Graphics/Sound Problems? - Please post your DX Logs.

When the game starts up, the 2k video runs fine, but the game intro is really choppy, both the sound and video. When I'm selecting a player all I can see is their eyes and mouth, and maybe some clothing. In the game, all the tiles are black and all I can see are units, cities, resources, trees and running water. I pressed ctrl-w to get into the world builder and in there I can see the tiles just fine. I played the American Revolution mod and I could see the tiles in it just fine, but again only the leaders mouths and eyes were there during negotiations. I tried playing The Greek World mod but it didnt work either. I guess it's a common issue. Here's my dxdiag:

When I start CivIV all the intro movies just apear as a blue screen and when I get to where the menue should be I see the earth in the back ground but no buttons on it and I have to Ctrl-Alt-Delete to quit.

I realise that I am useing older video card drivers but I need to uses these drivers to prevent proublems with other games that I play. I was hopeing there was a work around I could use.

Thanks for any help.

I have quitting after checking XML. I created another user and it got past that, but stuttered on the opening movie and then showed me the 'fog of war' all the time. And once a unit acted, there was no automatic moving to the next unit. What the heck is going on; what do I need to do? Feel free to email direct to swimeveryday@yahoo.com. TY.

I have this: Intel(R) 82852/82855 GM/GME Graphics Controller (Intel(R) 82852/82855 GM/GME Controller) that apparently is the only system reccomendation that I do not have. Below is the DX log. I'm really confused about what I might need to get. And if you have a good recommendation, can I install it myself rather than paying someone huge bucks to do what is probably a simple thing?

Hello,

I've got quite a few graphics issues with Civ 4. I've updated graphics card driver and changed in game graphics options, neither worked.

- Multicoloured flashing lines/triangles all over the screen (see screenshot 0004)

- Can only see food resource on city screen (see 0004), same thing when controlling settler.

- Can sometimes see land I haven't explored (see 0000)

These happen from the start, I get loads more weird things later in the game. All sorts of graphical quirks, takes ages to end turn, move round map or go from one unit to the other. And it kicks me back to windows and closes every now and again.

Any help appreciated.

From what i've read in these posts i'm having the same graphics problems as a few others. In the game the only things that I can see are my own units and a few resources. Also in the leader's portraits I can only see certain body parts, like teeth and mouths.

The only thing i've tried is tweaking around in the options menu, adjusting the graphics level and the resolution but none of that worked.

Sound seems to be working fine even though the intro video played fine the music kept skipping but I can live with that seeing how the rest of the sound works good.

My DirectX diagnostic is attached. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I had the same problem as you (except I have an NVIDIA 5500). We both had the same version drivers. I downloaded the current drivers for my card (7.1.8.4 - now reads as 6.14.0010.7184 in diagdx) and everything now works fine.

I googled your card and found the following page that will lead you to the most recent driver for your card (version 8.1.8.5 - your current version is 6.14.0010.5664)

Go to http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/win/36168

Hope this works as well for you as it did for me.;)

I was hopeing there would be a work around so I could still use these older drivers. The reason I use these older drivers is because any new drivers produce graphics artafacts when I play Final Fantasy XI. Any possibility there might be one?

I just bought Civ IV yesterday and after completing the install and trying the tutuorial, I noticed a couple of problems. First of all, the faces of all the characters are not showing. All I see are eyes and mouths. The entire rest of their face is missing. Also, when I am zoomed in on the map screen everything is in black. I can see cities, units and resources, but I can't see the terrain at all. It is almost as though the fog of war were everywhere, but when I zoom out, I can see everything just fine. Is it supposed to be this way? From the way it looks, I wouldn't think so, because it doesn't look very good at all.

Anyway, I have a sony VAIO laptop computer, model number PCG-K25. Please let me know whatever other information anyone may require to assist me. I look forward to hearing back from someone. Thank you.

Here is the DirectX diagnotics printout:

Well ... The obvious work around is you install the drivers you want depending on the game you are playing. (Assuming you can find an executable with the drivers that work for FF11). Driver installation takes less then a minute but then you have to reboot. Other that that I can't help you. Civ4 seems to be extremely graphics intensive - I do like what I'm seeing so far, though!

The intro videos and the leader videos in the civ selection work fine. The problem starts in-game. Most of the time non of the leader videos, wonder videos and all the other videos are only black screens (no audio), some times they appear red (no audio), some times choppy and corrupted and the audio skips around, and on a rare oocasion I can see the videos just fine. I've tried the artpack patch and the binkw32.dll file replacement, no changes.

My computer:
AMD Athlon 2400+
512 RAM
WinXP Pro + SP2
ATI Radeon 9600XT AIW 128 MB
Catalyst 5.10

HI,
I'm new to posting messages in forum so please excuse if I make some mistakes.

I'm have the same problems as piqsid, sieberrt, and moossess to name a few. Namely:
1) Terrain-except for forests-is all black except for resources.
2) Leaderheads are only eyes, mouth, and a few other pieces.
3) Sound and video can be choppy.

I've updated the video card (Readon 7500) but that didn't help. What should I do?

I'm still unable to get Civ 4 running. When it starts to load it gets to a certain point and then gives the 'failed to initialise renderer' message and then drops back to the desktop.

First I tried just updating my video drivers and Direct X. Didn't help. Then finding the solution on the 2kgames site here I tried that. I managed to install it but, it did not flow exactly as described. When I got to step 14 and I try to install Civ, I never saw any DirectX install prompts.

Tried to run the game again and got the same error message.

Attached is my dxdiag log.

So, yeah, I also have the black screen with only the units showing. The videos run fine though.
I have a inspiron 5100
2.66GHz
1gig RAM
Radeon 7500 C
Sigma Tel C sound
10gig free memory

They better come up with a solution soon. I really want to play it. I even read the whole manual.

solution for black screen with only units, trees, rivers...

People... I have a top of the line computer with more RAM/SPEED/ROM etc etc etc... than most people do...and a Radeon 9800 Pro... This Damn game would lock up 3-5 minutes into it and kick me to a black screen and I'd have to reboot the whole computer. I tried Catalyst...that didn't work... I tried the old drivers 4.18...that didn't work...I tried moving that damn ART05 file or whatever and that didn't work... I tried re-installing, lower graphics...name it... BUT... I didn't try this fix...

Go to desktop and click properties
Settings
Advanced
SMARTGART

Turn that damn thing off!! Under AGP speed... Take it down to off... Now that thing works great... MY GAME WORKS NOW BECAUSE OF THIS!!! I complained all over the place about how my Radeon 9800 Pro didn't work with the game...Tried EVERYTHING... all the fixes except for this one. And this one actually worked.... I played the Revolutionary War for the last hour with no crashes... Of course...I got my a$$ handed to me, but...I had fun and the game didn't crash... SPREAD THE WORD!! Now I'm not flipping out like I was before---->

Thanks to whoever found this... I forgot where the post was... Dammit!

works fine with my radeon 7500aiw

a big thanks to Thrasher0723

time to play now

Dear all,

When I start the game, the programme told me to check the version of DirectX and check the graphic setting and I do not know what I can do.

Please find the attached DX logs for your information! Please help!!!

just got the game and this is my first time posting on here about it. i dont get any CTD when im playing what i do get is a stuttering sound and video when starting. i currently have to game graphics set to med cause that seemed to help with a few things. the map and everything starts out ok but after awhile, usally after ive opened an advisor or other sub screen, the map becomes very dark to the point of being hard to see. sometimes the trees all disappear or ill part of a leader head. ive added new drivers and that didnt do anything for it that ive noticed. im running a GF 5200fx 512k. it wont let me upload the dxlog as i have done that before.

ok i have the same problems as many others: Game slow down rather quickly. Very quickly and annoying on huge maps. Did some correction in display/Graphical settings based on advices here but i doesnt realy move things. A patch is what is needed i guess.
