Civgeek said:
Not sure about the wonky culture border you noted, ...
Actually, I think the borders are due to the culture from Tenochtitlan and the fact that culture can only extend into the ocean to coast+1.
Civgeek said:
... but the point about our caravel being in Japanesse waters is due to the fact they can freely enter other civs territory without Open Borders/War. Quite handy for exploring.
Interesting. I didn't know that.
Civgeek said:
Also, I don't think you have to be in a city with a barracks to upgrade as per CivIII; I think any city will do.
OK, I just noticed that as soon as I left the city, the option to upgrade was gone. I didn't want to get all the way to my target and not have the upgrade option.

Turn 200 (1400 AD)
Civgeek: A quick review of our position shows most things in order, although perhaps a little lacking in happiness in some cities. Since we haven’t really finalized what victory condition we’re aiming for, I’ll assume military expansion remains the first priority. So ... onwards fellow Senators.
Saxon's borders expand
Tlaxcala grows: 3

Turn 201 (1410 AD)
Civgeek: A traveling vagabond in Rome informs the Senate that we are the most advanced civilization in the world, followed by our neighbor Fredrick. Scouts from the southwestern border inform us that Toku has established Nagoya on the coast west of Tlaxcala. After reviewing the military situation, the Pro Consul decides a southern military campaign against Frederick, taking out Essen and the valuable dye plantations makes the most sense. We start marshalling a southern expeditionary force from our well-positioned and well-manned army.
Civgeek: Since war is eminent, switch to Theocracy to get experience points on new military builds. Also decide to use some of our limited treasury to upgrade a couple of horse archers to knights.

Turn 202 (1420 AD)

Civgeek: At this point the war seems to be going well. We are nearly ready to assault Düsseldorf in the north, after which a link-up between the northern and southern armies could give us enough strength to take Berlin. We also have two Macemen headed south on a galley to try and take the southern island (we can probably also get it in a peace deal). Here’s a few screen shots.

I'd say try and take Berlin and then sue for peace getting whatever you can. Baring that, send him to the dustbin of history.

Nice going Civgeek, more warmongering for the anti-warmongering council. Munich is not much of a buffer, if we are going to take Berlin we might want to take Munich also. I don't see much reason in stopping, we will definately need some suicide cats to break Berlin and/or Munich though.

And if we build Oxford, we'll most likely want to put in either Antium or Ferrum, those being our science cities.

I take a look around and start moving troops towards the front line. I notice we have very few cats, and none in production, I see that a cavalry was started in Tenochtitlan so I switch it to cat, which is perfect since that's right were the galley will pick up. I hold off on attacking dortmund until I can get that cat in there. I figure they aren't going anywhere anyway.
civ4screenshot00293vl.jpg

This looks like too much of a fair fight without a cat, and I'm not one to get started in fair fights.

munich00006yg.jpg

I don't trust the Mongols at all.

hmmmm00008kc.jpg

We have a friend on our little island.

Notes:

Things went pretty well, I only lost 1 unt, mostly thanks to the Mongols who beat Munich down (and lost a number of unts) for some reason they didn't bring cats. Our golden age has started so the next person should be able to build a ton of stuff. All of our troops are in Munich, the good thing is, its a choke point. Unless Kahn wants to sail around and out flank us, but we should be able to see him since he can't leave the coast. Our 2 "friends" border us to the south so the military pressense is a little light there. I suggest the next person move a few units from Munich down there, not too many though. Our units are definately getting dated. I upgraded the top couple experienced units, but didn't want to waste much money. We finally got Mercantilism which I switched to, it hurt to lose those nice foreign trade routes we had set up, but the specialist are great when we have as many cities as we do. Also, I didn't switch any other civics infact I probably should have held off on that one and let someone do all of them at once, but when I once I get banking its like automatic for me to switch.

Also, I noticed we have A LOT of farms and few cottages. We definately need to start plowing some of the farms under and making towns. We should probably switch to Pacifism and Beauracracy if we aren't goint to war soon, but I wouldn't till after the golden age ends. So maybe we should just go after the Mongols with the civics we have now and after that switch once we have some towns built up. I don't know, none of the peace time civics are going to fit us well if we plan on waring, so I guess we should just wait and see.

Hi guys sorry it took all weekend
no problem, gave me a chance to finish the GOTM.

i think the phrase is "got it", though i doubt i'll be able to play my turns today, monday's arent good civing days for me. but i'll try my darnest to fit it in either late tonight or tomorow.

wow, i feel like a tool. couldnt play yesterday either, but realy should have kept you all informed of that. will play now.
sorry for the long delay.

well, loaded the game, was looking through the starting turn to get a feel for it. then got interupted by my mom for something that should have taken a half hour.....just got back.
i am REALY sorry, but after all that, i'm going to have to beg your forgiveness and get skipped.
i dont have the time to play now, gotta go to sleep to wake up for work tomorow, and i know i wont have time tomorow and then i'm off to my sister's for the weekend, so i'm just not able to play my turns in the near future.
wish i had planned my time a bit better the last couple days so that i'd either had the time to do this or atleast known that i wouldnt have the time....or something.

again, i appologize.

No problem as far as I'm concerned, been pretty busy myself. With this weekend being Christmas, perhaps a brief pause would be to everybody's liking anyway and RoddyVR could pick-up on Monday or Tuesday next week and not miss a turn? I know I'll probably be missing in action until then myself.

Whoever calls a "got it" between Roddy and me is fine. Sure, there's the holiday, but I'm pent up with a knee injury, and I'll have some free time. If you can get to it Roddy, that's cool, but if I have a chance, I know I'll want to play some. And as far as I'm concerned, if Roddy wants it right back after me (if I get there first), that's cool, too.

Preturn:
- Check out our current trades. We're giving Qin gold for 1 gold/turn. Uh, not any more. We're also trading copper and sugar to Huayna and Toku, respectively, both of whom have an extra 2/turn for trade. So cancel those due to inflation and get them to pay 6/turn, only this time we sell bananas to Huayna and not copper and corn to Toku and not sugar. Food yes, happy no. We're still selling rice to Genghis, but he has no extra, and it's rice, so we keep that deal going.
- We have a lot of city maintenance - the forbidden palace has not yet been built! We need to get on that asap! Tenochtitlan is probably a good site for this, so I squeeze this in before the university it's currently building.
- (Swweeeet, they finally put in the ability to zoom on a city from the F1 screen!)
- Munich is starving and is being stressed culturally, and is building a bank?? Switch to library and maximize food.
- Why is Teotihuacan building West Point??? Cumae is the city where we get extra military production. THAT is the city that should be building West Point. It wastes shields, but I cancel the build and start a bank.
- Domination or conquest? We only have half the land area we need for a domination victory, but our civ trait (organized) makes this easier than if we were another civ. I'm thinking that conquering the Japanese and Mongols as well as settling the remaining island space would get us there. I don't think that we'd have to worry about conflict with Qin or Huayna, since we have good relations with both.
- Goals for this turnset:
+ Ride out and maximize the golden age. Our civics are not a good match for a post-war infrastructure phase, so build units where and when I can, as I don't want to switch until after the golden age.
+ Get ready for conflict with Genghis. He's our next foe, and if he doesn't attack us, we'll attack him.
+ Spread settlers to where I can.

Turn 1 (1605)
- Ferrum ?(forgot) -> bank
- Tlaxcala forge -> settler
- Hamburg courthouse -> barracks (Note that Hamburg also has an academy)
- Berlin forge -> barracks
- Dusseldorf lighthouse -> hindu temple It has a free specialist, but can only create a citizen. A priest would be nice.
- Keep one of the caravels near Dusseldorf *in* Dusseldorf for defense in case Genghis tries to flank, and send one to transport settlers to islands.
- Spread Hinduism in Berlin and Munich

Turn 2 (1610)
- We discover Rifling. Begin steel. Huayna already has economics, so no point in beelining there, and I think we want the cannons.
- Antium market -> bank
- Cologne hindu temple -> rifleman
- Trade philosophy to Qin for Drama and 140 gold. Trade philosophy + 520 gold to Huayna for Divine Right. We're now 3-4 techs up on all except for Huayna, who still has economics over us.

Turn 3 (1615)
- Gemini Montes settler -> rifleman
- Tlatelolco hindu temple -> forge
- Berlin barracks -> library
- Disband unpromoted warrior in Ferrum

Turn 4 (1620)
- Rome hindu temple -> cavalry
- Saxon market -> university
- Essen courthouse -> forge
- Oops, didn't realize caravels couldn't transport settlers. Guess I never tried to do that before. Moved caravel back to front.

Turn 5 (1625)
- Hamburg barracks -> library

Turn 6 (1630)
- Huayna comes for our world map. Not yet.
- Rome cavalry -> rifleman
- Frankfurt ? -> rifleman
- Berlin library -> courthouse
- Great scientist Copernicus born in Rome. He will give 2073 beakers for the discovery of scientific method, so I wait until I *can* discover scientific method and then will use him for that.
- Trade Qin pigs for 6 gold/turn.

Turn 7 (1635)
- We enter the industrial era with the discovery of steel. Begin researching scientific method so can use the scientist.
- Tlaxcala galley -> cannon.
- When this golden age is over, we should probably spend a turn or two just on cash to upgrade our forces.

Turn 8 (1640)
- Discover scientific method. Begin research on constitution, leading to democracy and the statue of liberty.
- Berlin courthouse -> lighthouse

Turn 9 (1645)
- Rome rifleman -> cannon
- Teotihuacan bank -> university
- Cologne rifleman -> cannon
- Berlin lighthouse -> Versailles (this seems as good a place as any)
- Oops, Munich finished its library, squeezing in theatre for more culture
- Turned science down to zero for some much needed upgrades

Turn 10 (1650)
- Tenochtitlan university -> bank
- found Neapolis on s island
- Upgrade about 3 units to riflemen/grenadiers

Notes to next player:
- Galley is heading to s tip of s island to settle within range of fish and oil. This will be a decent "fishing" village and will contribute to possible domination. My preference would be to settle on the very tip of the continent to provide for max fishing. We finished the forbidden palace and are 15 turns away from Versailles, so our mainetenance costs are falling. We're generating cash instead of science for unit upgrades and we're still in unit-producing civics, *and* Cumae is 1 turn from West Point, so I think we're ready for some serious unit churning. I don't think we'll need *many* more techs to allow us to steamroll over the Mongols and Japanese. Tanks would be nice. But we're close to just being ready to go :hammer:.

Preturn:
- Munich is starving and is being stressed culturally, and is building a bank?? Switch to library and maximize food.
- Why is Teotihuacan building West Point??? Cumae is the city where we get extra military production. THAT is the city that should be building West Point. It wastes shields, but I cancel the build and start a bank.

FYI Munich has holy shrine so is bringing in all the money so a bank will up that by 50%.

I didn't think it mattered where Westpoint was built, thought it was good for all our citie, if not, sorry about that. Just drove in will catch back up tomorrow at work, looks like I didn't miss much though :P

I just got back myself. For various reasons, I haven't been able to upgrade to 1.52 yet. Is that going to be a problem? Will try to take alook at the save tonight.
