I believe I also had a spotless reputation so I could probably have won a UN victory any of the three times I was given a choice for a vote. France ran away with her continent and was the largest civilization (almost twice my size). I was running second but had the tech lead by 4 or 5 techs. England had one city, Zulu had 7, and Aztecs had 15. I had 26 to France's 54. No one but me made it to the Modern Ages.

I decided to do a Domination game, but I ended up not doing that soon enough to get anything but a decent score, nothing that would win any awards. The Zulu were pushovers but the Arabs and Aztecs were tougher, helped by my difficulty getting through the jungle. On my other Continent, The Greeks and English were small cultured civs with France and Rome being the big guys. I took out the Greeks and England but still needed ~200 tiles, which I took from Rome. I didn't get my confirmation e-mail, but IIRC, I finished around 1400 with a Firaxis score of ~5000 and a Jason of around 8000.

BTW, nice job Racinante. I won't even talk about my first GOTM, I did so bad.

Thank you! In the last week or two I've decided to make the move from Emperor to Demigod. The first couple of games I was wiped out. The third was a Tiny map where I was on my way to a conquest / domination victory when the Aztecs crushed me with culture (60/100k). Now playing standard, all random, with 6 opponents, and all victory conditions except Wonder, it looks like I may be closing in on my first DG win as well.

These XOTM games have given me more focus in playing and combined with these forums and strategy articles increased my skill and determination to conquer the higher levels.

I went for Histo the whole way, for the first time ever. Man that makes for a long game! I moved worker sw at the beginning, then settled 1w, picking up all the cows (shared them around, obviously). Settler factory up and going quick, although I never could figure out how to use all the shields available to get it to be a settler + warrior 4 turner, and ended up with massive shield overruns. Not much of a worry though.

Military-wise I piled everyone on the Arabs to get their troops out of my way and declared on Zulu as soon as they made peace with the Arabs. They had about 10 total units in their land, so that went fast. Remaining troops went up to actually fight Arabia (previous round had been a pseudo-war for me), knocked them down to 1CC in the tundra so I'd have them around to finish with sipahi when the time came. At that point I switched all my horsemen to knights and took out Aztecs. Sipahi came through right at the end of that, so I cleared our continent with the first two sipahi, ending Arabia and Aztecs on the same turn ~750ad.

Soon thereafter England landed a settler pair on an unfilled corner in the NW AND a military unit of some kind on the tiny island to the SW, where I had exactly one warrior. I should have let them declare on me I think, would've had less WW that way, but didn't think about it. Warrior lost, they took that island for a turn or two, I took their whole nation with sihapi and elite knights, finally getting my first leader in 840, and another in 850. Fair trade.

I'd been on 4 turn research since approximately Chemistry, gifted Greece up and got their Steam plus Medicine for myself, which was nice - rare that no one got nationalism as a freebie. By 1000ad Rome had picked a fight and seen what they thought was a SoD made of swords and maces evaporate against sihapi, that was fun. Greece went next, 1CC'd to keep them around for MA transition. Rome and France were fairly well balanced in my game, and I was going to let them live if they played nice, but of course they didn't. They both got beat back with tanks vs rifles and again later with Mod. Armor vs infantry and a few Mechs. In the end only France was around - they had the tiny mountain island in about 2000ad, from which they spread a few cities by game end, but who cares at that point.

I almost won by accident a few times, in my first histo try... I've never been able to get CA2 to work for me, so eventually I said okay, I have to stop eyeballing the map for the dom limit and got MapStat. I was under the limit - by exactly two tiles. Oops. Would've founded a city that next turn too. Also had to watch culture - I built the Internet in 1575 after forgetting to switch a prebuild from Manhattan proj kept me from getting it 10 turns earlier. It's a good thing I forgot to switch that. I noticed in 1600 that culture was going to be a problem and sold off absolutely everything culture-producing, but since almost all the wonders were in my capital, I didn't want to abandon it (and lose Smiths, Bachs, etc just to lose Internet). Worked out - I finished with 98500 in 2050, and 19000 in Sogut.

That's probably my last histo win for a while though!

Seeing that there would be some competition in the 20k arena, I chickened out again.

The start position was generous, even after I moved to the coast. My capital was built in 3800 BC. Contacts came quickly, with 2 expansionist civs on the continent, plus a fast warrior replacement for the third.

The AIs were pretty good about leaving me alone in the AA. Colossus, Oracle, Great Lighthouse, and Great Library came in short order, and by 350 BC the horses were within my cultural borders. The Aztecs and Arabs had an early war, while the Zulu expanded slowly but steadily across the southern half of the continent.

I had managed to send a galley to discover the other continent by this time, with all contacts acquired in 710 BC, and revolted to republic in 110 BC. As this was a GOTM game, Shaka demanded contact with the Romans in 30 BC. They had built a city that would take the horses away from me with one cultural expansion, so I was willing to let them declare war so I could destroy it. I also brought the Aztecs and Arabs into alliances against the Zulu. Oddly enough, the Caesar demanded contact with the Zulu shortly afterwards, which I welcomed as another source of war happiness.

I was building 1 archer per turn by this time, and pretty soon had an excess of them. Feudalism allowed me to start using Sun Tzu's to prebuild, though I didn't have a specific wonder in mind; I simply wanted to stop building units. My first MGL came from an archer win against an impi in 600 AD, so I wasted a few shields to switch to Copernicus, then rushed Leo's. I think this was when I decided that a military victory would be possible in this game.

After razing Zimbabwe and destroying the Pyramids and the Great Wall in the process, it seemed like the Aztecs were getting too strong and the Zulu had taken enough of a beating. Shaka gave up Printing Press for peace.

Rome finally lands a few legionaries by my capital, giving me the opportunity go trade GPT for peace + techs. Two turns later, I've goaded them into declaring war again, getting my money back. I started a war on the other continent by allying France against Rome, hoping that the AI would exhaust themselves and let me deal with the issues on my home continent.

I had to keep the Aztecs in check, so they were next on my list, not making peace until I gained access to spices and gems. More MGL's turned into Shakespeare's and Newton's. Medicine was the free tech once I reached IA, which I sold for some huge GPT from Greece and England. When Zululand got down to 1 city, I wheedled Nationalism out of a GPT alliance with France. Conveniently, this was my first Sipahi victory, starting my GA.

In 1440 AD, I got hit by two demands for spices, one from Rome, the other from England. Both declared war. Looking at the diplomatic situation, I decided to stir the pot some more. I ally Greece against England, then attack a Roman city in former Zulu territory, triggering a Greco-Roman MPP. Next, I destroy a Greek city near the horses, triggering a Greco-Aztec MPP. France would be my best ally during this time, at war with the rest of the other continent. This war happiness was going to last a while.

When my alliance with Arabia expired in 1545 AD, I immediately made peace with the Aztecs and switched sides. The Arabs were overextended and quickly destroyed (21 cities razed in 8 turns). The Aztecs were permanently crippled by now; when Greeks ultimately allied them against me, it was another 4 turns for them to be eliminated.

Home continent was clear by 1750 AD. Plundering barbarian camps would be a very helpful source of revenue for the rest of the game, without which I would have been ruined by unit support.

I began landing troops in Greek territory a few turns later, then razed Greek cities until I had cleared a path to England, which got eliminated in 1812 AD. Rome was the strongest AI now, so I made peace with Greece to get them into an alliance and gain access to their railroad network.

The Roman AI started to act kind of funny here -- I was rampaging through their core, yet they still had tons of infantry running around Greek and French territory, and they kept sending units that way. One stack of them captured Paris, which I razed the next turn, conveniently destroying Sun Tzu's. Even when they were down to 2 cities, the Romans made a successful attack on Marseilles, which wasn't too far from where Paris originally stood.

In 1896 AD, I stood at 19,949 culture, 97 cpt. Time to revolt to anarchy.

The Romans were destroyed in 1904 AD, followed by RoP abuses against France and Greece. Greece was destroyed in 1938 AD, leaving the French with a single city on the tiny island in the north. My lone scientist makes the breakthrough to reach Modern Age just before my ships could reach the French island. I had a MGL in town, so I managed to build SETI Program in anarchy. The next turn, the French are no more. (Curiously enough, this generated another MGL that I had absolutely no use for on the last turn.)

This victory came slightly faster than I expected. I guess the Sipahi really are overpowered after all. I was surprised that my final score was in the 4 digits.

The industrials were quite uneventful. No other sneak-attacks, no wars between the AS. In the need of collecting resources, we sent a task force of workers to the other continent, to connect France with Greece and gain access to French resources via the English harbors. After completing the task, the workers ventured northward to connect Rome with France and gain access to Roman luxuries as well.

Having Nationalism and Steam Power, we start researching Electricity. Next turn the Golden Age begins and the tech is completed in 5 turns. Then, with the relocation of the capital into Tenochtitlan, research gets a decisive boost, to the point that we were able to keep a pace of 4 turns each for the whole Industrials.

We went straight for Replaceable Parts, to benefit of the worker bonus and improve quickly enough the new core, then we neglected Medicine and went for the upper branch. Once researched Combustion we went for Medicine -> Scientific Method and up. The goal was to get the AS research Flight (it had 20 turns) but this tactic failed because all the AS went for all the optional crap possible, including Free Artistry, so we ended up doing all the research on our own.

Despite that, the right pick at the start of the Modern Ages made us possible to achieve a diplomatic victory in 820 AD, for a Firaxis score of 7157 and a Jason score of 10850. This is the best result i ever achieved in a science game.

And here's the tech log of the IA:

20k victory in 1690
Firaxis score 5169
Jason score 7835

this is my very first 20k game. i never finished and never even tried one. so i guess it was about time.

the log:
i move 1 NE to use the river optimally and see the cow. worker builds road in place. found Sogut and see elephant, research on IW. soon i find many more cattle and now i am not so enthusiastic about the position of the capital any more.
build sequence: warrior-warrior-settler
meet the Zulus in 3500BC but wait with trades
i see a site where even i could think of a 20k... a victory condition that does not really suit my playing style.
in 3100BC i build my 20k city next to the sea in the SW, with 4 herds of cattle within reach. start temple and support the city with lots of builds from the capital, especially workers.
i meet Arabia and start trading. i see that iron lies WAY down the road.
from 1425BC on the 20k city is completely up and running and Sogut becomes a 6 turner, producing 2 units and 1 settler in each course. i decide for a big empire for research, as i have to do ALL the AA research by myself. no way i could rely on the AI for help when techs become more expensive.
in 1000BC i have 4 cities, 20 citizens (12 in 20k city), 2 workers, 8 warriors, 2 archers, 1 spear. in 710BC the English finish the only wonder in the game not built by Ottomans, The Great Lighthouse. in 650BC i research Republic and revolt within 6 turns. in 230BC i make contact with the other continent and trade for all the contacts immediately. i build all embassies and find that it is going to be close for the late AA cascade. i finish the Great Library which triggers my GA (33spt in 20k city). i start war against the Zulus for land and ressources, but they don´t make up for a good fight at all. soon i am by far the first to the MA in 90BC and get FEUD as my free tech. building the GW in 70BC stops all cascades.
since they don´t do any research i decide to instigate war on the other continent and research everything by myself. i stay with that decision until the end. later i set it up to receive WH from everyone. MT is the only tech i get from them from here on, relatively close to the end of the game. by 800AD i practically own my continent but keep 2 AIs alive for WH and leaderfishing.
my 2nd wonder town builds Sun Tzu´s in 420AD and Leo´s in 800AD. i enter the IA in 890AD, the AI not having researched a single tech while i mastered a whole age!
my first mgl built an army, all others i got hurried great wonders.
this is not going to become my favourite victory condition, that´s for sure, but i am happy i managed to pull this off once now:

Bah, I missed the deadline by less than an hour. I guess that means I shouldn't say anything about my game. But maybe there will be a diplomatic Gold medal for tricky as a result, which would be "fun." Yeah.

Uh uh. I got 11001 Jasons on a 100k win. Victory in 1390ad, which is a pretty standard date for these settings. I guess the 5 cows in the starting area had the effect of giving the Jasons quite a boost across the board. If there are any fast doms or conqs out there, I would expect scores over 12000.

I never finished this game... kept putting it off and putting it off. I was going for Space/Diplo, but really, after my start where I totally botched research (going for Wheel, then Mysticism, thinking that I'd have early contact with an Alphabet AI...), I was going nowhere fast. I submitted a retired game to at least register something. 1130AD, researching Mass Production, about 1200 Jason.

I accidentally played this game in some version of C3C, so I can't upload. All I have is Vanilla and Civ Complete with no patches.

I put the original *.sav file in a Saves folder I created in the PTW folder of Civ Complete and played the game. When I had nearly finished (ran out of time) and tried to upload my file to GOTM, it said I had played in the wrong version.

Does anyone know how to keep this from happening next time?

The PTW executable is in the complete folder (maybe the PTW folder under the complete folder, can't check right now). I made a shortcut and put one on the desktop and one on my start menu.

Thanks, Racinante. I'm all set to play the next one now.

tR1cKy - You mentioned three SOURs happening to you when you were attacking Aztec cities. What is a SOUR?

Series Of Unfortunate Rolls, meaning the RnG turned nasty. It means in a simpler way of saying, he lost some battles he should've won. :spear: is an exaple of a SOUR.
