Greatest Sneak Attacks

Sign a right of passage with the AI, position your troops next to every AI core city, and when the right of passage expires, attack. I has worked several times for me.

After reading some of your sneaky stories, all of my games seem pretty boring in compare because I have never sneak-attacked anyone. I have never launched any nuke against any one either.:(

My tactic is very boring...first declare war (if they don't declare, I will; one way or another, war will be declared). Then I wait for a few turns for them to throw their best shots at me. When they run out of ammo, it will be my turn to match forward to wrap up the war.

But you will suffer a rep-hit every time you do this.

I don't *do* sneak attacks. I just send the SoD at the enemy cities and pray to the RNG.

That's a fave trick of the AI, too. Something similar happened in my first game with about five enemy infantry next to my capital and I had 12 tanks next to his biggest cities. We both tried the same trick on each other.

Let me get this straight...you nuked them...

So...how is that a sneak attack? They weren't expecting it obviously, but ICBMs were designed to blow up cities halfway accross the world undetected.
Yeah, that wasn't really a sneak attack.

What I'm about to describe may not necessarily qualify as one too, but here goes:

I had this civ as a thorn in my flesh for many centuries already. It was sandwiched between two halves of my great Babylonian empire. So, I silently began building tons of bombers, stealth bombers and paratroopers.

Then, in one fell swoop, I bombarded all their cities until each city did not have even a single defender left. Next I paradropped paratroopers beside each of their cities. The next turn I bombarded again whatever defenders they managed to built in that one turn and then took all of their cities. I wiped out the Sumerians in two turns without breaking an ROP, due to supreme air power. :D

Not if u cancel the ROP( with troops still there) and then attack them. The agreement would be over.

You would still get an ROP rep hit if you don't have an ROP. The AI will refuse to sign ROPs with you if you ever declare war with units in the enemy territory. It also makes a lot more sense this way.

does a defensive sneak count?
can't remember the civs involved, but someone sent a fleet of transport capable ships (galleons I think) at my main continent with a large invasion force and only a few escorts. I had purposely been building lots of subs just for the heck of it and was able to intercept the enemy fleet just before they reached my land. they didn't have any sub detecting ships so I was able to shadow them while I moved in subs from all over. Their fleet never encountered a visible unit of mine on their little trip so the AI (if it's smart enough) probably thought they would be the ones sneak attacking

In one game I played, I had ships loaded with knights off the coast of a small, weak civ. I unloaded units next to all of their cities, they told me to leave, and I ignored. The next turn, I destroyed every city and they were out of the game.

The large but backwards arabs sent two stacks of 25 archers and spearmen all the way down through portugal and greece to attack me. Fortunately for me, I was just in a war with greece and had two armies of knights and about 20 other units in that city. I slaughtered every one of them as they slowly crept across the deserts and floodplains around that city. later, I moved my two armies into arab land and spent 30 turns pillaging every single square of theirs. Largest sneak attack -probably also largest single battle- I had ever seen (also, one of the only times I've ever seen the AI organize their troops in large stacks).

Actually, the last game I played I sneak attacked the Celts. They had the unfortunate starting position of being located on an island that could only support 8 cities. Even more unfortunately, they built 5 of those cities on the coast. And most unfortunately of all, they had some dyes that I didnt have, but clearly wanted.

Also very unfortunate was the fact that I was dying to try a sea attack using marines, which I had never done before. And another unfortunate thing in this tale of unfortunate things was the fact that there was only a 2 tile space between my fortunate mainland and their unfortunate island.

So I started mass producing marines and meanwhile sent all my transports down to the edge of the mainland, and then loaded all the transports full of marines. I expected very little resistance so I had no support for the transports.

Oh and the other unfortunate thing was that I had previously taken one of their cities on the coast so I had a foothold. But unfortunately for me I couldnt access all the cities in a single turn from my foothold. Thats why I decided on the marines.

My whole goal was to take the entire island in a single turn. So I stationed transports off the coast of all 5 cities, just outside his cultural border, and then tried to provoke him into a war by demanding outrageous things, like he hand over all his cities to me immediately. Unfortunately he wouldnt bite, which i didnt expect him to, so I was forced to declare war. It went off without a hitch and I wiped out the entire island in a single turn using my marines.

Unfortunately for ME it threw the entire globe into World War One. I did not expect that to happen as only one other nation (Arabia) had a mutual protection pact with the Celts, but as soon as they declared they immediately signed up Spain as well so I had to fight a war on two continents. But my good buddies the furious Koreans and the furious Carthagenians were only too willing to fight once I bribed them with some extra fur and incense I had lying around.

In the end it was a victory and I learned that marines do indeed have some usefulness. I shall most certainly use them again against coastal cities.

How else do you take cities on islands other than marines? ;)
