hmm...

They probably did NOT know about some of the bugs, because they can't possibly test everything on every possible hardware configuration known to exist.
but that's the thing...the problems exist on such a wide variety of configs that how could they NOT have run across it. you don't believe all the developers, at all the companies involved, use exactly the same machines with the same specs??? you know that's simply not the case.

Now, keeping SALES as the major driving force in mind, they could have released the game in the week before Thanksgiving like originally planned, and let pretty much the same code be buggy between Thanksgiving and Christmas, possibly influencing sales because people get cranky about stuff not working.....
hmmm, cranky about things not working. likely b/c they expect them to work???

OR..... they could have released a month before Thanksgiving, let everyone complain about all the bugs in November, and have a patch ready before Thanksgiving weekend when the biggest sales are going to be.
I am betting they are going to release a patch in the week before thanksgiving, or maybe even a little sooner, that fixes all major problems (that are actually fixable in the code, there are many user issues as well) known so far, which means they will have a GOOD working Civ 4 in all of the month of December and beyond, instead of releasing just before December and it taking till Christmas or after Christmas to get the patch out.
the logic about sales, christmas, and timing of the patch assumes that potential consumers actually check out the product before they buy!!! were you a general shmoo, you'd likely walk into the nearest EB, see Civ IV, say "holy crap! a new civ??" and buy it. or ask someone else to buy it for you. IF you went so far as to check out reviews for the game, you'd see nothing (ha! c'mon...nothing!?!?!) regarding bugs. so....that the game is buggy has little if any influence on NEW customers buying the game running up to xmas -- seriously, when have you ever heard any media (mass/pop) tell moms, dads, consumers "better wait before plunking down your money for that new civ IV game everyone is hot after. there are apparently a few problems with the game that prevent some users from enjoying this computer classic. so, better to wait until a fix is issued and in the meantime, buy little jimmie a pogo-stick. now over to phil with sports."....right!
at least, in the minds of the publishers, they couldn't care less about timing OTHER than the simple fact that the sooner civ IV hit the shelves, the sooner they got paid. to them, a patch coming out in december (pre holiday) is irrelevant. may as well be march, or may.
bottom line, all the speculation about WHEN a patch may arrive and WHY is just that, speculation.
