Help a brother with AIM

I just downloaded AOL Instant Messanger for my computer. I have a question regarding actually sending messages. When I try to send an instant message to one of my friends, it says 'User is unavailable.' Does this mean they aren't online right now, or am I getting the screenname wrong?
