I'm probably wrong, but is it possible for that to be a slightly reduced Western Roman Empire?

Now that I look at it, it seems possible. I'm going to need some confirmatory eyes because the apparent fragmentation of Italy suggests that's unlikely. I'd like some confirmation if those lines are just random, or if they denote some kind of internal divide. I might just be seeing things. Even so, we have to assume it's a-historical because of the fall of The Eastern Roman Empire. I don't think the POD is a few centuries though. It seems closer judging by the borders. I still like my Arab idea better

Also Southeast Asia is a dead give-away. Champa are still going, so are the Khmers, Pegu, Ayuttuya and I presume that grey thing are the Burmese?

I would suggest that it's far earlier than that. I'm going with the Umayyad Caliphate with a successful Siege of Constantinople (717). That ugly thing in the West is probably some sort of Battle of Tours (732) Arab success wankfest. I would suggest that Poland is not Polish, or Slavic in origin at all. I would point to it being an Avar Empire.

But what about Persia then? Shouldn't it be in its possession? Unless this map involves alien space bats coming down and giving the Persian's superpowers or something.

Ah..I didn't even notice Sakhalin. Still though, it definitely seems correlated. Maybe it could be something that is a result of agricultural intensity, but this is not necessarily its only cause? Degeneration of soil quality?

It looks like agriculture, though more specific. Greenland and the Sahara and some smaller areas of desert seem to be the "no data" zone or something. Though of course, nothing is grown there.

And then the red... those are heavy growing areas. I actually can't see heavy agriculture areas that aren't red or orange. Intensity of growth? Condition of soil?

The grey in africa (particulary in Egypt), in caucasia, in mexico...

In a way it is linked to population (Iceland coast, China, Greenland, brazil coast, Chile, Nile delta...)

EDIT: The agriculture correlation can be explained as this is one condition that can lead to soil degradation, but it's not the only causal way and it is not necessarily enough to cause it alone. And of course population is correlated with agriculture (historically). Looks like a good example for a QCA as there are several paths that can lead to the same result!
