grs1 - the roman legions

Grs01 –250AD – First off with out even looking at the game, though it is in background right now, I wat to thank grs for this scenario. I chimed in thinking it was impossifrifiggin billable, and yet we stand a chance. Let’s look at what is happening. In score we are up on the ottomans by 801 to 678 and France is back at 465, we’re nearly double #3. Powere is not a consideration in my opinion because we are WAY ahead of our closest rival, who it is I care not, we had to be at this point to have a chance. My goal during these rounds are to fornicate the wars in foreign lands to our favor and build a future landing party. BTW if there are any remnants of society other than Rome on our continent they will be extinguished. Now let me take a look. We’re rolling theology in 9 at –45gpt and we’re ahead in tech. GO LEGIONS. I HEAR THEM MARCHING! Looks like Ottomans have taken Marsaillies (misspell) and are hurting Joanie. Al other civs look to have possibly been using pop rushing because I see no one that has a city above 7 pop except Adana for Ottomans and Paris for Joanie. We have to keep close tabs on them and this is why I am writing on this. WATCH THE OTHER CONTINENT. Balance ‘their ‘ war. Hehehhehe. Lookng at it more closely I see that Egypt and Arabia shold be kept away from each other. Bede reported that Egypt and Ottomans signed an alliance against us during his turn 3. That should be ending soon but Cleo is not talkative at this point. I really want to turn the tide on Osman, and include the Arabian prince. I’m not bringing him in at this point hoping to get them both on Osman.
Wow, almost forgot about securing the homeland for legions to march across unimpeded. This is our continent. I finally saw how to show all alliances in one view, well not quite, but hey if anyone is listening, tell me how. I’ve seen it in other threads and it can be handy if it is quick. We are at war with Abe and 3 turns left on an ROP with Mao which is not negotiable. Plenty of legions ready to move in, which is nice. I think

I’m ready. Peace with Cleo Turn the table on Osman and take our continent. BTW, we’re at 20-80 going for navigation.

Abu signs up for 180g to fight the Ottomans too. I’m changing the SunTzu build to Hanging Garden because this continent is ours and happiness may be a problem. In 5 turns I’m hoping the populace forgets about the war and concentrates on production.

Cheking our cities it looks like max 10 with a temple, library in Rome but not the rest. I swap 2 major producers to market to up their potential.
Fingers crossed Ottomans does not bring Egypt in on Arabia.

IT – Pompeii – Market – Legion and my bad Syracuse riots. Fixed. Game on though

[1] 260 – Cleo wants to talk but, she’s not very talkative. She does peace for any price that I want to offer her.
My first battle is an elite legion vs. a reg spear and I’m dead. I wouldn’t take that as a good sign, fortunately I don’t believe in ‘signs’ and I’ll persevere. It was good to get through this first turn. 2 turns until China gets it. I’m thinking we are a long way from the other continent contacting the rest of our continent so it may be no holds barred. They will never know.

IT – Egypt signs Joanie aginst us. Cleo is now on my sh-t list. Veii – Settler – Market.

[2] 270 – We may lose Boston. Not a big deal because there are plenty of legions within 2 tiles but I hate that. Didn’t see it until now though. 1 3/3 legion vs 2 vet archers. Also, just noticed were in China’s territory any-how so, game on. Going for the iron. I’m a bit perplexed about where to send the galleys I’m thinking it will take a while to get to nav so I’m sending all of them to our west coast for a longer crossing. We will attack first..Although most of our troops may be in the east. I’m thinking this mess will be cleaneaned up by then and those territories will be ours. Plenty-o-time. Wait a minute, whre is the road from Entremont to Tatung. We’re chopping wood? Roads baby! Legions live by roads. Roads first!!!! Moving boys into china agression positions. He’s going to whine. Too bad. He’s next. Couple of changes, Moscow to market in 1 and Neapolis to harbor in a few. Always review F1. Those are your people. They’re counting on YOU!

IT – American’s do take Boston and we lost a settler to a damn barb horse. Moscow – Market > Legion. Disregard my last statement because I let Kiev riot. No wait a minute I still mean it. They are getting a kinda rushed market soon. We’ll see how the corruption is there.

[3] 280AD – We declare on China after he gives us 62g. Legions are like that. Chinan falls at a loss of some weakass legion tat cold not score 1 hp. His mentor behind him took the spear unscathed. Tatung falls but I leave the slaves to wonder. The legion coming up behind will gather them. Kaifeng falls to 1 elite. Has anyone had a leader yet. I’m beginning to wonder. More minor killings with 1 elite promo. Boston is my target.

IT - Rome – Hanging Gardens > Legion, Alesia – Galley > Harbor, Cumae – Harbor > Galley, Brundisium – Library, I’m not whining it makes cash > Legion, CeasarAugusta – Legion > Legion.

[4] 290AD – Looks like Ottomans captured Orleans and a load of silks. We recapture Boston with 2 elite wins. Where are the leaders? I lower the happy valve 1 notch per hanging gardens, only –26gpt instead of, I think, -45 gpt. Running the workers we have towards the dyes. We have a stinkin’ Estustian horse in the mist. There will be limited damage. Setting up for Bejing after pillaging the iron, but it is to get his sword army to head there, hopefully. I’m having a hard time with our lack of roads. We must have command of those. I change 8 builds to workers to dig there way back and more are on the way from our side. Rushed one for 16g. Byzantium goes to settler for the mountain site.

IT – We go elite near Boston, the sword army heads towards Bejing and Lungdanum gets pillaged by the barb horsie. Neapolis – Harbor > Galley, Pompeii > Legion > Legion, Atlanta – Worker > Worker, Tarantum – Worker > Worker, Ceasarea – Worker > Worker, Byzantium – Settler > Worker.

[5] 300AD - Another elite win. No promo near Boston. One American warrior left but it’s ours now. Working on position. Workers too. We have dyes that should be ours. Bejing has a lot of river crossings and I’m tempting the sword army. Lets see if he attacks. Ottomans just learned Republic. That should help him during his war.Yea right! Is he revolting? No, he is a monarchy. But yet he researched republic. Huh? Do some mm’ing around Moscow. Should have seen it earlier. Lose the elite that pillaged, he gets our prayers, to a sword guarding Bejing.

IT – Woo-hoo! We kick two swordsman tail with our legions. I guess they are better are defense. Rome – Legion > Market. Brund – Worker > Worker.

[6] 310AD – We take the hill at 19% odds against the 10hp sword army facing off against us. We also gather 25g on a barb camp SE of Kyoto. Misclicked a worker into a mountain. Oops. Found Nicopolis. Moving units. A couple scrums, win 3 lose 1.

IT – Great! A reg legion beats an elite and goes Vet and the Army is dead!!!! Moscow – Legion > Worker on growth, Hispalis – Library > Legion,

[7] 320AD - We lose to Shatung one legion short and then take Xinjian the other iron source. We may lose it but we’ll get it again. Positioning troops.

IT – Arabia and Egypt sign peace. We master the REPUBLIC from the GL. Brund – Worker > Worker, Viroconium – Galley > Temple for the whale.

[8] 330AD - Take a couple of Chinese in the field including a settler. Macao burns up.Working on roads.

IT – Greece wants to re-up with the Ottomans. YES!. Theology comes in at 10%. I’m going education in 10. This is a tough choice expiring the GL but we have to beat these clowns to ocean lanes. Moscow – Worker > Worker, Satsuma – Worker > Worker, Cumae – Galley> Galley, Pompeii – Legion > Legion.

[9] 340AD – We take Shantung a kill a few others and begin the move on Bejing. Next leader will clean it up. I pop I few scrap units loking around for a way to die. Cleo must be in bed with Osman because she wants theology for peace. I also get 25gpt for the deal and then 50g gets her back at war with Osman. She can sell to Joanie though and that my get back to Osman but he only has 40g to deal with. We’ll see how that plays out..

IT – Alicea – Harbor > Galley, Antium – Legion > Worker on growth, Neapolis – Galley > Worker. Lots of work to do every where. Look at what tiles are being worked, Hispalis – Legion > Legion, Byzantium – Worker > Worker, Ceasaraugusta – Legion > Legion worker next. Egypt completes the the Lighthouse.

[10] 350AD – Angyang goes down. Moved workers and troops. Take your time cleaing them out using mountains.

We now have a load of galleys on the west coast staged to become caravels. I have started sending troops to there already for the moment we get navigation. Keep the others at war.

Right before the chinese army died

What is left to clean up -------------

Well played!
I agree with researching Education - we dont have time at all. It seems that China is dying, our only job is to build galleys and bring our legions to the coast.

Really nice run and thanks for the compliment. It's a great fun for me too.

Just one important thing:

We have many workers near the dyes and a barb horse threatening them. Use the fortified vet legion on the dyes to remove them on the pre-turn and build a colony on the dyes with one worker asap.

The roster:
Vizurok - up next
grs - on deck
Bede
conehead234 - skipped, hopefully back next turn
Barbslinger - just played

I have a settler heading there too. I was thinking about the colony but thought a city would be better.

A question that arises: What will we do with our first leader (if we ever get one)? I don't think - now following the reasoning against Zun Tsu's - there is a wonder near that we want. So what is left are an army and the forbidden palace. I am pro the forbidden palace and would try to rush it in Tokyo or even Bejing if we already catured it. A productive area near the enemy isle will be very benifical to us.

Other thoughts?

I don't think there has been a single one as yet. Is it possible to turn them off? If so, are they. I'm finding this odd. Hopefully we'll get one soon to alleviate my anxiety. I'd really like to get that FP rolling near the East coast to help in ship building.

@vizurok: please play your turns, it's already 36 hours since barbslinger posted his. If you cant play in time please ask for a skip. I would really like you to play today, of I will have to pick it up tomorrow.

@barbslinger: no, they are not turned off, just bad luck.

SAVE

Fantastic way to show up! With a leader! I was begnning to think they were never going to show. Great turns. What is the leader doing? I think it is time for a FP.

Had a quick look at the save. I would burn the MGL on an FP in Bejing. the cities with happy trouble that are building a library I would swap to court. I would also begin a mass exodus from the west and send workers and legions east. Workers for joining to Bejing, first ringers and work and legions to board boats when we get navigation. All coast towns on galleys and kick tech up to get astronomy sooner. Put Rome on uni prebuild for copernicus, it's our best science city, and maximize its gold. More workers, legions and galleys. Libraries only if they can be had within 4-5 turns. We'll have navigation in around 12 turns and there will be no more research. We can extort while we are at war with AI, so I would set up a prebuild for smiths and Newtons. We want them both but hopefully it will be over by then. Watch moving the legions out of cities if they are doing MP. For that reason I might disconnect a few 5-shield cities to build warriors for MP in our core. That will free up any MP. Looks good and you may want to try to extort some cash from Abu. Peace is up on th IT and we can renegotiate.

FP is good somewhere over there. I was thinking Bejing to be closer the next wave of action. I also forgot to mention all the dark spaces that will be springing barbcamps. I'd get vets on those right away and settle them or build an outpost.
