Hi there, as you can see i'm a newly registered member of the forums and wanted to introduce myself really quick. I'm currently a high-school student and am into Civilization III (Have been for a while). I've known about CivFanatics since I was first researching for screenshots and information on Civ 3, but never signed up for the forums.

Some of my interests include building computers, playing Massive Multiplayers (Asheron's Call 2, Planetside, EverQuest II), First-Person Shooters (Unreal Tournament (s), Halo (2), Splinter Cell), Strategy (StarCraft, Civ 3), and listening to Alternative Rock (LostProphets, Linkin Park). Oh yeah, and i'm a student...yippee...

So now a few newb-ish questions.

1) What are some good scenarios to practice harder difficulties (3rd level and up)

2) Are there Multiplayer Civ teams and if so does anyone know of any?

3) What characteristics for a civilization do you guys reccommend (Personally I always require an Industrius civilization but i've never decided on the other qualification).

Nice to meet all of you!

Welcome to CivFanatics.com! [party]

You should introduce yourself in the Off-Topic forum but i guess its fine.

For your questions:

1) If you have Conquest play the Conquest/Scenarios. If you have vanilla civ3 or PTW go to the Scenario section to download some of the scenarios. Also you can download mods. they are enhancements to the game and can change the game radically. Try Rise and Rule, Rhye's of Civilization, Master of Myorr, Warhammer Mod 2.0, and other things you like their.

2) Go to the Multiplayer and PBEM game section to find groups. Or go to myleague.com to setup a multiplayer game.

3) It really depends on what your playing. For epic games i think you may like the Agricultural trait. Try the Mayans out. This is for the Conquest. If you have Play the World than play as the Celts. If you have vanilla Civ3 play as the Rome. These are civs i personally like. it really depends on you.

Hope your questions are answered and welcome to civfanatics.com.

Hi, there is an arriving thread in Off Topic, but this is civ related...I'll leave it up to the mods to decide where it goes. :)

1) I suggest sticking with the Epic (regular) game. The rules are balanced, and a random start and random everything is important for learning the game.

2) Yes there are. You can try a google search or check out the Multiplayer and Play by Email forums here at CFC (you need Play the World or Conquests for multiplayer, though).

3) Industrious is very nice. Also, I like Scientific and Commercial, as I am a pacifist, and they come in very handy. It differs for your playing style though. If you have lots of wars, then Militaristic is nice. If you switch governments a lot, maybe Religious is for you. It also depends on your settings (ie; commercial for a big map is a good idea).

Welcome to CFC. :)

You should try playing a random civ when you play. It's good to get a feel for what they're all like, and it makes things more interesting playing different civs all the time. I used to have a preference, but I like it better now that I get a random game.

Welcome! Not to sound harsh to anyone (scenario makers) but scenarios are not the way to go. If you want to get good at the game, the main game is the way to go, not to scenarios. Actually they make you form bad habits and most of the time make you worse at the game.

Also, the AI isn't geared up to really play many of the scenarios well. There's a number of victory conditions that it really doesn't know how to win. They're designed more for online play than single player.

Thanks for all the great tips guys, i'll keep them in mind. I've been cruising the forums looking at strategies (City Placement, How to manage money, units, expansion strategies) and their all incredible! I know they must have been a lot of work, but their incredibly useful and I think have a really good effect on my game (I particularly liked the Four rules of wonders, forgot who made it but I am wonder crazy and am really toning it down)!

Thanks!

While I normally play a fully random game, I would think that the true "student of the game" would want to pick and chose his civs from game to game, just to see how each trait plays.

That's why playing a random game is good, it forces you to try all the different civs and learn their strengths and weaknesses.

Welcome !

1) scenarios are there : http://forums.civfanatics.com/forumdisplay.php?f=75
I am not sure they are very good for improving your general skills since they are different from the epic and tricks in one cannot be used in the other. On the other hand it is a good way to practice new kind of warfares and discover new eras.

2) try http://www.myleague.com/civ3players/ They are probably the best to have serious online gaming.
On the other hand it is mostly aggressive 100-turn games and different from the epics.
Other possibility, PBEM. Our part of the forum (http://forums.civfanatics.com/forumdisplay.php?f=90) is quite active and we play most games to the end (which allows for a real development, for real strategy and diplomacy), especially scenarios since epics (especially with 8 humans) can really take ages.
We play most of the Conquests (except for Fall of Rome but that should change soon), + user-created ones (US Civil War, WWI, WWII, Great Armada) + mods (RaR, seafaring)...

3) No preferences. Depends on my mood. And I like the idea of not depending on a trait to win.
