Sunspot Grows to 20 Times Size of Earth

A sunspot group aimed squarely at Earth has grown to 20 times the size of our planet and has the potential to unleash a major solar storm.

The amorphous mix of spots, together called Number 652, has been rotating across the Sun and growing for several days. On Friday, it sat at the center of the solar disk.

Sunspots are areas of intense magnetic energy, cooler and darker than the surrounding surface of the thermonuclear furnace. Sometimes the magnetic fields let loose and huge amounts of radiation and charged particles are hurled into space.

The Sun's last bout of intense storminess occurred last fall, when a string of 10 major flares over two weeks knocked out satellites, damaged others, and forced the FAA (news - web sites) to reroute airlines away from exposed polar routes.

No one can say if this sunspot group will let loose with a major storm, but it has the characteristics of a potentially big event.

"The implications of this spot have scientists on the edge of their seats," NASA (news - web sites) said in a statement Friday. "If the active region generates coronal mass ejections (CMEs), massive explosions with a potential force of a billion megaton bombs, it will be a fairly direct hit to Earth and its satellites and power grids."

The Sun is now in a generally quiet period of a well-known 11-year cycle of activity. But sunspots and flares can occur at any time. Scientists do not fully understand why the spots appear or how they erupt.

The sunspot is clearly visible from Earth without a telescope. But don't look at the Sun without a proper, safe filter or other viewing technique, or permanent eye damage can result.

Uh oh. I see likely August blackouts in the crystal ball.

I thought we were in a solar minimum right now. weird

I hope that these solar storms will not effect any electronic equipment like Computers (Laptops/Desktops), PDAs, VCRs, and other appliances that rely on electronics if they are turned off.

Yep, but also lats fall i remember reading something about sun's magnetic field reversal, last fall, it was flatened at sun equator.

So maybe the sun's magnetic field is somehow rearrenging.

The 11 year cycle IIRC has nothing to do with magnetic field reversal, i can dig up to confirm.

So is this a "doomsday" event I should stock up food supplies and such for? Or is this a "small" crisis? ;)

I hope not. That requires me to actually work at the grocery store...

Just a day or two ago I witnessed a really active aurora... Perhaps these are related?

If the solar flares are timed right, we won't be able to watch the Republican convention! Aw shucks!

we haven't had this kind of activity sense the world's become as computer-dependent as it is now have we? this will be very interesting...

Oh man, I think I'm going to move to New Zealand. That way when it hits earth it would be nighttime there, and I would have half the earth to shield me. I would also duck and cover to ensure more safety.

I think we had some in 1999 actually

My guess is that the outcome will be similar to Nike's "Y2K" commercial a few years back, but that's just being pessimistic.

Speaking of magnetic fields... The earth's is weakening as well, possibly as a prelude to a north-south flip. If we get one of these storms when the field is neutral or close to it, the FAA might have to shut down air traffic instead of just routing them away from the Arctic Circle.

In fact, yes. Aurora occur when too much solar particles hit the Earth's magnetic field ; some find their way through (mostly at the poles because of the way a magnetic field acts over a sphere), and booom ionize the atmosphere.

Ya but more dangerous is,

Quote,

The weakening -- if coupled with a subsequently large influx of radiation in the form of protons streaming from the sun -- can also affect the chemistry of the atmosphere, said Charles Jackman of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center.

That can lead to significant but temporary losses of atmospheric ozone, he said.

But i have also read another article ( cant find it now), which say, that even if earth magnetic field weaken and flaten on equator, the solar wind flux coupled with the weak earth field will create an induce magnetic field that will still protect us.

Maybe that's why we dont see life instinction during past magnetic reversal ( it happened several time).

I will find the article and post link later.

Not the one i am searching for but a very good one, super computer simulation include,

Quote,

They've also learned what happens during a magnetic flip. Reversals take a few thousand years to complete, and during that time--contrary to popular belief--the magnetic field does not vanish. "It just gets more complicated," says Glatzmaier. Magnetic lines of force near Earth's surface become twisted and tangled, and magnetic poles pop up in unaccustomed places. A south magnetic pole might emerge over Africa, for instance, or a north pole over Tahiti. Weird. But it's still a planetary magnetic field, and it still protects us from space radiation and solar storms.

Excellent link Tassadar, thanks. :goodjob:

Sun's spot cycle and sun magnetic reversal are related ( so i was wrong in my first post).

February 15, 2001 -- You can't tell by looking, but scientists say the Sun has just undergone an important change. Our star's magnetic field has flipped.

The Sun's magnetic north pole, which was in the northern hemisphere just a few months ago, now points south. It's a topsy-turvy situation, but not an unexpected one.

"This always happens around the time of solar maximum," says David Hathaway, a solar physicist at the Marshall Space Flight Center. "The magnetic poles exchange places at the peak of the sunspot cycle. In fact, it's a good indication that Solar Max is really here."

But i am sure it wasnt completly reverse, it take time, last fall it was flatened on equator.

Another excellent site, National oceanic and atmospheric center, space weather on line.

And this one form europeen space agancy, they talk about last falls huge coronal mass ejection, they have very nice animated picture of those.

Edit:
The ESA site is wondefull, it have a lots of publish article, just use the search function, it is amazing, lots of information. Their SOHO sattelite do a great work in conjonction with NOAA.
