Goz7 - The Squeeze Rematch

1585 AD (7) - Egypt finally took Bonampak from Egypt.

Egypt took a city from itself?

We have lots of gold, rush stuff.

There's also heaps of tiles that needs rails, so get those workers moving.

A town on the choke under Maya would be nice. And our culture is on a steady rise.

No coal, so no rails.

I turned off research during my turns, and Intelligence Agency is coming, so we'll need cash for some steals. We need to put money towards warmongering means, as we aren't going to win without trimming the Egyptians majorly. Rushing a cathedral here and a library there won't do any good.

Also, there are some settlers in production for claiming land, but the ones that finished in my turns had other places to go than the Mayan choke.

I agree 100%. Our culture growth rate vs. Egypt won't cut it. They only way to win by culture is to RAZE several good Egyptian cities.

Lots of games to play, so little time to play. But I'll pull it off somehow. I've got it.
I understand that feeling. I realize I have over-committed a bit. That is why I didn't replace LK90 / LK91.

Some things are preference, and it is to late to change. I would have build additional military before the pentagon. I still feel our quality troops are way to thin. To hurt Egypt we need a lot more troops.

I 100% agree with the spy agency. At some point we should be able to steal a tech from Egypt that another civ doesn't have. That will let us hopefully pull some 2 for 1 deals to catch up even faster. The nice thing with stealing from Egypt is we risk nothing while at war.

I know we are building up cash to steal, but can we rush the harbor on the saltpeter island? We at least need cavalry to start a useful offensive.

[Edit:We need to be very careful with our armies. A tank could be willing to attack an undefended Cavalry Army on the flat.

Though I didi not say it explicity, I was sort of alluding to this, when I said get everything out of tank range. Actually, to be really safe before ending the turn get everything out of bomber range too.

lurker's comment: Tanks will definitely attack a fully healed, 20pt cav army on flat land. I learned the hard way last night.

Preturn- We look alright.

IT- Mayans have company, as 8 Egyptian tanks end up next to Copan.

T1 1605

Ding some of the tanks and take out one. Hopefully that will be enough help for the Mayans.

IT- Mayans hold the line, but lots of new friends appear.

T2 1610

Its expensive, but I start to work on upgrading our massive stack of trebs. If we convert all of them into Arty we can stand a chance of making a dent in Egypt.

I decide to move our troops back as the armies have been dinged up realy nice from bombers.

IT- Mayans maintain their holdings.

T3 1615

Upgrade a couple more trebs.

IT- Ouch, Mayans lose two cities. We have Egyptian and Dutch landings to deal with.

T4 1620

Kill the Dutch landing, weaken the Egyptian one. We get an egent in Thebes, but fail in Amsterdam.

IT- Nothing much

T5 1625

I take a look at Cleo's military. 63 tanks will be fun to deal with. I do a careful steal and succeed, taking Refining. We have two oil sources.

Kill a Dutch landing, kill an Egyptian landing.

IT- Egypt lands a bunch of tanks.

T6 1630

Kill the tank stacks. Maya is crumbling fast.

IT- quiet for once.

T7 1635

Not much to do. Just gather up gold for another steal.

IT- Egypt has broken all the way through to or borders! Tanks spill across the border. They cut a swath straight through the Mayans to get to us.

T8 1640

Kill off the tanks and try to establish a killing zone by the choke.

IT- More tanks come in.

T9 1645

Kill off some more tanks. Things seem under control now. I try another careful steal and succeed. We are the owners of Steel now.

IT- Another six or so tanks roll in.

T10 1650

Another six or so tanks bite it. Egypt is now real threat as long as we have enough arty to keep the gauntlet operational. Wait until the mechs start flowing in though.

Summary

We're a bit better militarily, and only 3 techs from tanks now. Tanks obviously have to be our priority. We won't stand a chance without them. Egypt hasn't started the SS yet, so we still have a good deal of time.

The Maya suck and still have rifles. The Maya won't be much of an ally.

The Maya have rifles as defenders. Egypt has tanks for offense. Egypt would eat the Maya alive. I do NOT want to ally with the Maya. They are useless as an ally.

1550 AD (0) - I can't think of much reason not to ally the Mayans against the Egyptians. At the very least, they will eat units for us. They have rubber and RP, so the argument that they only have rifles is out the window.

Even though the Maya just got RP around the beginning of Bed_head7's turn they didn't have time to build up enough infantry. This is exactly what I fear was going to happen if we allied with the Maya. There were to weak to be of help. I also realized the burned most of their units fighting us and had no reserves.

We still have another major problem fighting Egypt - an imcomplete rail-net and no coal to fix it.

I have a request that we move some of the troops on the salt island back. We have 2 armies, and several precious artillery stuck over there.

Do we want to make peace with Egypt? At this point we really need tanks to any damage, and we still need 3 more techs. Of course, we need the Maya to make peace first or the alliance to run out.

20 turns of peace should hopefully let us build some tanks and fix the gaps in the rail-net. If we really want to keep fighting we need cavalry and the harbor rushed on the salt island.

You were right about lack of units, but I never saw them have to defend with rifles. I was hoping that we would be able to help a bit more than we did, and it also didn't help that we weren't able to get the Dutch in on our side. I am not really sure that we even had much of an alternative. If the Maya don't go to war, what is to stop them from signing RoP with Egypt? And if that happens, how easily will those tanks take care of our defending pikemen?! At the moment, the extra land Egypt has is not adding much to their offense, is keeping them from doing much in the way of research and infrastructure, and it is destroying some of their tanks. It hasn't been pretty, but I don't know that we could do much other than ally with the Maya.

A not eabout the troops on the island, I do have the cav army loaded on a galleon so it can be shipped over and put into service all in the same turn when needed. I was reluctant to remove all the troops for there as the Egyptians have enjoyed having picnics on the beach there.

One technique I have found effective is intense warfare will cause the AI to Mobilize. While it is mobilized it won't start the UN or Apollo. I don't know we are there yet - we need to break out past the choke and start razing cities.

I think we should also keep expanding if when we can. If we can get to 35% of the world, we will prevent a domination win.

No suprise; Maya is no longer the cultural leader. They have just a little bit more than us.

UN has been built already, and can be built when mobilized. But Egypt can't get the votes, so it doesn't really matter.

In another SG (Sid Vicious, I think) someone posted a screenshot and a save of a game where UN had been built during mobilization.
