Gunship does NOT benefit from railroad, why?

Is it just me or is this a feature in civ4 ?

-Gunship cannot move across ocean square, even tiny coastal square.
Ok, not good, but not too bad
-Gunship does not get the 10 square move bonus with railroad, it still moves with its 4 movement point per turn ??
-The same happen with road, no movement bonus from road neither.
What ?? Now my warrior move faster than a gunship and get to the frontline first.

EDIT: Just found some facts about gunship from my testing:

1. They don't benefit from railroad... (this is the whole point of the thread )
2. Cannot cross ocean.
3. They KILL tank - (20 + 100% = 40 VS 28 )
They can stand against modern armor! ( 1 to 1 chance)
*Gunship get 100% bonus VS armor (tank and modern armour) but NOT mechanized infantry
4. Can be loaded into transport
5. They get -50% penalty if doing amphibous attack directly from the transport lame..i thought they fly
6. Penalty for attack for crossing river, again... lame (EDIT: FIX by the 1.09 patch )
7. Cannot be loaded into carrier
8. With 4 movement point in enemy territory, they can pillage twice.Move->pillage->move->pillage.

Something is seriously wrong with this beautiful unit, the attack penalty doesn't seems right.
GIVE THEM AN "AMPHIBOUS" PROMOTION PLEASE!
EDIT2: After the 1.09 patch, they nolonger suffer penalty for attacking across river :) :) One step closer in perfecting Gunship.

Furthur Mod suggestion:
-benefit from railroad
-free amphibous promotion
-can be transported by carrier AND transport
-limited movement across ocean

Can't gunships be moved by trains? Because let's face it, you don't get higher movement on your foottroops just because they walk by the side of a railroad - you move them on trains. If you can move a tank on a train why not a gunship?

a good point.

can we make them benefit from rail but not road?

I suppose gunships CAN be transported by trains when relocating to another city. Spose this would be interesting to implement.

However no, I dont think gunships should benefit from railroads....

I've also noticed this, and it seems rather silly. Redeploying gunships becomes slower than redeploying any other troop when you're moving behind your own lines. Seems like the simplest solution would to be just to give them a rebase mission like any other air unit.

Lets hope the modder notice this.

Be it a railroad benefit or rebase , and have limited movement across sea tile too. That would add more strategic choices.

make them capable of staying withint 2 tiles of land maybe. Like the CTP fusion tank, which was a really cool unit.

I think the best thing would be to simply boost the movement of the gunship from 4 to around 6 or 8. That would make it perfectly viable to me!

ok.

Lets think for a second here.

Gunships fly.

End of discussion.

Ok let's think a little more

Gunships fly...

Trains roll

Gunships fly faster than trains roll

Therefore gunships should move faster than units on trains.

^^

not for prolonged periods of time though.

Although a 'rebase' option would be nice. Wherever you build the chopper, its pretty much stuck on that continent, which is pretty unrealistic considering the various methods of transportation.

That would make it capable of ridiculous strikes behind enemy lines, though. Four moves with no terrain penalty seems perfectly acceptable in that scenario. They're really pretty nifty units, though maybe not something you would build in droves. Good for their niche, though.

Even with refuelling a chopper could move faster than a train.

regarding the transportation of aircrafts, it will be nice to make carrier capable of transporting bombers, just that bombers won't be able to launch air strike from carriers, simulating that the carrier can hold bombers, just doesn't have long enough runway for the aircraft to take off and land. :goodjob:

My suggestion for a mod :

- Make it able to cross a 2square ocean. Or make it able to cross ocean, but the final position must be on any land.
- Get the benefit from railroad, please.. for watever sake

The gunship is doing fine in the enemy territory with 4 movement point if i m not mistaken. 6 movement will be too high, equavalent to an aircraft !

Completely dissagree.

Being from the military myself, I have loaded everything onto trucks, and planes. There is nothing that we cannont move. And, with the thinking of not allowing Gunships to move, then along that line nothing should benefit from rail.

This makes no sense.

'Copter's can and do ride Rails along with trucks and plane's.

cheers for that Arthurianite, im not 100% on the transportation of choppers on trains. I just thought it would be too cumbersome, with the prop's and all.

I spose if tanks can benefit from rails, I dont see why choppers cant then!

I also agree that choppers should be able to be transported 'overseas', and a rebase option similar to planes would solve this problem (although it might take longer than planes or something)

good point however... gunships are of a dynamically different shape than a tank. It would require quite a bit of time to make it fit unless you were to use a special rail car. But the rotos would hit everything as you traveled. Unless of course the rotors were foldable... in any case, while gunships lack travel in your lands, they benefit in enemy lands as the can strike and retreat back to a safe square quite easily. To be totally honest though, I never build them, just ugrade my cavalry if I've got em but I just don't seem to use the gunships much...

Personally I would like to do the following changes to the Gunship:

- Movement increased from 4 to 6.
- Strength increased from 20 to between Tank and Modern Armour.
- Ability to fly over coast.

As it is now I never use them, they are, well, useless.
