grs1 - the roman legions

Bugsy's and gengis's Training Day Experiment Sg

Right now, if I counted correctly we are three for Monarchy (Viz and slinger adn grs) and two for Republic (myself and coneh), with an advisory vote for monarchy.

Monarchy it is.

.The Celtic Nightmare

First step is raise science to 90% to get to Polytheism in 8.

Consider for a moment why we are building the GreatLib in Rome when our research will be done with cash or at the working end of a broadsword and shield and Rome is the only city over 10spt but the next best move is to a library which will burn 30+ shields so leave it for the moment.

Shift citizen at Veii so settler and growth come on same turn, to keep the city at least at three.

It looks like campaign against the Celts will have to wait until a two front force is built: strike force out of Antium to SE, a second out of Pompeii to Lugdunum and a third at Pisae aimed at Camuludunum.

T1 975
Assembling Strikeforces in mountains above Lugdunum and Alesia.

The Celts have noticed our interest and come calling. He wants our TM. Hah!
Ask if he'll trade Lugdunum for it. No, well, just you wait Brennus, me bai!

T2 950
Found Virconium in tundra

T3 925
Settler completes at Veii. Have to do a little ICS building here to get cattle between Veii and Moscow into play, but it will save us the cost of a temple or library

T4 900BC
Found Lutetia between Moscow, Veii and Smolensk.
Garrison leaves Rome for Pompeii.
Garrisons leave Hispalis, Pisae and Pompeii for Strike Force Camuludunum.
Lux raised to compensate for empty garrisons

T5 875BC
Almost ready to strike at Celts.

T6 850BC
GA ends and Rome pitches a fit.

Found Byzantium northeast of Kiev.

Strip Celtic treasury for Literature 25g. Likewise the Americans and the Chinese.
Declare on Celts

T7 825BC
Strike Force Lugdunum
Vet legion attacks, slays spear -1, promotes to Elite
Elite legion attacks, slays spear, takes city and two slaves, -2hp

Strike Force Alesia manuevers into forest.

Strike Force Camuludunum
Vet legion attacks, slays spear and city burns.

Chinese come calling, want maps. Move on , Mao.

T8 800BC
Task Force Alesia
Vet Sword attacks, slays spear
Elite warrior takes on reg spear which defends valantly but fails to promote. Warrior slain.
Vet sword attack, fails to promote, kills spear, reveals archer in garrison.
Vet sword attacks, seizes city, promotes, captures slave.

Celts won't talk

T9 775
Warriors move to engage Celt warriors approaching from north.
Legions fortify to heal before moving on Richborough and Entremont

T10 750BC
Troops moving on Entremont and fortified in north to defend against Celt warriors.
Garrisons in core cities are empty.
Celts will talk but have nothing to offer.
Polytheism can be sold to everybody for the contents of their treasuries.
May want to go ahead and do that and hope they research Monarchy for us. There is a settler en route to Pisae to resettle former Celt lands to the north. Libraries are a-building in the backline cities and barracks at the front. Next settler is due in 4 and should probably fill in coast to NW

Very nice warring Bede. I supposed we wanted the GL and stop researching ourselves after monarchy to slow overall tech pace. Slower tech pace seems essential in this game. Rome being the only city with 10spt was the reason I used it to build; all others would have been to slow.

I agree wholeheartedly. After Celts we have to decide on Japanese or America. I favor the Japanese with better lands or both with taking out the Japanese and knocking Abe back into the jungles. I really think we need the other contacts too. We have to get them fighting each other.

Preturn-Looks good.
IT-America forces our warrior out. Alesia riots.
1- Kill 2 spears, no loses take Entremont. Start moving troops to march on Richborough.
IT- Japan builds the Pyramids, how nice of them.
2- lose 2 warriors, kill 2 celtic warriors.
IT-Kiev riots, oops. Pompeii legion->legion.
3- movements.
IT-Kiev worker->worker. Veii settler->settler.
4-Move troops closer to Richborough.
IT-nada
5-Troops outside Richborough.
IT-Byzantium worker->worker.
6-kill 2 spears and destroy Richborough and kill the celts. Settle Brundisium.
IT-Lugdunum rax->temple. Spain builds collosus.
7-Settle Syracuse.
IT-Pompeii legion->legion.
8-movements.
IT-Kiev worker->worker. Veii settler->settler. Smolensk harbor->galley.
9-movements.
IT-The great library is built. Ravenna granery->galley.
10-movements

The legions are moving toward japan. We need to get our cities to the magic number of 15 SPT or 30 SPT. So Legions can be pumped in 2 or 1 turns.

Will play tonight. No word on the other continent yet. We have no suicide galleys? We really need to find them.

My goals are to head towards Japan and get a defense set up vs. America. I'd like to get Mao fighting America while I'm busy getting the pyramids from Toku.

Grs01 -550BC – We are strong to everyone. Really like that Ivory in Atlanta but we’re going to Japan boys! Pompeii gets the whip to rush a legion with 18s left. He can MP for a while. I change the perimeter cities that were building libraries to galleys and temples. We won’t be needing libraries for a while with the Glib. Some of these cities are on the brink of rioting when they grow and also make like 5g of which we are spending 10% on science so a lib in 15 turns won’t have any effect. Let’s wait until they are making cash and shields so we can build them quicker. We really need to find the other civs. With Japan having 5 core cities and a satellite I think 8 legions with backup coming in should suffice. The others are heading Abes way.
We have a monopoly on poly and prices are still high for it. I’m going to Monarchy at full speed, 80% in 12 turns. None of them have poly so we are not getting it from the GL. This is monarch, we are the biggest on the continent so even if I trade poly out they won’t beat us to it.

IT – Neapolis – Temple > Legion, Pompeii – Legion > Warrior for MP.

[1] 530BC – Embassy with China – Building a library with 4 shields, 2 spear garrison. Japan – 9 shields on barracks, temple, granary and pyramids, 2 spears ….. hehehe. Osaka investigation shows one spear and a galley. They are going down easy. America – Pop 2 Washington has is building a settler due in 2 with pop due in 7????, palace only, 2 spears.
Moving troops towards both targets. Toku sold philosophy to Abe and has 263g that he is begging to give us for poly, even throwing in philosophy which we get on the IT. He was only at 70% before. Let’s see where he is at next turn.
IT – We get Philo. Moscow – Temple > Legion.
[2] 510BC – Troop movement. 7leg, 3 war for Japan. 7 leg, 1 war for America.
IT – Kiev – Wkr>Wkr, Antium – Temple > Legion, Pompeii – Warrior > Legion.
[3] 490BC -Adjust Veii for settler timing. Rush temple in Hispalis and galley in Ravenna.
IT – Pisae – Lib – Temple, Ravenna – Galley > Warrior, Hispalis – Temple > Rax
[4] 470BC – Abe has construction! Hope he sells it to Toku with his 261g left. I’m going to wait 1 turn to see if that happens. If not I’m taking the 261g and trying to deal it and poly to Abe for construction. I would really like to get some aqueducts up in time for monarchy. Just realized I may not be the one taking Kyoto. I plan to be at it’s doorstep by then though.
IT – Rome – Lib > Worker, Veii – Settler > Temple.
[5] 450BC – Ready to declare and Toku does not have construction. Checked with Abe and he’ll deal it for poly and 550g. I’m taking Tokus cash. 1st I see that Mao does not have mapmaking. He probably has a good chance of running into someone. I take a worker, map and 25g for MM. Giving up poly cases Abes price to jump to 810. I guess I’ll have to beat it out of him. I try to extort construction from Abe. He said one of my favorites. “We think your all hat and no cattle! You have something to back up that threat? I DECLARE ON BOTH! Kill a jap settler.
IT – Rome – Wkr > Leg, Entremont – Rax – Warrior, Brund – Wkr > Rax, Lutecia – Temple > War, Byzantium – Wkr > Rax.
[6] 430BC – Atlanta falls with one worker captured. America has a settler pair that I tried kill with a vet warrior and he is injured. Moving on Osaka. I swapped Veii to rax to try and get pop up. It can do 4 turn settlers. I swap Kiev to granary as prebuild for legion when road connects.
IT – Alesia – Rax>War, Cumae- Temple>Leg, Smolensk-Galley>Rax, Ravenna-War>Galley.
[7] 410BC – Found ceasaraugusta near core. Found Palmyra on old Richborough site. All but Kyoto have drafted. Most likely archers. I’m heading to Kyoto and letting the 3 legions bringing up the rear handle Osaka, hopefully when it grows. Just realized we have war happiness for some reason.
IT – Rome – 2 turn legions, Moscow – Leg > Rax(oops), Neapolis – Leg>Leg, Pompeii – Leg> Temple.
[8] 390BC – Scoot the bulk of troops by Osaka towards Kyoto. America sends nothing.
IT – Veii – Rax>Warrior, Luticia – Warrior > Legion
[9] 370BC – Almost forgot! Mao gets Philo for alliance against Japs and Americans. Moving troops. Kill an American settler and one Jap archer hoping for a leader.
IT – Saw an American horse. Forgot about those. I have some legions that I was already sending north to protect our northern territories.
[10] 350BC - Kill 2 Americans and a jap archer. Groups in Japan are split up, some heading towards Tokyo.

Veii can turn 4 turn settlers after the IT by swapping back and forth with the Luticia cow tile. 6-4-6-4 on food. We are getting Monarchy next turn but I think I would wait ontil we get currency and get some markets set up and a few towns over 6 pop before pulling the trigger. Unit costs will be high if we swap now. I would also wait until we get a few more towns.

SAVE 350BC

Did you disable the upgrading of Legions to medieval infantry? If not, then you might have a problem...

Barblinger: Check the GGF4 (should be 3 :rolleyes:) thread.

I want to reiterate how important I think it is to make galleys for suicide runs to where ever the other civs are. We must find them, get them at war with each other and slow their tech pace. We are limited to legions and please remind me if we can make MDI, I regress, we will have a tough time over there if we have to face rifles. Galleys, legions, markets, banks with a smattering of libraries. I don't think we will have much trouble getting our continent and an FP in China/Japan will be nice.

It may be to our advantage to get a military academy prebuild rolling too. At 400 shields extra armies would be nice for pillaging. BTW, from all the AW's I do I am in awe of pillaging power. It kills their pop, their gold and their science. If next leader does go for it make it in a town that can produce some shields. From Sir Pleb we can also rush the armies once we have MilAcad. We will be making a lot of cash down the line. Also, I'm thinking palace move to Byzantium, any comments?
