Guided Missile

oh, it seems that with the new patch civ's really know how to use them. I let a level 8 destroyer come to close to my enemys coast and it was sunk with two simple missiles... Just like that. I was really shocked to see this jewel sink...

Useless units imho.
It takes tons of mouseclicks to get them anywhere near the frontline.
If they finally get there, they do a tiny amount of damage and they're gone.
Horrible, i hate them.
SAM's i kill with artillery.

Not in a naval invasion you aren't :)

If you can establish a safe beachhead for 2 turns it requires to set them up. I had a recent game where Darius was pushing a Science victory... he had 4 pieces already built. I had to DoW him so for 40 turns I reinforced my navy to support an invasion.

I came at him with 4 battleships, 2 missle cruisers, 6 destroyers and 2 aircraft carriers with jet fighters... and about 15 land units. I did some initial sorties to see what he had and it was indeed a sea of mobile SAM spam...

I picked a city all alone on a peninsula to get an intial beachhead. The plan was to take that city, reinforce it and swing around to the north east and push at a city that was closer to his capital and split his forces.

Well.. as soon as I got close, he rebased 8 fighters/jets to the city and overwhelmed my missle cruisers. Then he spammed guided missles and killed one of my carriers (my fault for moving them too close) and a battleship. He had 2 destroyers sweep in out of the fog of war and started sinking my embarked units. His artillery took out a destroyer... I ended up taking the city with combined arms but it was costly. So costly he had me trapped there for about 20 precious turns.

As intelligent as his initial defense seemed, once a city falls the AI seems incapable of taking it back. Ultimately a win.

You need at least one carrier full of jets/fighters to intercept airborne attacks. Naval and airborne attacks must commence 5-10 turns before you start sending in embarked units.

Drag a worker or a crossboman (or whatever you can spare) to lure out his missiles and ships into your fog of war. Finish them off with submarines (they are deadly post-patch). Unlike military units, civilians can be damaged only 4 HP per strike, so that's 3 wasted missiles on a single embarked worker.

Good tips, yeah I learned a lot of what not to do from that battle. I didn't bother to set my aircraft to intercept because it never seemed to do anything. And I definitely should have had some subs to gaurd my flanks

Im trying to use guided missiles and the game isnt allowing me to attack cities with the missiles. I can only attack units. Any suggestions to fix this??

They are cheaper than mechs and stealth. If I am under attack and every turn counts, getting some out quick can save the day, rather than wait a few extra turns and get killed.

I like to use missiles when ever I can. Plus they are what gives the Aegis Cruiser its teeth

Guided missiles real strength, for me, is using them offensively. As I conquer each city, I move my stack, usually of 15-30 missiles to the next closest (but fully healthy) city. I then launch them from my city at the next city I wish to conquer. Usually it only takes 6-10 missiles to take a city and I move a tank or two in to take it. I'm usually generating 5-6 missiles per turn so the supply almost never ends.

Yeah, I used to do pretty much the same thing -- only I don't like guided missiles so I would move my bomber force. Well, one game I was really kicking ass with my super-B17s (this was pre-patch when stealths couldn't be promoted); took one of the large enemy cities, moved my entire bomber force there to prepare for the knock-out punch, and ... and ... and WHAM!:nuke: I had, um, forgotten about his little old nuclear submarine.

I feel for you WCBarney...

Due to the events that occured last four days in my war as german empire against the roman empire which easily lasted for almost one thousand years by now. Caesar the prick declared on me in 1000s and its now 2100ad and i'm finally getting revenge.

Anyways, Guided Missles is seriously GREAT. They supplement your defenses for when you're out of gpt to build more units.

A major assault that got blocked and the enemy is now retreating to save what he can save?

Indirect bombardment! After ur artillery and airforces had their go, and there's still survivors and stragglers left? Good, now use your guided missles to finish the job and force the ai to rebuild even more units which in turn, purchases you 1-10 extra turns for each wounded units that's out of safe reach for you to eliminate but can eliminate with disposable weapon like guided missles. They're GREAT defensive weapon.

Each city of mine now has minimum of 1 guided missle available in it, while with extras in others.

I should say this, Romans wanted me dead bad for their domination victory, I was only country in their way for them to reach the other side of Pangaea in order to eliminate the rest of AIs.
