GR26 - AWE Archipelago vs 30 civs (No GL)

...decide to stick with HBR as we need 2 techs anyway for maths
Yeah, that makes a difference.

I download the save when I get home.

Forming an archer army and sending it into Japan definitely looks like the right choice. :goodjob: But we should bear in mind that due to rounding down, a three-unit archer army gets no attack or defense bonuses--it's just a 2-1 unit with a lot of HP--so we should use it with appropriate caution.

Kibitzer:

That is correct:

2+2+2/6 = 1 (if no Pentagon or MA)

Their read danger is that they will be at risk for attacks with the low defense value.

Brief Looksee at the Map
Six more Furs are visible in the Great Forests to our north.
A lone Incense is stuck on a coastal hill to the north-east.
Another Horse is in the hills to the east.
There is also a clump of Incense between us and Japan.

No enemies are visible anywhere.

We have two settlers in motion, one to the NE of Istanbul, two turns away from a new city (one to move and then we build) and the other N of Bursa, destination unknown. We are rather cramped for space to the north, with the Great Forest limiting where we can build and easily improve. Towards Japan we have more open green and that looks better right now.

[IBT 0750 BC]
Edrine vSpear -> vSpear in 3.

1 0730 BC

Worker SE of Aydin moves to unimproved BG SW of Aydin, to mine and road.
Aydin walls in 7 -> barracks in 17, so as not to waste the chop.
New Spear from Edrine heads to the NE, to help establish our new city.
Worker SE of Edrine moves NE to connect our new city.
Settler pair move NE, now CxxC from Istanbul, ready to build next turn. However, it will take two turns to move from Istanbul to here, due to the rivers.
Other Settler and Spear join up W of Bursa.
eArcher joins vSpear on a hill 2S of the Incense Colony.
Archer Army (10/13) heals outside of Japan.

Antalya is founded, begins a barracks.

Two Japanese rArchers come into sight near our Archer/Spear pair, Fortify the Spear.
Settler pair moves to 1S of Iznit.
Worker/slaves 1S of Iznit, task completed, move 1S.
Begin to mine the BG SW of Aydin; only four turns instead of six because we are IND (I forgot that we were ).

Archer Army moves 2W, mountain to mountain and ends 1NE of Kyoto (2). Horrible location for a capital, a grassland tile that has one mountain and three marsh tiles in the tiles around the city and nine marsh tiles in the Fat-21. An rSpear defends the city.

Edrine, now size 6, goes cranky; happy slider to 10%.

Our eArcher dies after promoting Japanese rArcher to vArcher (0 of 1).
2nd vSpear arrives in Antalya.
Forest chopped N of Aydin, worker mines the uncovered grassland.
New Archer heads SW towards Japan.
New Spear heads towards Japan, also.

Archer Army takes out 2 rSpears in Kyoto (2 of 3) at least one more left.
Archer Army is at 6/13, on a mountain.

Kyoto at size 1.

German vArcher threatens the worker connecting Antayla. Move Spear to protect Worker. Wake eArcher in Uskadar and move to protect Worker.
Settler pair move onto the Tobacco southish of Iznik, still CxxC from Iznik.
New vSpear heads to Uskudar, which has only one Spear for defense.

Looks like Japan is heading towards the Incense Colony. And all we have around are defensive units.

Iznik vSpear in 1 -> vArcher in 1.

34 gold, -1 gpt, Alphabet in 10.
[IBT]
German Archer defeats the Spear defending the Worker at Antayla, but the eArcher saves the Worker from capture (2 of 4).
Second German Archer appears beside this one.

Iznik vArcher -> vArcher in 5.

5 0650 BC

Antayla is now connected. Too dangerous to improve this BG right now. Worker moves into Antayla and then south of the city, to connect a second way to Istanbul (but this road will also cross the river that borders Istanbul).
eArcher moves into Antayla.
vSpear and vArcher in Uskudar moves into Antayla.
Newer vSpear and vArcher move into Uskudar and fortify.

Tobacco Smoke is founded; begins walls.
New Archer from Isnik moves to Tobacco Smoke.
Second Spear arrives at Incense Colony and fortifies.

One Archer in Kyoto, as we pincushion one rSpear, another rSpear remaining (3 of 5). Army at 7/13.
We decimate that rSpear, with no Archer to interfere, leaving only the lone vArcher defending, but the Army is now at 4/13 and is redlined (4 of 6).
Only units that can attack on the IBT are in Kyoto, which has only the vArcher left.

33 gold, +1 gpt, Alphabet in 8.

Japanese units head to Kyoto/redlined Archer Army.
Green Horses show up.
One German Archers moves onto the mountain by Antayla, other fortifies and heals.
German rSpear 2N of Aydin, threatening our Worker.

Istanbul vHorse -> vHorse in 3.

6 0630 BC

Archer Army moves 2E, mountain to mountain, and is now outside of Japan. Can be attacked by an rArcher, but that rArcher could attack the Army where it is now with the same odds. Outside of Japan, the Army will heal faster.

North of Tobacco Smoke, Worker and Slaves mine.
SE of Aydin, mine completed, begin to road.
Worker N of Aydin is waken and moves into Aydin.

At Antyla, the Green Horses are from Persia. Total of three, all Regulars, in two tiles. They are drawn to the undefended Worker.
eArcher drives off one Horse 1W of Antayla(which counts as a victory of sorts) (5 of 7).
vArcher scatters the other Horse in that tile (6 of 8).
Move vSpear to protect the now exposed vArcher.
Reinforce with 2nd vArcher, since these units could face three counterattacks (1 Persian, 2 German) on the IBT.
Forgot about the 1st vHorse in Istanbul. It destroys the lone redlined Horse and moves to join the stack outside of Antayla (7 of 9) (Great place for a Star Trek: Voyager joke, but I can't think of any!).

Worker S of Antayla begins to road.

Cycle through the cities and swap some tiles around.

Two settler complete this IBT. We have a place for one, down by the Incense Colony.

Our vHorse dies to the good health vHorse of Persia (8 of 11).
vArcher hamstrings that vHorse for good and becomes Elite (9 of 12).
No more Persians visible.
One German Archer persishes on the mountain NW of Antayla (10 of 13).
Move vSpear into Antayla, now two defenders here.
Move vSpear from Uskudar to protect wounded vArcher.
Remaining German vArcher has four targets, two fortified vSpears and two eArchers.

German vChariot shows up 1N of Antayla. First time I've seen on of those.

8 0590 BC

Wake vArcher in Uskudar and eradicate the wounded eArcher of Germany (12 of 17).
Send vSpear and wounded vArcher into Uskudar.
Lone eArcher moves onto a road, 3 tiles from the vChariot.
Second road from Istanbul to Antayla complete, Worker mines the grass.

Two Workers meet on the BG north of Iznik.
SettlerToIncense arrives at the grass NE of Incense Colony.
SettlerToSomewhere, which I thought we could use to resettle Japan, stays in Bursa.

Rather quiet right now. Both Antayla and Uskudar have three units. I would like a vSpear on the mountain NW of Antayla, just so nobody else can get there.

So the Archer Army was on the mountain with 4 hp, healed once for 7 hp, but still got attacked by an archer when on the mountain and took 6 hp and was then killed - Is that correct? I thought it would have been unlikely to be attacked with 7 HP on a mountain by an Archer, though sometimes random units attack armies next to a city. I mostly want to know for my own benefit as Archer armies are rare and I want to know what they can and cannot do.

I think it would have been good to keep 2 Spear with the Archer army at all times and stuck to mountains as much as possible. We should do this if we build another.

Ok, I got it.

Roster:
Greebley - Up
markh - On Deck
ThERat
Commando Bob - Just Played
Northern Pike - Away until March

Preturn: Edrine is at +3 food because it is working some Forests. I think it a good idea when towns with bonus food grow to keep them at +4 food. I can see the capitol staying on +3 because it gets 10 shields but not Edrine. Otherwise things look good.

IBT Several Japanese Archers about - 5 total two next to the town.

530 BC: Kill one Japanese Archer and the two Persian units. Attack the German Chariot but it retreats. Cover Archer with a Spear. Science can go down to 50% with Alphabet still in 2.
Notice the fortified Settler and wake it. I think I will settle to the N of Bursa. We want our empire to be thicker than just one city and so need to push toward Germany and Persia.

IBT: 4 Archers next to Tobacco Smoke.

510 BC: Our offensive units in Tobacco Smoke are Injured so I decide to defend. Move a 3rd Spear into the city. Attack Chariot and it retreats again.

IBT: First two Japanese Archers do no damage sending the Spear to Elite. The 3rd kills our new Elite Spear. Another Archer shows up so there are 3 next to our city. We get Alphabet and start Math.

490 BC: Build the city of Somewhere 3 N of Bursa. Kill off the final 3 Japanese Archers. Attack Chariot again and it retreats yet again. We have driven it back 3 squares now. Note the attacking archer has a Spear defending it.

IBT: A German Archer is coming near so the Chariot has escaped. Head back toward town.

470 BC: No units nearby. I am working on more units that I think we need to expand.

450 BC: Spot a Japanese Settler and send a force after it. Only one Japanese Archer in Sight.

430 BC: A Persian warrior Spotted. Intense Incense may be the target of both it and the Jap Archer.

IBT: Well crud. A new color. Purple settler pair They are down near Japan. I think there is a whole section down there.

410 BC: Purple is the dread Iroquois. They are down HBR. They have 13 cities + the captiol and will be our biggest foe. I think they came by land up from the South, but it is possible a boat dropped them and then they moved. If they did come from the south we may have some big battles on the Japanese choke point.
Kill off Settler gaining two workers.

390 BC: Build Salonika, our first coastal city and Ankara near the Jungles/forest. Second Iroquois settler spotted.

370 BC: Kill a German Archer up North.

IBT: Persian Horseman spotted. We need to be more careful now.

350 BC: Attack the Chariot and it retreats from the same poor Archer a fourth time. Fortunately, this time another Archer can kill it

Notes:
We have a little time to set up a choke for the Iroquois units. Fortunately, they did not yet have their UU, but it can't be long.

I would keep Germany and Persia from meeting Iroquois and Japan.

We now have two civs to the North and two to the South. Also lacking Iron is going to make this game very difficult and we may not be able to win. We may want to explore more North for Iron.

I was thinking we should take out Japan first, but now it is looking like we want to go after Germany and Persia first and keep our short front with Japan and Iroquois. The only thing that may save us is the choke to the south. Without that this game would be doomed for sure.

I am hoping there aren't civs behind Germany and Persia. We will be in real trouble then. Unfortunately, this seems very possible and perhaps even likely.

Started a Curragh to find out the shape of the land. I would send one North first to find out about the Germans and Persians. A second south is unlikely to be harmful.

The South:
GR26_BC350.jpg

The North:
GR26_BC350a.jpg

So the Archer Army was on the mountain with 4 hp, healed once for 7 hp, but still got attacked by an archer when on the mountain and took 6 hp and was then killed - Is that correct?
No, not quite.

It was down to 4HP from attacking Kyoto. On that IBT, it was not attacked. On the following turn I moved it from mountain to mountain. During this IBT, still at 4HP, it was attacked and killed. It never got a chance to heal.

Lurker:

I guess you will know better than move a def 1 army while it is yellow now. At least not while it is exposed to attack.

I knew the archer army is weak. At least we got a settler pair and can build the HE now. If we get another army, do we build a horse army?

It will be a while until we get better units without iron. This game might get very tough for a while. We better expand fast.

Oops, just noticed I am up again. What do we research after maths ? The cheapest tech ?

At least one good sign so far is that Hiawatha hasn't showed up with any MWs yet. No immortals either IIRC. Maybe you've caught a break there.

got it, but most likely play this sunday...

This is ugly without iron. We need to find this sooner or later. Maybe we can explore to the north. At least we would know in which direction to expand.

Pre-Turn
MM a little but nth much
we're a little thin on units

IT a new civ shows up, later turns out to be Portugal
Persia attacks and retreats at Uskudar, other units bypass our frontline
this is always the case if our core is weaker defended

1. 130BC
declare on Portugal and defeat 2 Persian archers, 2 horses and 1 German sword
the west is so lightly defended, I switch some builds to spears

IT defeat Persian horse on defense [6-0]

2. 110BC
retreat aginst archer

IT lose spear on defense [6-1]

3. 90BC
more enemies show up and things get dicey already
take out 2 Persian archers [8-1]

IT what a tough turn, but we go 6-1 on defense, lucky RnG [14-2]
we get CB as well, take the next cheapest tech that is mysticism

4. 70BC
get new settler into position, attack with 2 horses but take out 1 Iro archer only
they come in big numbers now

IT a new Civ shows up with a galley..what map is this?
win against 1 archer

5. 50BC
declare war on the Dutch, they are big with 23 cities

IT we go 2-0 on defense, but japan and iro + persia move into our territory

6. 30BC
three cats we have do their job and ping units
take out 1 spear, then 2 Japanese horses and an archer losing a horse

IT we lose 1 exposed archer but defeat 2 Iro archers, only to spot their UU...I think that will spell the end

7. 10BC
defeat wounded Jap horse, lose an archer but take out an intruder spear
take out a red spear from Persia

IT defeat against 4 Iro archers and get MGL in the process
we get mysticism

8. 10AD
I stop here so we can decide what we do with our MGL

I personally am not sure, whether to rush the HE, get a spear or horse army?
Anyway, with so many enemies and no iron this game might be doomed

gr2610.jpg

I think our only hope it to continue to push westward and hope we hit iron. Continue with Settlers and expansion. Stalling will mean death.

I would also build a good number of Catapults to bombard units in mountains. Their attack will be higher than our defense so we want to injure them all which will take Catapult fire power.

I do agree we will probably end up losing, but I want to keep going until it is clear that we are lost. Overrunning the south for example.
