I don't know how many know this, but it may benefit some.

Press 'shift' to speed up play during late game drag. I think I picked this up over at Apolyton.

It cut my 3 minute wait during AI moves in half. :) Also, the AI can still hail you to disolve RoPs and MPPs, damn Romans. Their cities burn as I type.

Does this have any side effects - like the AI stops doing something? I can't quite believe you get something for nothing or whatever causes the speedup would have been built into the game in the first place.

It seems to activate all of those preferences that you'd click to run a big game, no animations for own, enemy or friendly units, etc. I used to use it quite a bit and everything would move faster--a bit like pressing the "+" key in Blizzard games. Hopefully, one of the 'techies' will tell us.

Nowadays, I do what lots of others do betwen turns: make coffee; mark some papers; call a friend. It means I have a life + I can play Civ3.

My understanding is that holding the shift key down only turns off animations at the moment.

You can also turn off animations in the preferences. However, if you turn them off for combat, you won't see how it plays out -- only the result.

Yea, the units "jet" around w/ out animations; however, this preference returns once you let go of the key. The advantage is moving quickly through turns that are lulls in the game. When cambat between AIs and yourself is imminent, let off the key to watch. I've not noticed any loss of in-game options (diplomacy, trade, etc.).

Actually, animations do not turn off when speeding units up through the use of the 'shift' key. I hadn't really paid attention until after my last post here. I just assumed it did. I saw several battles take place that were animated while I had the 'shift' key pressed.
