Hello there

I am new, I am french and I post my problem :mischief:

Well, the fist probleme was the french edition required a DVD rom I had not, then I bought one and so I begin to play.

The probleme : my computer crash and reboot, when windows is booted it display a message about my card which did not manage to finish drawing...

The fist time it did I was in 1280*1024; best graphic mode and Cid was about to explain me the tutorial but the game map never appeared

I precise that I made two tests in 1280*1024 with the LOW graphics settings and this porblem did not appear anymore

My configuration :

Athlon 2000 XP (the problem is that actually my system told me it is a 1.25 GHZ and I don't see why  because it's a 2GHZ, must have modified something but I do not know what...

Graphic Card : Winfast A250 LE Myvivo display adapter (Geforce4 TI 4200)
758 MB RAM

I have corrected the processor problem (I was in 100 Mhz instead of 133 in the bios).

and I was wrong, My processor speed is 1.67 Ghz.... perhaps it explained whay I should lower the graphics ?

ok, my problem is the stuttering movies, the black wont go away, and the leader bodies dont appear..maybe my computer is the problem, have a look at this.

View attachment system2.bmp

View attachment display3.bmp

thats from the display and system tabs on the diagnostic thing...also i ran the testdirect draw and testdirect 3d, and they both came out with no problems. i dont know if thats valuable information but there you go...i hope somone can help me

I have an odd problem when I run Civ.... not only do I get the studdering video and audio on the intro movie as many others have, but I'm also experiencing what I think is a more unique problem. I may be wrong and this second problem may be a result of my own stupidity since I am not very knowledgable when it comes to these types of things.... The game will load fine (other than the intro video) and I will be ready to play except the whole map, except for my units, cities, and resources, will be pitched-black even within my line of sight. Every once in a while, there will be a patch of normality where I will be able to see the terrain as it should be, but the rest of the map remains black. When I scroll, I can see different parts of the terrain on this one patch on the left side of my screen (It is almost like a hole in a black veil), but nothing else. Also, when I see a leader in animated form, all I can see are their eyes and their teeth. Is this all just a result of my graphics cardnot being sufficient? I do not know what to check to see what is the cause of the problem. Can someone offer me some help?

I managed to solve my 'Failed to Initialize Renderer - Check DirectX Version and Graphics Settings' problem tonight after getting the game earlier today.

I have an Dell XPS Laptop with a Radeon 9800 graphics card running XP.

From earlier in this thread, I found this link

http://www.2kgames.com/civ4/support_ati.htm

It had step by step directions in it, which I followed. Personally, I don't think that any updating of the graphics drivers or uninstalling the game did anything for me. I believe I already had the latest drivers, but did it anyway.

After doing that, it still didn't work and the file continued to say "get the PakBuild.zip" file from the 2k Support site and has a link there to get it for XP users and another link for Win2k users.

It tells how to unpack it, but the directory was wrong for me. I installed in the default directory, but chose a single user install, not for everyone. I had to turn on the option to 'view hidden files' in the Explorer windows and found out where the game was installed by looking at the properties of the shortcut.

Basically it's c:\Documents and Settings\My Name\Application Data\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Assets

The pak file is there and after selecting the file, you again have to, in a new explorer window, navigate all the way to the assets folder again and then it actually extracts the file. It took a couple of minutes on a 3.4G 1GB RAM computer and just kind of ended without saying it was done.

After it was done, according to the directions, I had to cut (not copy) and paste the pak file one directory higher in the tree (i.e. c:\Documents and Settings\My Name\Application Data\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4).

I then ran the game again and the opening movie played flawlessly. I'm done for the evening on it, but tomorrow I'll actually try and play the game and see what happens.

For all of you who just got new drivers, maybe they added stuff to this link later. I don't know, but it worked for me and hopefully it will help other "Failed to Initialize Renderer" people.

Good luck all. I'll check back tomorrow to see if I messed up any of this. It's late and I'm really tired.

Lyf

As with a great many others I suffer from an excess of 'fog of war'.
When I choose the leader I cna only see the disembodied headress, eyes, and mouth. Nothing else!
In addition once in the game I can see no map, just the units upon it. I had a very similar problem withe map on 'Rome: Total war' I'm not sure if that's relevant but thought the team might want to converse with the people working on that.

While trying to increase the stability of the game, I set WinXP SP2 to optimize RAM usage for the System Cache {Start - Settings - Control Panel - System: Advanced - (Performance) Settings - Advanced - (Memory Usage): System Cache}. This caused the loading of my late-game autosave to take very long (I Ctrl-Alt-Del after ~10 minutes) with a very sluggish computer (Alt-Tab to the previously opened Task Manager takes minutes). The Civ-exe allocated more than 1 GB of (partially virtual) memory. With Memory Usage set to "Programs", the Civ-exe needs only ~480 MB and the loading time of that autosave is under 1 minute.

My PC:
Abit IS7-E2 with 2.6 GHz P4 and 1 GB RAM
ATI Radeon 9600 Pro
On-board AC'97 sound
WinXP SP2 with all security updates
ATI driver package 5.10 (control panel version)
AntiVir Guard is active
Civ4 international version (bought in Germany)

The game installed just fine and starts without problems. The wonder-movies suffer from choppy sound.
I have crashes to desktop or rebooting on average once an hour.

I hope this fixes somebody's problems, keep on trying!

Hello I'm new here...:wavey:

I have a sound problem: The sound is very very slow... When I started the tutorial sid said ''Welcome to civilization four'''. It took him 5 minutes to say that!!!

I asked about this at another forum, and they said I should download a driver or something, but they didn't tell what a driver is, which one I need, and where I can download one.

What can I do to solve the problem?
:help:

Edit: (I only have the demo)

Here's my DXlog...I think.

As someone who doesn't know that much about computers this has been incredibly difficult. I've tried almost everything and even thought I'd found a potential solution only to have my laptop freeze up every time I try to start a new game.

I really hope someone can get to the bottom of this. If I can't play this game I think I'm going to cry...

Civ works perfectly fine for me in full screen mode. I've been one of the lucky ones in that regard.

I play many hours of Civ, so I'd really like to use windowed mode, so my other windows can be visible as well. Unfortunately, windowed mode is just terribly slow for me. The movies are slow, the game play is not at all smooth. It's like the refresh rate in window mode is once every 2 seconds. Anybody else encounter this problem? I encounter it in the original boxed version, and in the 1.09 patch.

My hardware info:
- Athlon 64
- ATI Radeon X800

I have the latest graphics drivers from ATI and the proper version of DirectX installed.

I've attached my dxdiag.txt. Any help would be appreciated.

I've just downloaded the v1.09 patch, hoping it would fix my problem of black terrain and no leader faces, but there's absolutely no improvement. DXlog attached.
I am assuming problem is with my graphics chip, as I have integrated chipset.

Also, game is now telling me that my computer is not up to spec (never used to say this before patch), despite the fact that I have the following:

Windows XP SP2
P4 2.8 GHz processor
480MB RAM
And plenty of HD space.

Game sets screen resolution to 1024 x 768. I have set all graphic options to low.

Would be good to understand problem soon.

I am an nvidia user with CTD and lockup problems. Happens about every 10-25 turns or 2min - 2hours into playing a map. As the map gets more crowded it seems to happen more often.

System: p4 3.2ghz, i875p mb, GeForce 5900 Ultra, SB Audigy2 ZS, 1 gig ram

  • Updated to 1.09
  • Running process at high priority
  • Running with pixel shader 1.1 instead of default 1.4
  • In-game options such as clear cache, minimum detail, no sound, etc.

I also have a link to a crash dump file that was output when civ crashed.

BLACK TERRAIN!
I can see leaderheads, units, cities, forests, jungles, flood plains, waves moving, and can zoom pretty well, why can't I see normal terrain??
Even if I have a SIS 650 video card, I'd expect my P4 laptop to run this game, like it does with some many others...

i was having the problem and didn't really try anything to solve it since RL didn't allow me to play the game anyway. today i got a little time and found that the patch is out. i installed the patch and the game runs great. :) problem solved!
but it's strange i always get a message that my system doesn't meet the minimum requirement message. but it still runs well.

My main problem is the graphics. All the leaders show up as floating eyes and mouths and the scenery is dark to an almost black extent. Everything else runs fine so far...

The patch has made the wonder videos start and stop playing (audio too). It plays a couple seconds then stops, then waits for around 5 seconds then starts again. Sound is pretty random.

The wonder movies played fine before the patch, although near the end of a game I did start hearing audio 'pops' during the playback. Video was always fine though.

First time Poster (I think...) Long time reader...

Problem:My screen often freezes just as all features of the map disappear (roads, improvements, units, cities, etc.) After a few minutes, the game will either resume or it'll crash to the desktop. The desktop's resolution at this point has been reduced to 800x600 and is a little off-color. This problem happened incessantly with the ongoing game I had, so I started a new one after the patch and it's starting all over again...

My actions:
Updated my video driver.
Closed all other applications while playing
Read a LOT of forums :)

Anyone else seen this problem? Maybe I'm misreading posts, but I couldn't see if tanyone else has had this problem...

I am about at the end of my rope with this program. I have loved all the Civ games, but I am tired of trying to get this one to work. I am trying to play the game on any map over standard size and all I get is jerky graphics. I run the game in 1024 x 768 with all the settings on low, and the damn game is still jerky.

Athlon 2900+
1 Gig of memory
Geforce 6800 128 mg
Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS Platinum

I can run about every game I have with all the graphic settings turned up with no problem, but no not with this game. I really want to play the 18 Civ mod on a huge world map, but it is too jerky to play. I have turned off the sounds, turned off the graphics that show resources and stuff and it is always jerky when I try to scroll around the world. Is there any way to fix this? I have read many threads on 4 different boards on this problem, but nothing I read ever fixes the problem. I am about to remove this game from my hard drive and write off Firaxis as a game company to avoid.

Any way, if anyone knows how I can fix this it world be greatly appreciated. I am fed up.
