Happiness is a warm nuke

I like this thread. :nuke::nuke::nuke::nuke::nuke:

I personally prefer to go Chinese and check the Avoid Growth button in all my cities.

But you're right, it's really silly that the game works like this. Definitely needs some nuke and starvation unhappiness.

Its not really increasing happiness, its reducing unhappiness, which makes sense since the unhappy people are dying.

Of course, you're absolutely right. Unleashing nuclear holocaust upon your own citizens should result in a net happiness gain throughout the rest of your country. How could anyone have thought otherwise?

The point is... regardless of the technicalities (reducing unhappiness, not gaining happiness) the net result is the same. People are happier when being vaporized and starved, which can eventually result in an earlier Golden Age of increased revenue and production. I love it!

He prob meant near mid-end/end game where there's "endless 20 population cities" that he puppets. There's no way to decrease pop in them by manually starving. Personally, I just raze these extra puppet cities, or just sell them to another AI. Coz end game, these sciences shouldn't matter. Game should be already won. At that point, razing cities and allocating the happiness in our cities is more efficient (for the multiplier buildings), imo. If Ai wants to resettle the empty space and start with pop 1, let them XD

You know, I was attacking greece in one of my games like 20 minutes ago and was about to let up due to happiness when they nuked some of my puppets and suddenly I had enough happiness to finish them off without worry... LOL

Sure enough a thread on here talking about just that. (granted I didn't nuke myself) Funny mechanics

I just gave this a try for fun. Nuked 3 of my own mid-sized cities (8-10 pop each) that I had puppeted 20 or 30 turns before. Happiness increased by 6. Followed that up with a nuke on another one of my cities of size 11. Happiness increased by another 7. 13 happiness for 2 nukes. Not bad.

I suppose you lose some beakers. I guess that's called "balance".

I soiled my pants laughing.

To be fair, in Civ 4 you could use slavery to whip cities into happiness as no matter how many people you killed, the unhappiness penalty was always the same. You could also use starvation in newly captured cities as well. So this thing already existed in the previous iteration. The difference quite obviously however is that global happiness makes this much, much more noticeable. If they just smoothed out the happy and unhappy curves then it wouldn't make that much of a difference and there' be much less complaint about global unhappiness and all the silliness related to it.

We've already said this, at least I have. The ridiculous part in THIS version is that it can actually trigger an earlier Golden Age. Starvation and Vaporization all the way!

On the topic of happiness, because by the way the whole :nuke: thing is hilarious in my opinion, why can't we have strip clubs (that may or may not have nukes in them) to increases happiness and money?

I dunno - he looks happy enough to me. Nukes FTW!:nuke::cowboy:

(Surprised noone had linked this, although Dr Strangelove was mentioned)

In rl terms, it's bizarre ofc... But then so is a trip from New York to Washington taking 50 years, not needing Robotics for Giant Death Robots, or, ahem... Shooting arrows across the English channel. :mischief: With the atrocious state of the AI in this game, issues like this are more of a luxury to think about imo. Besides - I kind of like it... Gives you more of that crazed dictator feel that's always good to have in empire-building games. "You dare question my authority, you revolting peasant? You will be happy when I say you'll be, or you'll GLOW and be happy! See, nothing is impossible for the Great Leader!":nuke::goodjob:

or you could just use the production you used to build the nukes to build wealth and then buy colosseums, circuses, stadiums, etc

Puppets can't buy those things, but they are great at funding nuclear programs.

Too much maintenance! Why pay each turn to keep my citizens happy when I can just vaporize them instead!

you guys are either incredibly lazy or are just trolling. not only does nuking eliminate valuable productivity (hammers, gold, and beakers) it costs about the same production as other equally effective means. While it may be fun to nuke your own cities, it isn't a viable strategy

Sounds like an unhappy citizen to me...

If it makes the difference between being over or under -10, it actually increases hammers. Now that I think about it, it also increases military strength, since as everyone knows, post-apocalyptic troops are awesome.

So, in summation, nuking your own cities:
1 - increases happiness
2 - increases production
3 - increases military might
4 - causes golden ages to occur faster (which increases gold and hammers even more)
5 - makes your people stay happy longer

It's so nice that nukes only kill unhappy people.
Nukes in real life should do that too.
Just nuke 'm and everything will be nice and fluffy.
And you can probably see in the dark.
