I really got problems vs naval attacks from Ai, they just build naval and overwhelm my cities, how do i defend well againt naval attacks when my city does so little damage to their corvettes. I just cannot build my own naval units fast enough , they just build more corvettes and kill my naval units and obtain sea control. Should melee attack damage to cities from melee sea units be nerfed abit or buff a bit of city attack damage to sea units?

AntiPater, are you sure you're playing VP? The toolbar at the top doesn't look like a VP one to my eyes...

If you dominate land, the sea is not a problem. 3 canons will stop any naval attack on your city(if you have castle there).

Believe me i stop them (just barely), just that they like to build like 10 corvettes and come to my other costal cities slightly further away before i build a decent navy. Basically i just feel that the melee attack damage from melee ships towards city are a bit too high.

first, you might want to check your supply. and solidify your happiness. i know you know that already, but you really should be considering your position before stating something is op.

Any it is not a good choice to defend city that has 3 water tiles to attack. Naval units are well balanced, they are not OP.

Apart from what's been suggested here, I'd like to add.
The best way to deter enemy fleet from raping your coastal cities is... your own fleet.

Unless you'll be investing in a big fleet, I'd recommend being very defensive in settling your coastal cities. Sometimes it pays to settle a tile or two away from the coast just to prevent naval invasions, even if the city will not be as great as it could have been if it were coastal. If you do settle a coastal city, try to settle in such a spot where there's only one coastal tile adjacent to the city, so that only one melee naval unit per turn can attack it. Also, like others have said, have ranged land units behind your city so they can hit naval units. Also always keep one naval melee unit in your city to use it to attack enemy ships just outside the city (and don't leave it outside the city where it can be destroyed, keep it inside the city).

Thanks everyone, actually the two coastal cities, Tumero and Struttgard are enemies', when i capture them , i already tried to build navy asap but Liu Bei just came with 10 melee ships and totally overwhelm my ships and cities. I noticed AI like to settle coastal cities for vox . I just feel that cities damage vs ship is very little, esp when they have those promotions which reduce city attacks.

place a mounted archer in the city while having a archer or cannon at the back of the city (do not place at the coast, beside ocean tile). I always play in Deity and manage to survive any coastal atk easily. Bonus tip: settle you city in a region where there is only 1 or 2 opening ocean tiles beside ur city, so that it will create a chokepoint for enemy's naval unit, then you can easily pick them off one by one.

Are you OP's impersonator :crazyeye: ? I thought the thread was created by @AntiPater

I'll comment on naval in general rather than the game in picture which is a "dead game" (maybe a non eui game or a non vp game something looks odd).

You want to build up a bit of naval strength and upgrade in advance, dromon is one of the few that can be bought without harbour.

A different option is if you have no coastal cities and are about to capture AI cities, you will need sufficient amount of ranged units around the cities.
You want the ranged units to be the same era as AI naval, for dealing with corvettes this would mean you want cannon/musketman/cuirassier.
If you are an era behind you will need a lot more ranged units to take them out, see this link for units by era http://civ-5-cbp.wikia.com/wiki/Units .

A newly captured city will have no walls or castle (always get destroyed on city capture) which leaves it vulnerable and this is probably the biggest culprit.
An option is to trade the city over and over forcing AI to sacrifice melee ships, this will cost you a lot of warweariness but the best is probably to siege the city and try to take out as much naval as possible before the city capture.
