pushing out a lot of settlers. I spent a lot of time delivering goods and building wonders and waiting to keep my reputation clean before just attacking and wiping everyone out.

In the end I trashed my reputation anyway chasing down a bunch of the restarts, so it was just way too inefficient. Fun game, but I didn't play it particularly well because I didn't really stay focused on any particular goal. Doubt this one will win any awards.

Here's the basics, assuming I wrote stuff down right.

Day 5, Saturday March 31

Pre-turn check, MM Sci City to squeeze in a few extra pop. AI check, Greeks and Aztecs both working on Leonardo. Both have RR, so one may switch to DV. Since they are so far behind we should be ready to divert freight for this, or, as a last resort, tech bomb the builder on the turn prior so new techs are discovered. Wonder check, Oracle is still active and could be useful as many cities have acquired Temples over the years. Magellan is available, is not necessary for trade but is always nice to have. Wonen's Suffrage is available but is not needed. Communism not discovered, so no UN on the menu yet. Maybe some real embassies will make it unnecessary.

1330 As predicted, Greeks switch to DV. We'd better grab it.
1340 COMB--AUTO. Greeks abandon effort on DV. City of Cunaxa.
1360 AUTO--MP. Transport chain to Trondheim established. City of Cremona.
1400 Gift some tech to Aztecs and Greeks.
1440 Notified Greeks almost done DV; divert freight and RB.
1450 DV. Flight--Nuc Pwr-->Radio. Colossus Obsolete.
1525 RECYL-->MON. Aztecs just got this, trade for it. Lesson: don't give Rep too early! Capture Uppsala (Pyramids)--POT. Senate signs cease-fire. Gift a few tech to Icy Greeks.

Quit to watch NCAA Final Four. 63 tech, Taxes 2.5.3 463-110, 3 turns. We have the Laser, now have to fill in Chiv-Ldr-Tac-Tools to get to Mini and Comp -- about 15 turns to SF if freights do well. Greeks are researching Nuc Fission, which is a worry. Atlanta (size 30) makes 516 b/t; peak was greater before Colossus expired. 205 turns down.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
Correction to earlier post -- I am NOT behind, but (slightly) ahead of GOTM 73! That was a 520 turn game with 10-year turns from 1-1000 AD -- this is a 470 turn game with 20-year increments in that era! With diligence and a little luck I can still beat that 250-turn performance, which is to date a personal best. But I don't have the infrastructure for ship parts (HD, factories), so that will be a priority going forward as we research the line leading to COMP. The luck part comes from the Greek research into NF-->ManProj-->nukes, which I didn't have to deal with in 73. But my guess is they won't get ROCK unless they acquire it from me. Need to be careful with the tech gifting and city defense.

How did you manage to build 7 cities that early?

For what it's worth, I built an 8th city the next turn.

I got a boost from one nomad that added one city directly plus another one indirectly from the settler that city spawned. Mostly it was a focused effort to cram in a bunch of little cities very quickly. going through my notes, I think this is how it happened.

3900 - Washington(1) founded with whale access
3200 - Washington builds settler
3150 - Hut nomads in southern portion of island
3100 - Washington settler founds New York(2) on another whale-access square 2 squares SE
2900 - After a few turns of walking, nomads found Boston(3) with access to fish
2700 - Washington builds second settler
2550 - New York builds a settler
2450 - Washington settler founds Philly(4) 2 squares SSW of NY
2350 - Boston builds a settler
2200 - Washington builds a 3rd settler/ New York settler founds Atlanta(5) between Philly and Boston
2150 - Boston settler builds Chicago(6) 2 squares NE of boston
2000 - 3rd Washington settler founds San Francisco(7) 2 squares WNW of Wash.

As mentioned above, New York built a 2nd settler in 2100 which became Buffalo(8) in 1900

A portion of the time I was not running at max science on the sliders so I could get more gold to rush things.

Day 6, Monday April 2

This will be a short session, simple goal is to just make progress on the tech tree.

1535 FEUD->CHIV
1600 Quit for the night after CHIV-(COMM)-LDR-TAC-TOOLS-ADV FLT; still needing MINI--COMP--ROCK--SF, a bit more than I had realized earlier.
Wonder pre-build going for Apollo. HD and several factories, which for now build Alpines and Rifles at 1 per 2 turns. Real embassies with all civs. Taxes 1.6.3 389-191, 3 turns. 70 tech. 35 cities. 225 turns down.

--------------------------------------------------------
Day 7, Tuesday April 3

1605 Hit return, disaster. Vikings demand tribute, denied. Sneak attack from catapult defeats Veteran Riflemen in Uppsala. Elephant takes city. Senate signs cease-fire. Pyramids lost for now. MINI-->COMP.
1615 COMP--MobWar. Greeks, Wm Suffrage; Aztecs Cure Cancer
1645 Another Viking sneak attack lets us recapture Uppsala. Senate--cease fire. Apollo.
1680 Sneak attack by Greeks takes out a Destroyer.
1690 We take Trondheim. Senate allows war to Continue! Democracy w/o UN! (v2.7.8)
1695 Sneak attack by Aztecs costs them 2 ships and a horse. All 3 SS Modules completed.
1705 Peace with Vikings for 300.
1710 Missed launch by 1 structural (9 yrs vs 6 yrs for 1 structural)
1715 29-7-7 ship launched, lands 1721 (6 turns)
1716 Vikings destroyed by revolt x2 last city. Germans spawn. Launching does not stop restarts.
1719 Took most of Aztecs, 4 wonders and destroyed their SS (one structural) :)
1720 Aztecs Destroyed.
1721 Ship lands, we win. 259 turns if I count right. Abe Lincoln the Lion-Hearted.

WoW! You are really fast Agni Neres. I finished at 1964 AD and I thought is was pretty nice result.

A Nomad that early is a big help. Still amazing result though.

You will probably win the green star if not more.

I,m almost finished. Launched my spaceship (100 points) yesterday in 1630. It will land in 1645AD. When finished (today or tomorrow) I will give more details. It was very hard without the purple civ to get the discoveries quick. The freight deliveries helped a bit but faster then two turns a discovery was not possible.

I seriously doubt I'll get a star for this one. I feel like I was treading water for about 10 turns too long delivering freight to greece and building wonders. I let the aztecs hang around for hundreds of years trying not to sully my reputation, and by the time I broke down and attacked greece, I had about 3 times more units in position than I needed to take them out.

I assume if someone like Peaster played for conquest he probably could have finished before 1 AD or pretty close to it if the restarts weren't too unkind.

True, but among those who have posted no one has even bothered to go after an early conquest. Peaster usually posts so I assume he is not playing this month.

As matter of fact Peaster has not post anything on this forum or on Apolyton since half feb. Does anyone know if he's away for some while or is there anything else?

Been a little busy, and had to skip 73, but I have been checking on the games whenever I could. Looks like we have a couple of new players! :)

I just finished 74. With restarts on, I played for a big civ ASAP, thinking more of gold than green (I agree that Tim has good chances for that). I threw in a 16 turn republic phase in the late BC years as an experiment, for growth and econ. It turned out OK, and I always had spending money after 300BC. But I never got bonuses over 300g, so it wasn't a great success. I conquered the AI, except one pet, in about 240AD. I guess a BC finish is possible, but my game was not planned around that.

2000BC: 5 cities, pop70, Mfg14, monarchy:

have 2S/2misc/3tri/1van, @lit. MPE shows other civs have a few cities:
Vik(2) Azt(2) Gereks(3)

500BC: 23 cities, pop880, Mfg72?, republic:
have 3S/8misc/8tri/6vans, @poly, have 2WoWs(MPE+Pyr), Vik(3) now.

1AD: 40 cities, pop4m, Mfg171, monarchy:
have 14S/8cru/20tri/24vans, 400g, 26advs@inv, have 4WoWs(MPE+Pyr+HG+MC). AI's have 3/3/4 cities (mostly at "peace")

500AD: 116 cities, pop11m, Mfg511, demo:
have 2S/14cru/31tri/19vans, 400g, 32advs, have approx 12WoWs, AI's have 1 city

Finished in the 500-800AD period, with 60 big cities (approx size 8) and 60 smaller ones. 14 WoWs.

Speaking of medals....Hey Duke....

Thanx.

My goal was to research up to Railroad, expand and grow in democracy till about 1500 and then eliminate all the rivals hoping for no restarts.

I let too much real time pass after getting to +1000. It was about 4 in the morning after a marathon session that I realized I would need another week to play like that. I immediately switched to fundamentalism. At this point Vikings were already without a capital and down to a few cities, Perfectionist Aztecs never expanded much, and Greeks had over 10 cities.

I immediately went after Greeks by attacking and bribing. It took me a few turns to produce and get military to Aztecs. Tenochtitlan fell easily in 1250. Athens was better defended, but it too went down in 1260.

At this point I got overconfident (being up all night has a way of dulling some of your senses) and did another revolution with the goal of reestablishing my thriving democracy and bribing my way to the end. What was I thinking? How was I going to deal with the restarts?

Crafty Aztecs moved their captial to an offshore city which forced me to remain in fundy after the revolution. It also kicked some sense into me and for the rest of the game I stayed in fundy.

It took me a while to get to the outlying Greek cities. I destroyed all 3 rivals in 1330 and all 3 respawned. Many of the respawns ended up in subprime terrain and thus did not build a city immediately. I bought several settlers before they established their city.
