[Graphic Mod] Varietas Delectat v9.2 [civ specific unit sets]

@all: Thanks!

How come this version is 20mb smaller? :)

Yep, at first I was as suprised as you. But then I thought: it has something to do with me changing to a dual core CPU and a better compression ratio;)

is this update savegame breaking??
i loaded an 3.1 VD with MEE 1.0 after i updated it and i had lots of units missplaced. ships where now light tanks and and vice versa.

I'm afraid that the changes done will break old savegames - though I didn't try (since I didn't have time to play...)

ok, well....than it´s a warning for anybody else.

on the other hand....the new units are a good reason for a new game :goodjob:

I solved the ui problem, i had to transfer the mod from the "my games" folder to the civilization folder and it's working. And yes, the update to 3.2 brakes the saved games from the previous version.
I'll test to see if everything's ok.

A truly great and refreshing mod. However, I do have a small complaint (more like an observation). I think it's kind of off that Greek units still look like their ancient counterparts up until (and including in some cases) gunpowder units. The Greek Maceman (Heavy Footman) is like a glorified Spartan hoplite, half-naked and still wearing the ancient helmet. The Knight looks ancient too (strangely enough, I think the Greek Horseman looks more modern than the Greek Knight). The Pikeman looks like a Macedonian Phalanx. Finally the Greek Cuirassier (Heavy Horseman) is STILL wearing an ancient helmet and I'm pretty sure is half-naked too. It just seems odd that the Greek armies look ancient until cannons and muskets arrive, the transition is kind of sudden. I think it would be better if the medieval Greek units looked more like Byzantine units, it's the closest you can get.

But really, no biggie. The mod is awesome!

I guess we find out when Chuggi releases his new mod :) (I hope this happens soon and includes a ton of new units :D )

To be honest I don't mind the ancient greek look. In fact I wish Avain used Bakuel's more ancient egyptian looking rifleman for egypt. I haven't seen anyone use that unit yet. And its very good. Civ4 is a game of what-if not historical fact after all.

I don't like some of the units. :(

No offense, but you're not saying much. There are units I personally don't like - most of which was made by me - and I'm not anywhere as talented as the quality unit makers. If there was a replacement, I'd be more than happy to exchange a couple of units.
Also, please note that I'm open to criticism/suggestions, as I'm in no way the keeper of the "Holy Grail of Diversity".

Sooooooo ? ;)

PS: When is your mod coming out? I can't wait to shamelessly rip it off! :p

I don't want to insult anyone ;) but the praetorian grenadier, all the ancient greek/roman/egyptian units in medieval eras (nothing to do with the quality, just the realism) annoy me. Some of the BTS ethnic units are also not really my style (euro axeman, swordsman, scout, settler and others). There are too many to list but I'm making new versions of most of these units so after I release my mod you can pick and choose what ones you prefer...

I'm going to make a thread soon so people can tell me what they want for cultural diversity, and I'll probably include most of your code from this mod (save me lots of work :) thanks) and I was going to include Seven05's awesome mod, and then some other small stuff. I'm still deciding so it will be a while though. :(

well, given that all those ancient empires no longer existed at that time, we do not know what their units would have looked like.

I am fine with not liking them, everyone is entitled to ones own taste / preferences. Other variants might be more realistic, but they certainly aren't historically accurate either (unless you e.g. consider Italy the successor to Rome, i.e. pick units as they were in the same region but not from the same origin).

which is what we will be doing ;)

Looking forward to it, didn't you say something about a release this month ? this doesn't sound as if it is released that soon to me

That's cool!
Of course, tastes differ, and that's ok. I'm more on mamba's side with what-if units.
As Alexandros wrote, yes, there is an abrupt change and maybe sub-optimal units to represent Greece. But - as there is a separate Byzantine civ, I don't think it's a good idea to add byzantine units to Greeks. The Greeks I'm looking for is a Greece that could have been a major power beside the Byzantines, at the same time - and this can very much happen in civ.

I'm eagerly waiting for the thread and your mod - and not just to shamelessly rip it off as I said previously;)

Yes, but in some cases it's about realism in the very practical sense of the word. No matter how you look at it, the lack of any sort of armor in medieval times (I'm talking about the Greek units now) for the core units of an army just isn't right. It would be acceptable for certain special and/or elite units, but not for the bulk of the army. Also, the use of heavy armor after gunpowder is also strange (Roman praetorian Grenadier - I have not seen this unit, but I can imagine how it looks).
Finally, given that the Byzantine civilisation is actually a merging of Greek and Roman elements (with a Near Eastern twist), we actually do have a pretty good idea of how medieval Greek and Roman armies would look like.

But I do stress that I'm discussing here just for the sake of it. I don't really mind.

Good points, but we mostly lack (better) units to include...

I LIKE the fact that the Egyptians look that way in the medival era and beyond. Avain please listen to my opinion too. I view Civ as what if not as history.

I find it a million times more fun to look at medival ancient egyptian looking guys than to look at arabic lookalikes posing as egyptians like in some ethnic deverse mods. Please Avain do not listen to those who want historical accuracy. Its no fun at all.

Basically what I'm saying is I love all that Chugginator hates with regard to flavor units.
