What is wrong with not making progress? Actually comfortable lifestyles can be found in Amish communities, anything in excess is merely that, mostly arbirtary modern upgrades. Don't get me wrong, I love our modern culture, but Amish culture is just as awesome as we are. The only real need for this progress you speak of is military technology. But if we are so opposed to the Middle East terrorizing us, perhaps less modern technology is a beneficial thing.

Humankind will soon develop the technology to deflect any asteroid or comet that threatens to come too close to the Earth. That allows us to survive. If we were all Amish, this technology would never be developed, and human society would consequently be wiped out in case of an asteroid or comet impact.

Sad as it may seem, those who do not progress are doomed to die.

The Amish live a more sustainable lifestyle. By a non-Amish lifestyle and supposed "more progressive technology", resources are bound to run out someday due to severe overpopulation and resource consumption. Then the human population and all other life will die out as well. Basically it boils down to how you want to die. I wouln't mind the asteroid death all that much.

That's why I think the apocalyptic visions of old Europe dying out are a bit premature.
