Hellfire causing lag

The problem isn't strictly new, but since 0.30 hellfire graphics cause massive lag on my system making the game pretty much unplayable once it becomes widespread. Turning off particle effects and animations doesn't seem to help, unfortunately. Anyone run into this before and know how to fix it?

Yes, I tend to mod my game so that it features nearly no deserts. Burning sands are a real problem for my old Geforce4. Without them, hell terrain isn't too bad (at least on small maps).

I wouldn't mind seeing the effect alot more subtle as well. My computer handles it pretty well, but my eyes! my eyes!!!

Just a few little flare ups around the map tile would be much better.

Does anyone know how to mod the fire effects out? I'd like to experience the armageddon endgame but don't have the absolute top-end computer it seems to require :(

I'm currently playing a game as the Infernals on the Creation mapscript. When Hyborem came along, it was right next to Varn Gosam's vast desert empire. I conquered him first and now there is a huge untouchable area (for everyone but me of course) of hellfire. Though strategically it's awesome, it's really lagging my game. I attribute the CTD's every so often to it and the time for turn rollover is, well, longer than I would hope for. I think something a little less graphic intensive would be nice. It's cool the way it is, but in the late game it's taxing on my poor machine, and my eyes. :P

Note to self, don't summon the Infernals in worlds with lots of desert.

also, the individual square flames aren't too attractive. i'de reccomend chaning the burning sands into lava, or something else that would represent hellish sand without all that flamboyant (ohh.. pun) fire.
