Yeah Yeah, I know, poor little jackreese on Monarch level....
I admit I'm not a seasoned veteran like most of you guys but..
I gotta moan and complain about those dam Mayans,Americans, and Incas.
It kinda stinks when you don't even get Steel in your territory. And when your really behind the eightball clawing and micromanaging your nads off to pray for saltpeter.(Gunpowder tech) Then when you pull out every trick in the book and there is no SALTPETER either!!!!!! Also, when your one turn away from saltpeter...Then the THIRD civ decides to attack you for the heck of it!
ARRRRGGGGHHHH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have never found "Steel" either, but I find iron most of the time ;)

Steel: An alloy of iron, containing various amounts of carbon, manganese, and one or more other elements, such as sulfur, nickel, silicon, phosphorus, chromium, molybdenum, and vanadium. These elements, when combined with iron, form different types of steels with varying properties.

duh you know what he means, dont take the piss

Longbows + Trebuchets + Spearmen + Maybe Horses = Enough for you to get iron or saltpepper

I have been there, in my recent game(on Emperor) I didn't have iron, saltpeter or rubber. Yet through some strategic trading and well plannned wars I was able to obtain all of them, so it can be done.

I agree Siddhartha.
I pulled every trick/negotiating tactic in the book, but to no avail.
Very irritating to micromanage every maneuver and come out a loser. With regards to my game, iron was never available to me. I constantly checked the 3 other Civs for extra iron. I wish I could have MADE them road to there extra iron but that is impossible. (I could have used the "Jedi Mind Trick" but I forgot!!) Also contact was never made with another Civ other than the 3 closest neighbors. (I tried with the Caravel around my land, but could never venture out into the shipping lanes)

I appreciate all the advice guys,
jackreese

im quite proud of myself... in my recent monarch oscillating war game, i had no iron, and ended up in a war with the arabians (due to me wiping out the stinking ruskies :P).
they had statue of zeus and knights templar, and with mounted warriors, spearmen, archers and catapults (i had to build a road thruogh jungle in their territory to get them to their cities.) i have taken over a few cities including the statue of zeus city and alls looking up. basically stategic resources are more replaceable in conquests, but less frequent

As the Scandinavians on a huge continents-map, with the GL and tons of galleys carrying berserks to warfare far abroad, you can easily be without resources untill rubber and oil.
It's even easier if you also make a habit out of keeping your closest neighbors tied up in MA's on your side so that they wont get the idea to send their knights/cavalry against your spearmen untill you've upgraded them to riflemen.

Also the Indians with their elephants can hold their own without the early resources... you just have to play differently and not let anyone challenge your weakening bronze-age defenders.

You might have been able to sign an ROP and road it yourself.

Well this is civ and that happens, I had no horses in a multiplayer game with playing the iroquis and you can imagine that setback, however I expanded fast and used normal methods of conquest towards some horses some 50 tiles away. Could not trade for it as there was just 1 horse in half the map! Made for interesting battles though, with my hordes of medieval infantry and catapults vs their knights etc :) I captured 38 (yes 38) indian catapults and used them to great effect vs the marauding inca knights... so mr jack reese where there's a will there's a way.

Yeah - I was childish, but couldn´t resist.

@jackreese2004: I beg your pardon, if I offended you.

On topic: I agree with Tomoyo. Do not underestimate the "power" of longbows in stack with trebuchets and spearmen. Laaaarge stacks - that is.

BTW - what do you mean "Jedi Mind Trick"?

Aww shizzle, 181 posts to the forums and thetrooper doesn't know what a Jedi Mind Trick is... Man... At least he has Iron :p

I hear ya jackreese, course getting stumped for a resource is a big kick in the a$$ to not just play a builder game - suddenly someone's got something you want! That's when I start buttering up some allies and building LOADS of cheap archers and bowmen and bust my way on through.

looks like in some of these cases you might have to pull a japanese style war. In ww2 the japanese were cut off from oil by the americans. So they made a huge gamble and went to war and prayed everything went smoothly and theyd have the vital resource by wars end. Sometimes you just have to gamble your civilization like that with war if no one is willing to provide you with the resource. Or if you simply cant find it war is again an option.

That was an invitation oddible, but I am not going to bite it...

I thought that the "Jedi Mind Trick" was a Soft Drink. :joke:

the "Jedi Mind Trick" was from the Star Wars movies...
Basically, the heros of the movies would say something to there adversary and the adversary would immediatly agree with what the hero wants.
To further illustrate.
jackreese walks up to Heather Locklear and says "Heather leave your rich husband and marry me." (Then Heather would do it)
D@m I want that Mind Trick !

Off topic. @jackreese: OK! I´ll try the trick on Keira the next time I see her...

So, you mean something like this:

Elan Sleazebaggano : You wanna buy some death sticks?
Obi-Wan : You don't want to sell me death sticks.
Elan Sleazebaggano : I don't want to sell you death sticks.
Obi-Wan : You want to go home and rethink your life.
Elan Sleazebaggano : I want to go home and rethink my life.
