hi i am fairly new to civ III. i still get beaten fairly easily. now what i wanted to ask was about the city governors. Are they any good? usely i only set them to manage the moods of the citizens but nothig else. is that a good thing or a bad?

I recently started using them for citizen mood and never got disorder, now I'll use them for citizen mood, food, commerce and production. I still get to choose what to build, and when building wonders I turn off the commerce and food in that city: full production. I must say I like them, I was very sceptic with the idea but that didn't prove to be needed.

I too have started using the Governors, and have been generally pleased with the results.

They still do strange stuff on occasion, though, and I do have to micro-manage a city here and there.

I think they're most usefull when you're at war, and you can use them to combat war-weariness. Much better then having to go through all your cities each turn and adjust the entertainers. :)

I basically only use them to manage mood when I'm fighting a war in democracy or Republic. Otherwise its more efficient to manage your own cities. But for new players governors are very good although you'll eventually want to turn them off when you start playing emporer or higher.

It depends on the level you play. On higher levels they are more like an obstacle of winning. I personally never use them because of the following: Everybody agrees that AI is dumb in a lot of ways. So why would I want to let a dumb AI interfere in my game?

They often do really silly things...

Using the govenors is fine. But like tofe99 says, it tends to limit your play.

I used the govenors up to Regent, and when I tried to jump to Monarch, part of the problem was the govenors. When I learned how to micromanage on regent, monarch got a lot easier. A lot. Of course, YMMV.

But one thing I do think: the govenors are good for teaching other aspects of the game. Once you've got those down, learning how to micromanage can be a lot easier, as you're not trying to learn other things as well.

I was a die-hard govenor user, btw. I'd pull up some of my older posts, but that was a different user. ;)

On thing that govenours are useful for, is to set them all to "emphasise production". Then on the turn the city grows, when you cannot produce any more food anyway, the extra citizen will be put on a high production tile, rather than a high food tile. You can then move it to a high food tile for the next turn.

thx for all your answers. since i am still a newb i think i am gonna use them i bit more until i get better and can do those things too.

@ Nostra .... Like you, I only use governors to manage moods, especially early in the game. Later in the game as the cities become larger, I tend to manage all aspects.

if you use them to say manage production, can you still micro managa your cities without the governers interfering and changing back to what it was before you micro managed?
that would be useful

If you DON'T use the governors and micromanage everything, how many cities do you have? If I have had an excellent expansion(first or second!), with over 15 cities, I find it quite tedious to manage all of thier moods and squares. Setting the governor to manage production and mood, I find I always have growth and max production (which is what I want anyways.) Of course, if I find myself in a 5CC by circumstance(ha!) or design I will micromanage all of my cites for maximum effect.

Honestly, I am sure it would help, but I already spend at LEAST 12 hrs on an epic game micromanaging workers, military and making plans...do I really need to spend more?

Of course, there is occasionally a 'problem child' city that needs to be dealt with usually due to corruption, and I will manage it until it is prosperous.

Just so everyone is on the same page here: I never let the governor control what I actually build. I hope no one is confused on that point, but I thought it should be said.

What you do is *emphasise production* rather than manage production. Then you can micromanage more eficently than without them.

Depends on the expansion phase, but often I will have more than 15. What I do is have a routine - I have popup on, and when I get one I micromanage that city. Then at the end of each turn I check the happyness of my empire (I have the mod with coloured faces to make this easier) and micromange my settler/worker factorys. It does not take that long. I probably spend longer managing workers.

12 hours, does that include getting to the industrial/modern age? I do have a tendancy to leave civ on while I watch the snooker (Ronny is going to win tonight :)) but I reakon I hit 12 hours sometime in the Medievel age, esp. if it has been a bloody game.

I don’t care what anyone says, I use the governor to manage citizen mood, and to emphasize food and production in citizen placement. They work fine for about 95% of my cities. I do micromanage the rest (to speed growth, to complete a wonder, etc) This works for me through deity on PTW. I am playing emperor on C3C now and governor works fine there too.

I suggest doing a search or two before starting a new thread. Here are some other threads discussing the merits of the governor:
