Check out this set of facts. Fact 1: Gov. Mark Sanford went missing Thursday and hasn't been seen since. Fact 2: His staff has since told us that the governor has been hiking the Appalachian Trail. Fact 3: Sunday was "Naked Hiking Day" on the Appalachian Trail. We kid you not.

The Christian Science Monitor: "We’re not suggesting that the formerly missing Governor of South Carolina specifically ditched his family and security detail to go hiking on Naked Hiking Day. But that’s what he ended up doing. ... But many wondered aloud how this traditional, family-loving, Republican governor of a southern state could miss Fathers Day. After all he’s got four children! Was something sinister in the air? Then it took a Farrelly brothers screenplay type of twist. Sanford had not disappeared. According to his spokesman, he was hiking on the Appalachian Trail. Coincidentally, on Naked Hiking Day. It’s a big tradition. Many hikers celebrate the summer solstice by hiking au naturel. It just so happened the solstice occurred on Fathers Day -- one of the days Sanford was hiking."

I guess when his state legislature told him to take a hike during the stimulus funds boondoggle, he took them a little too literally.

Apparently Tim Kaine is incognito as well, and the RNC has launched an attack piece, criticizing him for taking off when so many hard working Republican governors are hard at work.

You should know what's wrong with this picture.

How does an executive go missing for a few days like that?

When that guy is the head of the equivalent of a Fortune 500 company, you say "How was your trip?" and listen to his incredibly unwanted stories of how incredible hiking naked is.
Perhaps. There have been CEO's of Fortune 500 companies ousted for erratic behaviour. Nevertheless, it was a mistake to not let somebody in on the secret, so they wouldn't have to play Where's Waldo had an state emergency happened in his absence.

If you had an employee blow off work for 5 days with telling anyone, would that employee have a job upon returning?

ok, five days are some time.

however, it is solemnly his business what he does where with or without what to whom in what position, you get my drift.

not having read the whole article (outside what youve posted in this thread), I surely think his "employees" would have known how to contact him ;-)

He has gone 'missing' several times before (last year at this time he went dove hunting in Argentina, and other times he went on a hunting trip, Air Force reserve training for two weeks, and on a yacht in bermuda), most often after legislative sessions are over. So there was less 'work' that needed to be done, but it is a good point that he should be able to be contacted should an emergency like a weather disaster happens. The silly part is one of his critics have said "with Iran acting up the way it is.." Seriously, WTH? is a governor going to do about Iran?

With the thousands of people who go hiking on the 2,000+ mile trail everyday and the fact that only maybe what, a couple dozen of them are the 'nudist hikers', it's unlikely he was one of the naked hikers. If he went only for the one-day event of 'nudist hiking', why did he hike the trail for four days?

How does an executive go missing for a few days like that?

Simple. Go on a trip and turn off cell-phones.

Kaine dug his own hole by making the promise of only doing DNC chairman duties (which would take time away from Governor duties) "on personal time, weekends, and evenings", but in reality he did some of them on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
