edit: it's League of Nations. It has to be. I just don't know what about it.
The orange areas all look like mandates after WWI.
edit 2: dark grey is never joined, Alaska is light grey 'cause it was a territory at the time. I guess, following from that, Libya is lighter than Italy for the same reason... and Newfoundland light blue cause it's a territory of the UK, dark blue.
*colours may be off due to colourblindness*
Dark Blue [i.e. Britain] original members that never left
Blue [.e. Mexico] joined later and never left
Green [i.e. Italy] original members that left
Yellow [i.e. USSR] joined later and left
Grey [i.e. USA] never joined
Orange [i.e. Palestine] mandates
Lighter versions of a colour are colonies (or territories) of a country in that group.
Northern France represents the Free French. That was what had me confused.
No idea, the list seems fairly comprehensive. The only things I can think of is some sort of special type of membership (i.e. observer status like that which some countries have held with the UN) or leaving and rejoining
Nothing yet. It's not really wealth-related. I wouldn't go as far as to say wealth is irrelevant, since I think what the map tracks both encourages wealth and builds upon wealth, but don't focus on the fact that countries in green tend to be wealthy.
