I've been on the GOTM website but I cannot find the actual download.

I wish to join GOTM#31. Any advice would be appreciated... thanks! :)

Welcome :wavey:

Go to the main GOTM website at http://gotm.civfanatics.net . On the left there is a list of links to game pages, including the Current Games feature near the top. Click the link to get to the page describing the game. Make sure you understand and implement the instructions to modify your Civ3 installation to play the game. Then click the link near the bottom of the page to go to the Features page. That includes the links to the six different start files. Choose one according to your expertise and software version, download the .zip file, install the pediaIcons.txt file you will find within it, then load up the start file and play.

Come back here to complain if any of this is gobbledygook ;)

Thanks. I think I'm using Civ3 1.29 and I normally play Emperor level.

Which of the files am I looking at, Conquest or Open? Do I need to make the pediaicon.txt changes? :(

If you are comfortable at Emperor level on random games then you should go Open at least. If you want a faster AI tech and growth pace to compete against and leverage off then go Predator.

Do I need to make the pediaicon.txt changes? :(
Yes. If you are running Civ3 1.29 then I suggest downloading the zipped text file >>here<<, as the file included with the game start file has a non-fatal error that will give you a confusing leaderhead in the F4 screen later in the game.

Ok, thanks

There does not appear to be a Predator for #31 but I never play "accelerated" anyway so probably wouldn't suit me ;)

Now to see if I can rally the Frenchies..

Did not work: Load Error with missing units. Where do I get them?

I tried: Open Save-File for Civ3v1.29 for PC and Mac

I'm using Civ3 1.29f

Nice to see a fellow francophile join the GOTM. How come you are noob with nearly 3000 posts?
GOTM games are not generally as tough as games at the same level on out of the box civ. There have been exceptions such as GOTM14 but usually you get a really sweet starting location.
Before you make a decision on what level you are going to play at I suggest you go through the relevant links on the civ reference thread compiled on this forum by CivSteve. Also pay particular attention to understanding the game mods, this is not straight civ, such as differential naval movement.

I think you'll find there is  OK, Ok, we screwed up, and there was a "GOTM30" copy/paste error on the GOTM 31 details page. It's fixed now, thanks for raising it

The Predator acceleration is all on the AI side. You get to play at the usual pace for an Emeror game, but you can either buckle under the weight of the AI's increased starting units or you can exploit it to gain a technical speed-up and more cities to conquer earlier.

My guess is you didn't spot the sentence in my list of things for you to do:

Those instructions require you to download and install several add-on packs that provide all the units used in the GOTMs to date.

Those intruction were too wordy... me likes it blunt and to the point ;)

I might download the files sometime Saturday morning after freeing up some HD space. Will civfanatics still be up?

I have never competed in a multiplayer Civ competition. Doesn't that make me a newbie? :p

Sorry, we'll have to look for a single-syllable dictionary ;)

Free up space? 2% will be imperceptible!

I *did* post a not-very-wordy statement about the services that will still be available while the forums server is being upgraded. I'm obviously wasting my time here

forums.civfanatics.com will probably be down most of the weekend, so you will not be able to read the pearls of wisdom in these forums or create your own. But

gotm.civfanatics.net, where all the game details, results, submissions and downloads live, will still be up.

www.civfanatics.com, where the main CFC website lives, should also remain available. If anything critical happens you may see announcements on that site, as well as progress updates from Thunderfall about the upgrade process itself. www.civfanatics.com also has a limited bulletin board system in the form of short comments linked to the announcement posts.

Thank you very much, you're very nice people :D

Re: Simplified. Perhaps a list of minimum requirements would have caught my attention. Just a suggestion! :)

Well, I went to check out the files and it took ages find the GOTM#21 add on

I'm sorry for pestering, and it does look like I'm the only one with this problem, but perhaps a universal downloads section would have been more to my expectations. It's another suggestion.

Ofcourse, once I have all these files it won't be an issue and I won't mention it again... but I honestly can't believe I'm the only person to ever have this problem ;)

There *is* a single list of links to all the downloads and addons and spoiler pages for games 17 - 31. It's in the stickied GOTM Reference Thread right here. But if you just downloaded the flles from a single list of links you'd never know that there is a wealth of useful information about the modded units and the other civs and the rest of the game structures on the related game pages. Perhaps you still don't.

Your suggestions are welcome as to how we might make all this more digestible, but it's my view that reconstructing that sizeable volume of data into a single reference document would be a major undertaking. Meanwhile it's all there in a relatively small number of pages, they are all linked from a single menu accessible on every page on the site, and, as you say, you only have to navigate it once to get up and running.

GOTM VET

Its been a LONG break from GOTM for me. Iam pleasently suprised to see GOTM is still going strong.

And it has certainly changed. What with all those patches required now, Several classes, intro and custom rules. (Remembers when there was only the one save game file to download.)

Onto the Questions.
Q. When installing gotm pack21. (Civ3 1.29f)
What the hell do I select ?

"Install plain resource icons"
"Install plain resource icons and power blips"
"Install plain resource icons and power blips and smilies" **
"Restore graphics and text files"

Is it nessary for me to install option 3? Or can I install option1 ????
Or just follow defaults for all the packs?
Dose it "Overright any files?"

Q.Reload rules have they changed ???

What conditions allow you to reload ?
Very rarely in the past when pressing the wrong button resulted in catastophie. Normaly I just suck it up.

(I remember the seriously unstable Savs wayyyyy back.)
(Go into Anarchy every 2 seconds)

Q. Submitting game.

Am I still required to submitt the 3 saves ???
I remember That I had to make a sav game at 100Ad, 1400Ad and final turn sav games.

No mention of this on the Gotm section AFAIK

First question:
Install one of the first three according to taste. The second and third are variants of the resources pictures with little aides that will probably help you to work out what's what. Smilies are attached to lux resources which I find helpful to distinguish the sheep and lambs from the wool; and the power blips, if your eyesight is good enough, will tell you the extra shields, food or gold produced by them. I find the blips of no value, but since I like the smilies I get the blips anyway :hmm: The last option is an "uninstall" for the mod files.

It saves the existing files it replaces, in a folder called "Before Gotm21" or something like that.

Second question:
You must never reload to change an outcome. Reloads are obviously necessary in the event of a crash, or when you need to quit to do something more important (what? ).

Third question:
One save is all you need to submit in the first instance. This MUST now be from the turn AFTER victory or defeat. Details of how to do this are in the recent sticky thread about the new submissions form as well as on that form itself. 1000 BC is also required if you want to eenter the Quick Start Challenge. If there's a query about your game then you may be asked for additional saves. I recommend you keep saves around 1000 BC, 10 BC/AD and 1000 AD in case this is required.

All this stuff is on the gotm site ... somewhere ... :p
