HELP Civ BtS -- slowdowns after 30+ minutes

Hi,

maybe there is some kind of solution for this...

Civ is running fine on small & standard maps until late game. On larger maps (e.g. large, never tried larger than "large") I can only play 1 hour (early game) or 30 minutes (mid-game or late game) because the game slows down (only the interface, IBT and everything else is really fast) Selecting units is laggy, map scroll is fine however. Alt-Tab is fast, Memory usage is aroudn 600 MB. This is independent of the graphic dertails (happens on high and low details all the same, but on high details it happens faster) This situation really bugs me :-(

Maybe there is some kind of setting in the ini-file that I am not aware of? My machine should be more or less capable of running this game, no?

Win XP Professional SP3, 4 GB RAM (800Mhz)

Radeon 3850 500 MB RAM (Catalyst 10.1)

The funny thing is: Right after loading the save, everything is perfect for 10 minutes, then it starts to gradually slow down... After 30+ minutes I usually Alt+F4 and reload. Maybe some kind of memory issue? But with 4GB (3,4 can be used in WinXP) memory should be enough. Pagefile is 2+ GB... so... any help / suggestions would be very much appreciated!

Had to snip some stuff cause of character limit (30000 chars)

I am playing around with mem saver/ mem defragger programs atm. I noticed a slight improvement by simply Alt-Tabbing out of the game... I also disabled the windows pagefile/swapfile after realizing it is no longer needed with >3GB of RAM.

I am interested in a solution/reason of this problem cause I might have to upgrade my hardware... I am just not sure what part of my machine is causing the trouble...

also: I take it BtS is patched to 3.19, correct?

BtS 3.19, I tried that driver, but no change in performance. Also Civ IV is the only game giving me trouble, so I suspect some other, possibly windows/xml related reasons. That´s just a wild guess though. Should my machine be running the game with no problems? The 3850 isn´t that bad, is it?

A thing I noticed is: The animations (of workers) stop after a while. So if the worker is improving a tile and finishes its task, the worker somehow stays stuck in the animation: What I am trying to say is this: During the first minutes the workers have different animations for their different tasks, but after a while they stop changing between "work-animation" and "movement-animation".

Also, selecting and moving units takes forever after 30+ minutes and assigning specialists and switching tiles is super-slow. Opening advisors and zooming into globe-view is fast though, so it is only certain areas that show signs of slow-down...

Maybe someone came across this kind of problem before?

I've had similar problem: 1,5 MB save,after some time total slo-mo. My rig is nothing compared to yours (AXP 2400+,2GB,Radeon x1950Pro 512). Only thing we have in common is amount of vid ram. And here lied source of mine problem. After disabling high detail terrain slowdowns are gone. Apart from usually shuttering you would expect from such old machine . Hope it helps.
