Help a Rome: TW newbie

I think they feature in the EB mod where the RTW reforms are basically split in two in terms of effect. iirc, the Augustan enables the higher end Roman units eg. Urban Cohorts +. I could be totally wrong here though :)

I'm also playing my first game but to be honest it was meant to be just a test game in which I just tried to figure the game out. I think I may have been too slow though as I only control 29 regions with about 190 turns left and it's taking an age to keep raising big enough armies to keep expanding my territories.

Is it necessary to control 50 regions before making a play for Rome itself ?

I may just start over actually as the other Roman factions have become very powerful as I've concentrated on conquering the Gauls, Spanish and the Britons instead. I'm going to have a tough time against the Brutii especially.

It takes a little while to get used to the game, especially if you're new to the TW series, but from your comments you seem to have gotten to grips with it so far.

Before you can attack the Senate you need sufficient popularity with the people which is basically gained via military prowess. If you've got 29 provinces then you're not far off, but if the Brutii & Scipii are powerful too then it will take a little longer in coming. Don't worry; you can't miss it when it does.

That said, even though you don't need 50 territories before you war, it might be a good idea as the more you have to begin with, the shorter the civil war that follows.

It's going to take even longer :( I didn't realise you couldn't attack the Brutii or Scipii until you had
the support of the people - I thought that only applied to Rome itself. I'm having to ship my armies all the way across to Egypt in order to take more territories. I've got a load of spies in the other Roman cities and they've hardly got any defenders in them so I'm itching to take them on.

Does the support from the people have to be at it's fullest before that's possible ?

Yes, it does, but it should jump up when you've got over 30 territories. Have the Germanians been defeated yet? If I were you, I would try to expand your Gallic front into eastern Europe; the settlements there aren't worth much, but they're easy money and if you press down into the Balkans you'll gain another front from which to attack the Brutii.

Germania only have one tiny province left as far as I can tell. Every time I go into their territory the senate gets annoyed and gives me two turns to leave. If I stay there will that initiate a war between me and Rome ? The Brutii have most of Eastern Europe sewn up which is why I'm desperate to attack them. I think I've left it all a bit late now but I'm attacking Egypt instead to gain more territories and increase my support.

It may well do, if they're sufficiently pissed with you. They'll probably ask your leader to commit suicide, reject this ludicrous proposal, et voila: Civil War

Good luck my friend :)

do my strategy: play as egypt, take over anatolia, make 6-7 massive armies, then land at the cities in Greece at the same time. It's great when you see the Brutti suddenly panic armies because their best cities get sieged in one turn (of course, they only had those and their starting cities in that game, but the Julii had all Europe and heading west to russia. They were a pain)

Out of interest, do the Brutii ever actually bother to cross the Propontis? They always seem to concentrate on trampling around Eastern Europe, which always seemed a bit of a waste of time when you have all of the Near East laid out before you...
Or do they do that regularly and I'm just not paying attention?

I've never seen the AI do it; sometimes they make it round the long way, but by then the Scipii have usually crushed Egypt and any neighbours she may have had left and are almost there themselves.

The Scipii always seem to fail in my games and never get anywhere...

Yeah, they always take a while to get going, but in my experience unless I try to beat them to Carthage they grow to dominate N Africa and sweep through Egypt like a breeze...

For me, the Scipii seem to not conquer at all for many beginning turns, but when I (as the Julii) finish conquering Gaul or Spain, they suddenly explode into Africa and Egypt.

Goodness, it feels like it's been a long time since I last played this game. I don't actually have it, so when I get to play I always play skirmish with my friends vs. all sorts of AI armies. Should have posted here then.

I've always wondered if a cavalry army is really as invincible as I believed. Whenever I chose Parthia, I could usually defeat an AI army of thousands with several hundred men with a few hundred casualties vs. the enemy's thousands. I guess it has something to do with AI stupidity and its failure to protect its rear, but with horse archers to pick off stationary troops and distract them, it seems all too easy to flank the enemies with those awesome cataphracts and slaughter them. I tried fighting all sorts of enemy armies, and I think only the Romans and the Germans presented real problems.

Yeah, but to be fair you get as much as your opponent does in skirmish. I actually switched the AI units to better ones if they didn't spend all their money to give them a fair fight.

Lol it's been long since my last post

Well, my progress now is that I've defeated almost everyone towards the northwest. All that is left there now are 1 or 2 Rebel Cities in Britain and 2 Carthage cities. The Brutii is still in the Eastern Europe (though I've captured a few rebel cities there as well) and Scipii is still in North Africa, but for the last few turns, they've just declared war on Egypt. Remaining Factions Other than Romans: Carthage, Rebels, Egypt. While I'm dealing with some Rebels and Carthage, I gues I'll have to transport a lot of armies to the Egyptians now? I'm on like 160 BC, how many turns are left for me?

Also, my economy seemed to go down. Some of my most developed cities, including one near Rome has like -2000. And some are just corrupted. I've already built at least the Great Forum, and some have just "Corruption". How do I counter that to make it back to positive income?

Click on the Senate button and it'll tell you how many turns you have left along with how many territories you control.

I've gotten bogged down in a war with Egypt and taken a few cities with Wonders but they won't accept a ceasefire no matter what. I really want to declare war on my Romans now but I can't afford to with Egypt throwing everything they have at me
