[GS] GS impressions/random observations thread.

I'm curious if Mali actually has a desert bias.

Here's what I found:

The AI seems to think new resources are super valuable:

Funny how we never saw it in any of the streams

The barbarian spawn problem seems broke to me. I've taken to building scouts and now warriors (skirmishers are too expensive) to fog bust. Perhaps this is an effort to hamper in domination players? I'm playing domination Hungary, and I'm not really going to build a ton of cities to fill in the gaps. I would rather fog bust. Other than what settlers I steal. I don't have a picture now, but I'll try to get a picture when I'm done. I still have a lot of tundra down South to get under control.

I don't see any other solution at the moment. If I kill one camp, another camp pops up the next turn. It's worse when my units are still wounded from killing the first camp. It's difficult to get caught up.

Set mine to 3. I've had a moderate flood, a violent dust storm and a tornado, none of which did anything detectable. According to the tooltip dust storms now add fertility, which doesn't make a lot of sense and they said in an early stream that they'd deliberately shied away from.
Dust storms from the Sahara fertilize the Amazon rainforest.

120 turns into my first proper game after a couple of rerolls (France, Eleanor vs. the other 9 GS leaders, King, Continents). Loving it so far!
  • I seem to be in the minority in that I am experiencing pre-GS levels of barbarians, possibly slightly more but nothing too tricky. They have been a nuisance pillaging two of my traders so far. I will say though that my first-rolled map had none whatsoever; I abandoned it for that reason mostly.
  • At disaster level 2 I have seen loads and loads of them, 3 or 4 affecting my territory. I love them!
  • Kupe put his city in what looks from this distance to be a singularly terrible spot
  • The AI is getting annoying begging for my Favour and Strategic Resources every couple of turns!
  • No city flipping yet but I'm just getting started. I got my dream start with Divine Spark, Oracle, Apadana and the GWs are starting to come in
  • Have met 5 AI and they all love me; not a whiff of war, though in my other game I did get an early DOW from Matthias
Alternate names considered for Bordeaux included "Bring It, Mother Nature" (and "I put my campus in the wrong place")

Anyone seen this? Haven't met Phoenicia yet but my delegate is telling me they have received a delegation; iirc pre-GS it only told you about unknown Civs when they sent a delegation. Bug, I'm guessing.

Is anybody else finding the production queue frustrating? I like that it's there, but the lack of a drag facility, the auto-close after adding some items, not being able to queue successive builds (e.g. Campus -> library -> university) and auto-overwriting the current build rather than adding to the queue makes it almost as cumbersome as not having it :(

I have yet to use the queue. And I don't even know where the multi queue is. Old habits die hard.

I haven't received era score for settling in inhospitable terrain like tundra and desert like I used to.

But that's okay, the unending barbarian camps are providing way more than I need.

I am still happier that it's there but yes, not being able to queue buildings in a district you haven't built yet is annoying.

The historic moment for building next to a volcano made me chuckle.

"All mountains smoke like that, right?" :shifty:

The new gameplay mechanisms for Kupe and Pachacuti are super fun to play.

Getting annoyed with every leader immediately asking to trade for favor the moment I have any. They don’t even offer anything of value. Every AI I know will consistently ask on the same turn, one after the other.

Agreed 100%, same with strategic resources.

Notes about unique units

Berserkers require 10 Iron compared to 20 for Swordsmen

Diggers require no resources unlike Infantry they replace

Heteroi require 10 horse vs 20 for horsemen

Hypastpist require 5 iron vs 20 for swordsmen

Immortals require 10 iron vs 20 for swordsmen

Keshig require 10 Horses compared to 20 iron for knights

Malon Raiders do not require resources

Mountie does not require resources

Ngao Mbeba requires 5 iron vs 20 for swordsmen

Redcoat requires 20 miter

Rough Rider no resources

Saka no resources

Samurai 10 Iron

Toa no resources

Varu no resources

Winged Hussar 10 Iron

Zeven Provencien 10 miter vs 20 for frigate

Jong no resources

All other unique units cost the same as they replace

Nice. I like that resource requirements - or lack thereof - are now another way UUs are differentiated from each other. Jongs are going to be a bit scary.

You know, Varu and Domrei could have required elephants if they wanted...

Started my first game yesterday, reached the Industrial Era so far. I chose Victoria (Huge Continents) to see how good she is.

Turns out Pax Britannica is still pretty terrible, lol? I'm playing on a huge map, so reaching other continents is pretty painful. Still, I started right on the edge of my home continent, so the extra trade route capacity helped grow my cities. The free unit is rubbish. Pax Britannica giving free naval units is very strong though. It will give me free Ironclads soon. Curious to test her out on Fractal or Island plates.

The map is significantly better. A lot of variation in terrain types. Production appears to be less of a bottleneck. Volcanoes and Floods are amazing additions. Droughts I'm not keen on though. I need Builders more than usual, so i think this is an indirect buff for China or any other system that gives extra charges.

The queue is good but less good than that of CQUI imo. Multiqueue is great though.

Love the resources system. I have no niter and it actually incentivises me to go to war over it, much like the real life. I'm definitely building more Encampments to improve my stockpiles so that I can sell without tanking my army.

Lots of Barbarians in GS. First time I ever got a Classical Golden Age without discovering a Natural Wonder

The AI plays Mali and Sweden really poorly. Sweden expanded wide but only now finished their first Threatre Square. They're one of on the few AI's without Great Works right now. I hink Kristina's agenda should make her more competitive for culture. Mali is a pushover. They're making money, but don't appear to be doing much with it.

Conversely Inca, Maori, Hungary and Eleanor (France) appear to be doing really well in the hands of an AI. Eleanor went tall, spams wonders, even got Cathedrals for more loyalty pressure. Hungary roflstomped the Ottomans and show no signs of slowing down. Toa's are utterly broken and Kupe seems to love attacking city states as well (THEY STILL HAVEN'T FIXED THAT ANNOYING BUG WHERE AN ALLIED AI CAN DOW YOUR CITY STATE ALLIES). Inca built a lot of terrace farms as they should. Canada is, as expected, a nonfactor. I met Dido but she's in a spot of the map my explorers cannot reach easily (other side of the foreign continent), but she has a LOT of cities.

Pretty dull if you do not which is the norm.
Tx for the write up, I played 100 turns last night with them, quite a dull game.

Sad. I’m really looking forward to playing Vicky again. I’ll prepare for potential dullness.

I don’t think the problem is actually Pax B at this point.

Instead, I think maybe England’s RND needs a little love - particularly given Eleanor has to play without Pax B indirectly buffing the RND and compared to the Cothon. I’d like to see the RND give a +% bonus for Naval and land Melee if on another continent, or something like that.

Is WotW any good? I thought it might be good for Swords and Knights.

I haven't received era score for settling in inhospitable terrain like tundra and desert like I used to.

But that's okay, the unending barbarian camps are providing way more than I need.

That’s a bit sad. I quite liked that one too.
