Graphics/Sound Problems? - Please post your DX Logs.

Civ IV (v1.52) still either freezes up with a loud noise through the speakers and requiring a hard boot, or CTD with errors saying 'Your system has run out of video memory' followed by a 'run time error'. This happens randomly, whether I'm on my 5th turn of a new game, or (more often) late in the game. All graphics settings low, low res textures.
Having just given up playing Civ IV until a new patch comes out, (sick of rebooting 50 times a day) I decided to play some old games. Installed Civ III Conquests -can't get five minutes of play in without the same noisy freeze-up as with Civ IV. Installed Risk II - exactly the same problem. Now I'm wondering whether to uninstall Civ IV and see if these older games work, or uninstall the NVidia driver v81.98 and use an older driver. My system has been through the mill this past month so I can virtually eliminate any hardware fault or lack of sufficient cooling/air flow.
System: AMD Athlon 64 4000+, MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum m/b, GeForce 7800GTX 256mb card, 2Gig RAM.
Has anyone else had the same Civ IV problems reoccuring in other games?

The game itself actually runs fine for me, at least so far, but outside of the intro (where it sounds a bit choppy) I have NO sound or music at all. When I exit to the desktop, I occasionally get a burst of ambient sound, like birds or water, just before the game exits, but it won't play at all during the game.

Im running:

AMD Athlon 64 300+ w/1G RAM
WINXP w/SP 2
ATI Radeon 800XT w/256 Ram
SB USB extigy (Which the settings menu finds just fine for a voice chat device, but apparently won't actually talk to during the game)
DX9.0c, plus all the most recent drivers I could find.

DXdiag.txt attached.
(edit):

No, it's not, because I already posted it in another thread dedicated to specifically this problem, and the forum system won't let me attach it again. PLease look at my pot in the "Odd sound problems" thread for the Log.

Hi, my Civ4 kept crashing in the midst of game play with the error msg that I've ran out of video memory

I'm using a ATI Mobility Radeon x300 with 64 mb of video memory. Does anyone else have the same problem?

I've attached my DX diagnostics file. Thnx..

i was having these problems until i replaced my video card.
it's a 3D Fuzion 3DFR55256P Geforce FX5500 256MB 128-bit DDR PCI Video Card. after i installed this card and went into the bios to ensure the video mem was correct (not trying to still use the onboard video mem), i haven't had a problem. i ordered it from newegg.com. it cost $80 but i exceed the requirements of the game. if this game requires 128 as many are starting to then i think it would be a good idea to go ahead and get 256 so next year i will have enough to play any new games that come out.

I just retired my old PC (upgrade-card 1 GHz tualatin P3/512MB/Radeon 7000 PCI card) because things were just too slow to really play Civ4 well (not that it stopped me from trying since I got the game after doing a pre-order on-line). You are all familiar with the usuals I'm sure -- I never could watch any of the movies, had to turn down the graphics options, & game play got horribly slow (hour between turns on a huge map w/ many civs). I just built up from new/hand-me-down parts a new box to play the game. But I'm still having problems with Civ4 (patched to current version). Some of the saved games I did on my old machine result in an immediate crash on my new machine (Athlon64 venice 3500+/1G/Radeon 9550 128MB 8x-agp). That is also true of large map files in the editor. And it is also true if I am playing a larger map game around the 1500AD point. The error is usually about exhausting video memory. Some times I do get a crash to desktop w/o the renderer error about vid. memory. Rarely I get a crash that results in a reboot (without the intermediate BSOD), but that too has happened. This is arguably worse than on the old machine! (even though on that one it would always take me many days to finish a full game because of the ever-increasing inter-turn churn)

I was wondering if there was some general advice on how to make this function better. I thought maybe there was some switch (I recall the harkonnen memory fix thread prior to the new patch talking about something like this) to tell it to swap out to my more plentiful RAM and not crap out when the 128MB of vid. memory is used up.

I also thought maybe if I dialed down the graphics again that might?? help. (too bad, it was nice to actually see the movies even if I do still get the random stutter).

Is the real answer dropping another US$180 or so on an even more powerful video card w/ more memory?

Or is this something I just need to wait for another patch to fix?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

#1
I've installed 1.52 patch but game would crash whenever I clicked on Play (screen with leader). Message was "Runtime Error! Firaxis Games\Sid Meier Civilization4\Civilization4.exe" followed by "The app has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way." Noticed the XML wasn't cached during loading.

#2
Managed to get 1.52 to load and play by changing Configuration file (MemSaver=0, Disable Caching=0). XML now shows cached when loading. Same as prior to patch except I've noticed units just disappear (e.g. 5 spearmen in a city one turn, none the next).

#3
Can anyone tell me how to open Civilization4.bak file? One suggestion to cure the run out of memory problem was to change line 167 in this file. I've found the file but have no idea what to associate it with in order to open.

We always reboot before starting a game, so no other memory hogs or background apps except standard ones are running. Have latest drivers and run an anti-virus and defrag prior to patch install.

System is XP2 (Service pack 2), Intel P4 2.8, 512 ram, 64mb ATI RADEON 9200 (driver 6.14.10.6374), resolution 1024x768, 32 bit at 96dpi, 768mb virtual mem paging file

I just got a new computer. When I tried to run Civ 4, half my screen is just noise for lack of a better term. It's just a total scramble of white noise. Tried reinstalling game, made sure the drivers were up to date, still can't figure out what is going on. This is my system info. The main reason I got this computer was because my old one was barely able to run it (outdated graphics etc) It would break my heart if I couldn't play it on this machine. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

i have a problem with sis 741 32mb integrated graphic card...game are loading, but terrain doesnt apear...terrain is all black, units and other graphics are fine...anybody can help me?

serb_pagan: Your graphics card just isn't good enough. Your best bet is to go with a 256MB card.

My question: If I disable Powerstrip from loading at boot, will it cause any problems with my graphics card/performance? Powerstrip has a 30-second timer on boot that can only be disabled by registering. If you want to make me not register, try to make me do it like this. I'd rather delete it. So... is that safe?

Ok I am getting into the game about 3 turns or about 5 minutes of play and the game freezes. I have dumbed everything down updated all drivers and have done normal windows troubleshooting. I have followed the fixes under the other thread still no go. I have not install the omega drivers nor the 411 ati drivers. I dont want to change my drivers as this will effect Battlefield 2 playabliity. Here is an edit and shortened version of my DXDiag. (see below)
I would appreciate the help.

Hey, The only problem I have is while playing civ 4 an error pops up saying " civ4 has encounted a problem and needs to close"

Dxdiag file attached.

Any help would be great,

I got Civ4 as a Xmas gift, but after struggling with 2k's tech support for several weeks, completely gave up on getting it functional.

I've got the same sound delay in the opening movies mentioned by others on page 1, but that's not a big issue. The big problem is that when I actually go to play the game, there's no terrain. All of the opening menus work fine, but once a world's been made, 70-90% of the terrain is just black. Sometimes odd patches will be visible (sometimes with distorted color, sometimes not); sometimes just rivers, resources, and cities. Units are sometimes gone, sometimes not. Sometimes leader portraits don't display correctly. The coloration on menus gets screwed up, too. The extent varies slightly based on the graphics settings; low settings perform marginally better (but still nowhere near playable). Attached are a screenshot, taken at low settings, and my diagnostic file.

My system, as far as I can tell, hits recommended requirements in every department except graphics card (nvidia geforce3 ti 200), but even that's within the minimum range, so the game should function.

I've already tweaked every option I can find, both in-game and with my PC. Any suggestions?

I'll attack my dxdiag, but I'll just tell you the spec of my comp. Everything is above or at the min and rec specs except the video card, which is 32 mb. I know that this will cause it to crash and will make it slow down. But I discoved that I could play multiplayer without any problem, and play single with only 4 people on a small map. Wasn't quite sure if other people were able to have these kinds of results with low graphics card.

Hello
I have a problem with grafic of civ 4
when scenario starts, I can see my units, trees, animals on the map, but I don't see terrian, I can't see if terrian is plains, grass, mountins, or any other - instead all I see is black.
I don't know where is problem
I have amd athlon xp 2000+, gecube radeon 9550 xt extreme 128 mb ddr(drivers from 16.june.2005. year),
1 gb ddr 400mhz.
Please help.

Nvidia have released new drivers, http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_84.21.html

Fixes relating to Civ4:
- Blue screen crash when starting a new game with AA enabled in the nvidia control panel. (GeForce 6600 SLI)
- Texture corruption when zooming out. (GeForce 7800 GTX/GT, GeForce 6800).

Plus some other system fixes that might make the game more stable. Just thought I let everyone know.

I have problems with a black background. I cannot see the graphics of the game. What shall I do?
