Vh1 just ran a special about the 200 Greatest Pop Culture Icons.
EDIT: here is the link Top 200 Pop Culture Icons

Their Top 3 were:

3. Elvis
2. Superman
1. Oprah Winfrey

So who do you think were the top 3? Or top 10? or top 100 if you dont have a life?

(remember, the characters can be artificial, because characters like Mickey Mouse, Batman, Bart Simpson, and Cher ;) were on the list)

I'm surprised Super Mario isn't on that list. Statistically he was more popular than Mickey Mouse. But then, was Mickey even there either?

Oprah was no. 1 !?!?! holl cow!...no way..I'm shocked..I thought the simpsons or something like that were going to be no. 1

I could not believe number 1 was Oprah. It's ridiculous. Sorry, but pop culture is not limited to daytime TV for bored housewives and smarmy magazines. That's the worst number 1 on any list I've ever seen.

Oprah @&!#'in Winfrey. Al Bundy would go postal. Was he even on the list??

Aside from that, it's a good list of 200 famous people. Will Smith should have been way higher, and Britney should have been way lower. Elvis should have been #1. Hell, he started pop culture as we know it.

Aerosmith is on the list. Hilarious. Actually beat Led Zeppelin, The Fonz, Clint Eastwood, Batman, and Dimaggio.

Mickey Mouse over Bugs Bunny? That's just sick.

My top 5 -

Superman
Michael Jordan
Marilyn Monroe
The Beatles
Elvis

Friends rank higher than the BEATLES? Madonna ranks higher than Michael Jordan? Marilyn Monroe and I Love Lucy rank below Tom Cruise? Wonder Woman ranks higher than Scooby Doo? What kind of idiot came up with this list?

EDIT: Further ranting, I also like how:

-Ricky Martin ranks higher than Batman, Spider-Man, and Harry Potter

-Mister Rogers is apparently a bigger pop icon than Bruce Lee

-Whoopi Goldberg and Judy Garland barely rank in the bottom 80

-Charlie Chaplin ranks even lower, 126 - sandwiched in between Calvin Klein and Stevie Wonder.

-Alfred Hitchcock DOES apparently merit a better place on the list than Justin Timberlake - by ONE digit.

-Charlie Brown and Aretha Franklin round out the top HUNDRED?

-Clint Eastwood only deserves 110th place?

:vomit:

Madonna ranks higher than Michael Jordan?

Come on now, Madonna is an international superstar, Michael Jordan is only big in the USA really. She's been around for nearly two decades, Jordan was only a star for a few years, 10 tops.

Still, one caveat to this list is that more recent stars will rank higher because more people are familiar with them.

Take this survey 20 years from now, the Beatles will surpass Friends, I can guarantee you that.

Donald Rumsfeld isn't even on there. Who died and made these morons authorities on pop culture?

As usual, the list focuses too much on recent events, and as usual they have wierd choices, resulting from having few people deciding about the list (what is princess diana doing there?). BTW aren't McDonnalds and Coca Cola international icons of pop culture as well?

The Simpsons deserve a place in top 20. Kick out Britney Spears !

Yep. And I guess the vast majority here doesn't even know Oprah Winfrey...

Is it true that Oprah has made around $1 billion ?

You're kidding right?

I've sat quietly while people bashed the list with well thought arguments that basically amount to "I think <insert name here> sucks" but this one I have to respond to.

Like her or not (and for the record, I was indifferent to her) you have acknowledge the fact that she was loved by millions and millions of people the world over. The entire world mourned her death. She had a huge influence on popular culture from the time she married Charles until her death. Everyone knows who she is and knows something about her.

As for Oprah Winfrey ... she has been called the richest woman in the world, although I always thought Queen Elizabeth was. She is at the very least the richest woman in the US, and yes, she is a billionaire. Yes, her claim to fame is a talk show. A talk show that is aired in 104 countries. In addition, there is her magazine and the shows she produces. She owns 90% of a company with $300 million in revenues. I like her less than I liked Diana, but again you have to acknowledge the huge influence she has had on the world.

I don't say that she isn't famous (although not as much as you think...) but what does she has to do with popular culture?

Good thing she never cought on in Romania. I remember a few years ago they tried to introduce Jerry Springer on some TV station, but it soon failed. However, for about a year a Johnny Carso-like show was very popular around here...

Again, you're kidding right? Do yourself a favour and research her life a little bit. You might learn that the entire world watched her every move. You might learn that little girls all over the world wanted to be her. You might learn that she was actively involved in many charitable causes. You might might learn that she had quite a lot to do with popular culture.

What makes you think so many people around the world even cared about her during her life? I can tell you that in Israel people didn't follow her and a week after her death she was forgotten. And in any case what does her popularity has to do with pop culture?
